When it was time for lunch, Grandma Lu went to the window, opened it, and called down, "Young man, do you deliver food here? My second daughter-in-law, Guan Xiuqin, is an inspector at the fertilizer factory. She's at work now. She'll settle the bill for you when she gets back."
The restaurant owners in the neighborhood all have some connections and know the residents well, so they know that what Old Mrs. Lu said is not a lie.
The young man immediately waved his hand and said, "Okay, what would you like to eat?"
Grandma Lu smiled and ordered two meat dishes. After waiting for half an hour, the young man delivered the food to her door.
"Young man, you're such a good person. My old arms and legs are too tired to go up and down the stairs, otherwise I would have gone down by myself. Here, take this cigarette."
Grandma Lu accepted the meal with a smile and handed a packet of Golden Leaf tea leaves to the young man.
The young man smiled, accepted the cigarette, and left. Old Mrs. Lu closed the door, placed the iron bed across the doorway, sat on the sofa, and ate while watching TV.
Guan Xiuqin was furious, but she really didn't want to go out and face Old Madam Lu, so she simply stayed in the master bedroom.
While they were at an impasse, Lu Yang had already returned to the provincial capital, and he thought of something.
On September 22, 1985, the finance ministers of the five major Western industrialized countries decided to jointly intervene in the foreign exchange market to lower the exchange rate of the US dollar.
The yen appreciated sharply against the dollar, rising from 240 yen to 1 dollar to 121.05 yen by the end of 1987, an increase of nearly 100%.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, but he was also uncertain about his chances.
He has never traded stocks in either his past or present life.
Seeing that he was preoccupied, Cheng Lin poured Lu Yang a glass of wine: "What's bothering you? Talk to your buddy."
Lu Yang sighed and said, "It's too hard to make money, and we earn too little."
Cheng Lin paused, his hand holding the wine glass still, completely bewildered.
He was getting frustrated and said speechlessly, "What do you mean?"
Lu Yang looked up at him and said, "I want to mortgage all the two storefronts I have and the house in the provincial capital to try my luck in the stock market."
Cheng Lin was utterly astonished and nearly lost control of his emotions: "Stock trading is no different from gambling. You can become rich overnight or be heavily in debt overnight. Why do you want to get involved in that mess? Can't we just make money peacefully?"
Lu Yang gave a wry smile: "Dude, we're too poor, we're not earning enough, I mean it."
"I want to take a gamble. If this bet pays off, we can at least save ourselves three years of hard work."
Cheng Lin touched his nose, still somewhat disagreeing.
Lu Yang patted him on the shoulder and said, "If I lose everything this time, you won't need to work for me anymore. Just tell Sister Chu, and she'll definitely let you continue using this truck."
Cheng Lin thought Lu Yang had gone mad, but judging from Lu Yang's appearance, it was no longer reasonable to reason with him.
Besides the house in the county town, Lu Yang mortgaged everything he could, totaling 350,000 yuan. Adding that to what he already had on hand, he could raise a total of 520,000 yuan.
When he finished getting his visa and was about to leave, he found that Cheng Lin was already waiting for him.
"I'll go too. I've thought about it, and I still think that if I bet on this, I might make a lot of money!"
Lu Yang couldn't help but laugh and pat him on the shoulder. The two of them prepared all the formalities and flew to Xiao Rizi together.
On his way to Xiao Rizi, he had the feeling of traveling south for the first time.
Upon arriving at Xiao Rizi, they immediately checked into a high-end hotel and asked the hotel to help them find a translator.
He had been back in his room for less than ten minutes when someone knocked on the door.
Lu Yang opened the door, and outside stood the hotel manager and a middle-aged man.
The supervisor bowed politely and said in English, "This is the translator, Mr. Watanabe."
Lu Yang raised an eyebrow, thanked him politely, and let Watanabe in.
Only Watanabe, himself, and Cheng Lin remained in the room. Lu Yang said directly, "I'm here to trade stocks. I hope you'll cooperate with me."
Watanabe smiled and said in somewhat broken Chinese, "You're also here to make a quick buck while the dollar is down."
Lu Yang was somewhat surprised: "Your Chinese is actually quite good."
Watanabe calmly said, "My mother was Chinese. After she passed away, I returned to Japan to live with my father, but he remarried. Fortunately, I could earn a lot of money as a translator."
Lu Yang nodded, and they chatted briefly.
The next morning, Lu Yang and Cheng Lin first exchanged RMB for Japanese Yen, and then had Watanabe drive him to the stock exchange center.
After Lu Yang went inside, he carefully examined the stocks and invested all 520,000 yuan in the technology and automotive industries, stocks with promising future prospects, using a 20x leverage.
Cheng Lin did exactly what he said, and after selling the stocks, they went straight back to the hotel.
Cheng Lin kept a close eye on the stock market every day, like an ant on a hot pan, while Lu Yang focused on doing his homework.
"Brother Lu, I admire you the most. I even dream about stocks, and you've invested so much money, yet you study like nothing happened!"
Lu Yang looked up and said, "I also pay attention to the stock market every day, but I don't watch it as much as you do. We'll be here for two months, and after we go back, the college entrance exam will be in half a month."
“I have already paid someone from Chen’s Restaurant to register my student status at the No. 6 Middle School in the county.”
Cheng Lin was dumbfounded, even temporarily forgetting his anxiety: "You're really amazing. I've never met anyone more awesome than you."
Lu Yang rubbed his temples and continued working on his problems.
After waiting for half a month, Lu Yang saw that the price increase was about to reach its limit, so he immediately contacted Watanabe to go to the stock market.
He sold all six stocks he had bought, and when Cheng Lin saw that he had sold them, he immediately followed suit.
Watanabe was taken aback by what he saw, and on the way back he couldn't help but ask, "Aren't you going to throw it?"
