Tang Jiajia was eventually released. Two police officers followed her all the way, even giving her directions, guessing that she had no money in her pocket and giving her some for the bus fare.
Sitting on the bus home, she felt abandoned by the whole world. Just then, she heard:
"If you cause trouble again, what will become of Guo Chenpi? I'll make you cripple like him!"
At first, she was stunned, then broke out in a cold sweat. The speaker was none other than Su Chenhao, the man she had been longing for.
"A ghost!"
She screamed, nearly causing an accident for those around her. Most of the passengers on the evening bus were workers who had just finished their shifts; they were exhausted and already in a bad mood. This sudden scream only worsened their already tense atmosphere, and then the culprit, dressed in tattered clothes, appeared before them.
"How can someone like that get on the bus?"
"Have you bought your ticket yet?"
"So rude, they must be begging on the street."
"How can this girl, so young and already so delinquent, have the nerve to live in this world?"
"That almost made me fall."
The cacophony of voices successfully drew the driver's attention.
The driver stopped at the next stop and glanced back; the little girl they had been looking down on was sitting at the very back.
The scream had startled him, and he almost stepped on the gas pedal instinctively. He was also a little resentful. If this had happened, he'd be out of a job for life.
"Little girl, have you bought your ticket yet?"
"You bought it!" Tang Jiajia sensed the ill intentions of those around her and became extremely nervous, dropping the ticket stub from her hand. When she bent down to pick it up, she couldn't find it.
"My ticket fell on the ground, could you please move aside? I need to find it."
The people around looked around but no one made way for her. Partly because there was nowhere to move, partly because they were still upset about what had just happened, and partly because of the smell emanating from the girl. They looked down on her from the bottom of their hearts.
The driver honked the horn: "Get off if you don't have a ticket! Everyone's in a hurry to get home!"
Tang Jiajia hadn't expected these people to be so indifferent. She couldn't find her ticket stub at all and had to get off the bus after being urged by them. The bus drove away, and she still had 3 kilometers to go to get home.
She had nowhere to go, and it was so cold outside that she dared not wander outside, lest she freeze to death.
Siheyuan (courtyard house).
Li Meihua sat on the sofa, holding an apron in her hand, while Qiao Manli sat beside her: "What happened today really scared me. That little girl told me such a vivid story, it was like it was true."
It startled me at the time, but then it dawned on me. It seems I can't let Manli go out alone anymore; from now on, an adult should accompany her when she goes out.
"Isn't that right?" Tao Chunfang touched her belly to comfort herself. "I was startled when I heard you talking about it just now, and my heart is still pounding."
"Chunfang, don't be afraid, I'm here for you," Qiao Dashan comforted her.
Tao Chunfang nodded. She made a decision in her heart: she would never let her daughter go out alone again. She couldn't neglect her daughter because of the baby in her belly.
Seeing their expressions, Qiao Xiaoni swallowed the words she was about to say. What good would it do to say them? Tang Jiajia's return would only cause them more suffering. If only she had returned to this home in the first placeā¦
She was willing to give up her position and strive for success elsewhere. Now that everything is settled, she wants to come back and reap the rewards? She's not the Virgin Mary; why should she get to do what she wants?
