Chapter Fifty-Four: Lu Jianjun's Public Execution

Soon, Cheng Lin opened the door to the ward and walked in. He quietly placed the lunchbox on the table and said, "I bought some cooked pork liver and duck blood vermicelli soup. Let them eat some when they wake up."

Lu Yang cursed himself for his negligence, patted Lu Yue's head and asked, "Have you had dinner?"

Tears still clung to Lu Yue's face. She murmured, her lips trembling, and asked anxiously, "What if he comes back again in three days?"

A cold glint flashed across Lu Yang's face: "He can't come. Don't worry, your big brother will protect you."

Lu Yue looked up at Lu Yang and felt a sense of unfamiliarity with him for the first time. Her older brother had never had such a cold expression before.

Watching Lu Yue finish a bowl of duck blood vermicelli soup, Lu Yang whispered to Cheng Lin, "I'll trouble you to stay here and keep watch until midnight. I'm going back."

Cheng Lin nodded: "Don't worry, buddy, do whatever you want."

Lu Yang patted him on the shoulder and strode out of the ward.

He didn't drive after he went out; instead, he walked back to the village.

In the village late at night, everyone except those playing cards was already asleep.

Wu Sanlin yawned as he strolled slowly along the village road.

He was thinking about going home later, knowing his wife would scold him for going out to play cards in the middle of the night and never coming home.

Suddenly, a hand covered his mouth and dragged him into the darkness at lightning speed.

Waaah—

Wu Sanlin was terrified. He suspected he had been robbed and was so scared he almost wet himself.

Fortunately, the person behind him spoke up quickly: "Third Brother, I need your help."

Wu Sanlin was taken aback, and the person behind him released his hand from his mouth.

He turned around and saw Lu Yang standing behind him.

"You brat, you almost scared me to death!"

Wu Sanlin was about ten years older than Lu Yang. Relying on his good family background and being the youngest child, he idled away his days doing nothing productive.

Lu Yang smiled and took out a box of Daqianmen cigarettes, stuffing it into Wu Sanlin's hand. Wu Sanlin immediately put on a smiling face.

"You haven't been back for a while, where have you been making your fortune?"

He opened the cigarette pack, lit one for himself, and found that Daqianmen cigarettes were much better to smoke than dry tobacco.

Lu Yang cut to the chase: "Third Brother, I need your help with something this time."

"If you're willing to help, I'll give you 100 yuan, but if you can do this well, I'll give you 200 yuan."

Wu Sanlin stared at Lu Yang with suspicion, and couldn't help but be a little surprised.

Grandma Lu and Lu Jianjun went around telling people that Lu Yang was not learning good things, but Lu Yang gave Yao's father three hundred yuan.

He guessed that Lu Yang was rich, so he asked with a smile, "What kind of help?"

Lu Yang said in a low voice, "You reported that Lu Jianjun took kickbacks and embezzled some of our village's money when he sold dried mushrooms last year!"

Holy crap!

Wu Sanlin's eyes widened instantly, a ferocious look flashing across his face: "Really?"

Lu Yang said with great certainty, "It's true. Not just last year, but every year he handles a deal, he embezzles a portion of it."

"Otherwise, where did the clothes he bought for Lu Yao before he left, his tuition and travel expenses, and Lu Qing's tuition come from?"

Wu Sanlin's eyes turned red; this involved the interests of everyone in the village, including himself.

So Wu Sanlin said, "If this old bastard really does it, I will definitely not let him off!"

Lu Yang sneered and said, "He has many acquaintances in the black market, and many things in the village are handled by them."

“I know one of them, Black Pockmarked, and I’m closest to him.”

Lu Jianzhong grabbed Lu Jianjun and warned him in a low voice, "Are you trying to provoke public anger?"

Lu Jianjun couldn't stand anyone saying anything bad about Lu Yao, and he was about to explode on the spot.

But he quickly realized the situation and silently shut his mouth.

Lu Jianzhong continued to negotiate: "I will keep an eye on him and make sure he pays back the thousand yuan!"

"Go back to work, everyone. I won't let him get away!"

Wu Sanlin looked deep in thought. After Lu Yang finished speaking, he patted Wu Sanlin on the shoulder and left in a hurry.

He didn't leave, but went to Uncle Yu's house, where the lock on the front door had been smashed.

Fortunately, the people here are still honest and kind, and the things in the house are still there.

He lay down on the kang (a heated brick bed) and fell into a deep sleep.

After he woke up, he took out a pack of biscuits from his bag, tore it open, and ate it with cold water.

Lu Yang found a set of Uncle Yu's clothes and hat to change into, and also wore a large scarf.

Although it's warmer now, many people are still bundled up tightly, and he blends in unnoticed in the crowd.

He was certain that Wu Sanlin went to the village branch immediately before taking action.

There was no one in the village branch at that moment, so he picked up the phone and called the police directly.

When the call connected, Lu Yang covered his mouth and nose with a scarf and said, "I am a villager from Lujia Village. I am reporting Lu Jianjun of Lujia Village for embezzling village assets. He has been pocketing the village's collective assets every year when purchasing and selling them, for at least three years."

"The person he often colluded with was Black Pockmarked, a black market figure who had a history of robbery and murder and was extremely greedy..."

"This afternoon, the village will hold a public trial for Lu Jianjun's embezzlement, but the village chief is Lu Jianjun's cousin and will definitely protect Lu Jianjun. If you're not in a hurry, you can blend in with the crowd and listen in."

A middle-aged man's voice came from the other end of the phone, very calm: "We will go to Lujia Village immediately."

Lu Yang hung up the phone, took a deep breath. He couldn't let Li Jianzhong suppress the matter; he had to make Lu Jianjun pay the price.

Even if he, Xingxing, and Yue'er would be unable to take the civil service exam because of this, he still hoped that Lu Jianjun would go in and work on a sewing machine.

He quickly left the village branch and found a secluded place to wait for an hour.

There was a commotion outside; you could tell the whole village was in an uproar.
