Chapter Four: Selling Cold Noodles

Lu's mother rubbed her hands together, revealing a complicated expression, clearly not quite believing it.

"You're talking nonsense. You have to support two children's schooling, and you also have to repeat a year of high school. You'll need money for everything. Where are we going to get so much money?"

Lu Yang just smiled; in his previous life, he had been working until his death.

Having witnessed the leaps of the times, he is confident that he can seize this unprecedented wealth in this lifetime.

"Mom, believe me, your son will definitely make a lot of money!"

Lu Yang's eyes shone brightly as he spoke excitedly.

Lu's mother naturally didn't believe it, and said with a wry smile, "It's enough that you're all doing well. I don't expect you to amount to anything."

The next morning at five o'clock, Lu Yang used the only half bag of flour he had to make cold noodles.

After breakfast, he carried two buckets containing cold noodles and bowls and chopsticks and headed out of the village.

"Big brother, what are you doing?"

Lu Xing caught up with him, tilting his head and asking in confusion.

Lu Yang laughed and said, "How about we set up a stall? You collect the money, and I'll make the cold noodles?"

Lu Xing scratched his head, looking completely bewildered: "Ah... ah... is this okay?"

Lu Yang just smiled. These days, most rural people rely on farming and raising livestock to make a living, focusing only on their small plot of land and ignoring the rapid development outside.

This is an era of rapid development; as long as we seize the opportunities presented by this era, we can soar to great heights.

Four hours later, they rushed to the county's supply and marketing cooperative, bought some seasonings, and then went to the nearby commercial area.

In his previous life, after he "failed the exam," his cousin told Lu Jianjun that he should come and work at a clothing store in the county.

But Lu Jianjun disagreed, because he could earn more money at the brick factory.

Lu Yang quickly found the Lijiaren Clothing Store that his cousin had mentioned.

A woman in her thirties, with curly hair, red lipstick, and a fashionable yet still charming demeanor, was standing in front of the clothing store.

"Comrade, are you still hiring people to sell goods here?"

Lu Yang walked to the door and asked politely.

Chu Xiangyu looked Lu Yang up and down and said coldly, "I prioritize hiring female comrades."

"I asked for my fellow villager. She's nineteen and very pretty."

Chu Xiangyu thought for a moment and said, "I just hired one yesterday, so we don't need her for now. I'm opening a branch in half a month, so you can have her come and give it a try."

Lu Yang quickly thanked him, and then led Lu Xing toward the meat processing plant.

They set up their stall at the entrance of the meat processing plant and began preparing the sauce.

Limited by the current conditions, he only used vinegar, a small amount of white sugar, chili powder, and salt—these basic seasonings.

There were also several stalls selling steamed buns and wontons nearby, all waiting for the factory workers to get off work.

These days, workers have secure jobs with high wages and good benefits.

As soon as the factory closed, Lu Yang immediately shouted, "Liangpi (cold skin noodles), four cents a bowl, or your money back!"

Lu Xing stared in disbelief, standing awkwardly to the side, unsure of what to do with his hands.

Soon a child came over and begged his mother to buy it for him.

Lu Yang served the child a bowl, deliberately adding less chili, and said with a smile, "Try it, if you don't like it, you don't have to pay."

The child immediately snatched it, took a bite, and smacked his lips, saying, "It's slippery, Mom, you should try some too!"

The child's mother took a bite and her eyes lit up: "Give me a bowl too, with extra chili!"

"Okay."

Lu Yang smiled and served the woman a bowl, this time adding extra chili peppers.

He used to work in a noodle shop in his previous life and knew how to mix a lot of seasonings. If he had the capital, he would have opened his own noodle shop right away.

"It actually...sold out!"

Lu Xing, who was watching from the side, was dumbfounded. He used to think that making money was very difficult, but it seemed that his brother's money-making was not difficult at all.

Summer is hot, which is the perfect time to eat cold noodles. In less than two hours, a large bucket of cold noodles was sold out.

On their way back, they went to the black market to buy noodles, which were more expensive than buying them at the supply and marketing cooperative without ration coupons.

But Lu Xing was still very excited, clutching the money and saying excitedly, "Brother, I made sixteen yuan!"

"We'll come back to sell cold noodles tomorrow!"

Lu Yang was in a good mood. There were no stalls assigned to him for the time being, and no one was complaining about hygiene issues, so he could continue doing business for the time being.

At 7 p.m., Lu Xing and Lu Yang finished their work at the gatehouse. Lu's mother and Lu Yue hadn't eaten yet and were swatting mosquitoes while waiting for them to return.

As soon as Lu Xing entered the door, he jumped up excitedly and shouted, "Mom, Xiaoyue, we made sixteen yuan selling cold noodles today!"

"We're going again tomorrow! We're sure we can earn back our tuition!"

"Big brother spent four yuan on something for Sister Lili, but Sister Lili is so beautiful, it would be worth it if big brother could marry her!"

Lu's mother laughed and patted his head, saying, "Keep your voice down, you're all hoarse from shouting, really?"

Lu Xing grinned and stuffed all twelve yuan into his mother's hand. His mother was immediately shocked: "So much money! That's almost half a month's salary for a worker in the county!"

Lu's mother counted the money repeatedly, unable to get enough of it; she had never seen so much money before.

Lu Yang raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised.

When the villagers talked about Lu Xing and Lu Yue, they all said they were like gourds with their mouths sawed off, each more silent than the other.

Lu Xing had never been so carefree, and even Lu Yue kept smiling with her lips pursed.

He placed the noodles on the wooden shelf and said, "Let's eat first."

Lu's mother clapped her hands and said, "We don't even have a heated room when we move, I'll go make some scallion pancakes!"

Lu Xing immediately swallowed, and Lu Yue also stared longingly at Lu's mother, which made Lu Yang swallow back his words of refusal.

The conditions were still too poor; there wasn't much to eat, and even eating a scallion pancake felt like celebrating the New Year.

Mother Lu added a spoonful of lard, flipped the pancake in the pan, and the aroma immediately filled the entire small house.

After the golden scallion pancakes were cooked, the four of them gathered around the stove, spread some soybean paste on the pancakes, and ate them directly.

Lu Xing ate one card in a few bites and then grabbed a second one.

"No one's going to take it from you. If you like it, Mom will make you another one tomorrow. Don't choke!"

Lu's mother quickly poured him a bowl of water and said with a smile.

Lu Xing grabbed the second pancake, took a bite, and said indignantly, "Grandma thought it was too much oil and wouldn't let me make them, but you actually made them, and they ate the most!"

"The last time I ate scallion pancakes was on the second day of the Lunar New Year last year. I only ate half of one before Dad scolded me for being a glutton! Lu Yao ate two, and Dad kept urging him to eat another one!"

As he spoke, he seemed to remember something and turned to look at Lu Yang: "It seems that Big Brother didn't get a single bite."

Lu Yang scoffed, "You only got half a piece, while Mom, Yue'er, and I didn't get a single bite. Isn't it the same every year?"

Lu Xing wrinkled his nose and took a big bite of the scallion pancake, as if he were going to do something drastic.

Lu Yue looked like she was reluctant to eat it, taking small bites with her eyes sparkling.

Lu Yang comforted him, "From now on, we can buy whatever we want to eat, and no one will compete with us for it anymore."

While the four of them were in harmony, the Lu family was shrouded in gloom.

Grandma Lu, supporting her back and leaning against the door frame, slammed the pig feed bucket to the ground.

"Guan Xiuqin, stop pretending to be dead! Why isn't the food ready yet? Are you trying to starve me to death?!"

Grandma Lu's sharp, angry roar reached the kitchen.
