I remember when she had just given birth, her family prepared two old hens for her. Her mother-in-law, Li Meihua, would always save the chicken legs and secretly give them to her sister-in-law. She was so angry that she told her husband about it.
As a result, Qiao Dashan said, "The chicken legs at home are for my sister. Why are you, as her sister-in-law, fussing about this? Aren't the rest of the chicken for you to eat?"
In the countryside, sons and grandsons are usually treated like treasures, but it's different in the Qiao family. Qiao Xiaoni is the real darling of this family, and she knew that from the beginning.
Then she thought it was good this way; she had given birth to a daughter, and her mother-in-law would definitely like her when the child grew up. After all, the preference for sons over daughters is quite serious in rural areas, and she felt insecure because her first child was a daughter.
The result was another slap in the face. The family continued to dote on the sister-in-law as always. They liked her daughter, but not as much as they liked the sister-in-law. Later, several things happened that made her feel even more wronged.
"Sister-in-law, quickly give me the basket, it's tiring to carry it like this."
After Qiao Xiaoni finished speaking, she reached out and deliberately touched Tao Chunfang's hand. Tao Chunfang knew everything that was going on in her mind. So this was what her approachable sister-in-law was thinking.
Tao Chunfang, completely unaware of all this, smiled and said, "Mom asked me to come and bring you food, afraid you'd go hungry."
Qiao Manli ran over from a distance, holding a flower: "Mom, I've finally caught up with you. I want to eat eggs, give me eggs."
Tao Chunfang looked at her daughter running towards her from a distance and asked, "Why are you running here, you little rascal?"
Qiao Manli ran over in one breath, almost tripping, but after regaining her balance, she continued speaking.
"I see you have eggs in your basket, I want to eat eggs."
Tao Chunfang dared not let her daughter fight with her sister-in-law for an egg. Not only had her sister-in-law nearly died a few days ago, but her mother-in-law had almost fallen ill. There was only one egg in the basket; she dared not take it out. Besides, her sister-in-law wouldn't back down. She could only gently comfort her daughter, "Xiaoli, be good. Mom will make you something delicious when we get home. Eggs aren't tasty."
Qiao Manli's eyes reddened and she was about to cry when an apple suddenly appeared in front of her. Her eyes darted around, and she forgot about crying, staring intently at the apple.
"Apple, I want to eat an apple."
Qiao Xiaoni squatted down: "Xiaoli can eat an apple, but promise your aunt not to cry."
Qiao Manli nodded blankly, and then a red apple appeared in her little hand. This was the first time her aunt had given her anything to eat, and it felt so unreal. Then, her head was patted, and she came to her senses, opened her mouth wide, and took a bite of the apple. It was sweet and crisp; she hadn't eaten an apple in so long. At that moment, she had completely forgotten about wanting to eat eggs.
Tao Chunfang was completely bewildered by this series of changes. Seeing her daughter eating so heartily, she felt a mix of emotions.
Qiao Xiaoni opened the basket and looked inside. There was a plate of shredded potatoes, a boiled egg, a cornbread, and a large bowl with more than half a bowl of water.
She took out the bowl and drank a sip of water. It was too hot, and she thought she would be back for dinner soon, so she didn't bring any water with her.
Tao Chunfang finally came to her senses: "Xiao Ni, why did you give the apple to the child? And where did you get the apple?"
Could it be from my mother-in-law again? I wasn't as jealous as before, after all, my sister-in-law had given the apple to the child.
