Chapter Fifteen: More Vicious Than a Rich Man

After watering the mushrooms and soybeans, Lu Yang went back inside to rest.

In the dead of night, a thin figure quietly approached the Lu family's house. She struggled to climb over the Lu family's wall.

Lu Jianjun had been selling salt all day and was so tired he was like a lump of mud. He lay on the kang (a heated brick bed) and snored loudly.

Grandma Lu had been working in the fields all day and was fast asleep; no one noticed that Li Xiulian had slipped in.

Li Xiulian made a scene for several days, but still didn't get a single penny.

Since it was indeed Cheng Yaozu who started the fight, and Lu Yao was also seriously injured, after hitting a wall one after another, she realized that she wouldn't get a single penny by throwing a tantrum.

Therefore, Li Xiulian decided to take the risk and steal it herself.

She first went to Lu Jianjun's house and began searching by the moonlight.

Previously, Lu Jianjun would hide his money in a secluded place in the storeroom, but after his mother passed away, he felt there was no need to hide it, so he casually put the money he had just earned in a wooden box on the kang (a heated brick bed).

Li Xiulian rummaged around for a while and quickly found two hundred yuan in the wooden box.

She quickly put the money in her pocket, searched around again, and when she couldn't find any more, she tiptoed toward Old Mrs. Lu's house.

The next morning, Old Yu and Aunt Yu both walked out with dark circles under their eyes, carrying large and small bags.

"Yangzi, here's the key to this courtyard. We're going to stay with my daughter for a while. Please help us look after the place."

Old Yu's voice was hoarse, and he spoke with a gloomy face.

Lu Yang took the keys and said, "We set up a stall at the entrance of the meat processing plant every day. If you need anything, just go there to find us."

Old Yu responded, picked up his bags, and left with Aunt Yu.

Lu's mother asked blankly, "What happened?"

Lu Xing was about to speak when Lu Yang slapped him on the head, and he immediately fell silent.

"We're going to set up a stall."

Lu Yang urged him on, and Lu Xing immediately ran to push the cart.

Lu's mother looked at Lu Yang and Lu Xing suspiciously, but didn't ask any further questions.

"Why don't you tell Mom about this?"

Lu Xing pushed the cart, his face full of confusion.

Lu Yang didn't want his mother to know about this, because she had also been betrayed by Lu Jianjun, though she was unaware of it.

Around 11 a.m., Yu Guangxue was cooking at home.

Her house was small and cramped, and the air in the kitchen was stuffy and hot in the sweltering summer, making Yu Guangxue feel a little dizzy.

Cold sweat soaked through her shirt, but she didn't care and continued adding firewood to the stove.

Tang Jincheng rarely eats lunch at home; he said he wanted to drink chicken soup before he left in the morning.

Yu Guangxue, understanding her husband's hard work, started stewing chicken soup in the morning.

The chicken soup needs to simmer for three hours to develop its flavor, and she has been simmering it for two and a half hours, sitting by the stove the whole time.

Thump thump thump—

She was staring blankly at the pot when she suddenly heard a knock on the door.

"Didn't you bring your keys?"

Yu Guangxue, supporting her belly, slowly got up and walked towards the door.

When she opened the door, she was taken aback to find Old Yu and Aunt Yu standing outside.

"Dad, Mom, what brings you here?"

Yu Guangxue stepped aside to let them in, and asked in confusion.

Aunt Yu grabbed her hand and asked with some concern, "Why are you sweating so much?"

"I'm making chicken soup and it's warming up by the stove. It's so hot outside, come in and have some chicken soup."

Yu Guangxue hurriedly called them in, her face full of urgency.

Old Yu and Aunt Yu carried large and small bags into the house. Aunt Yu rolled up her sleeves and said, "Go and keep an eye on things in the kitchen. You should go lie down for a while."

Yu Guangxue, supporting her pregnant belly, walked into the main room, poured a glass of water for Old Yu, and handed it to him.

Old Yu took the water, drank a big gulp, and looked somewhat tired.

"These are for you."

Old Yu pointed to several of the bundles and said.

Yu Guangxue said reproachfully, "You guys are reluctant to eat anything, yet you brought me so much stuff. Take this back to nourish yourselves."

Old Yu poured himself another glass of water and said, "We didn't plan to go back this time."

Yu Guangxue stared at Old Yu in astonishment, then a hint of panic flashed in her eyes.

She said with some difficulty, "But... the house is only so big, there's not enough room for everyone."

Old Yu calmly put down his teacup and said, "You're so far along in your pregnancy, and Tang Jincheng can't take time off to take care of you, so your mother and I discussed it and decided to come and take care of you."

"Don't take this lightly. You've been married for so many years before having a child, you can't be too careful!"

When the topic of children came up, Yu Guangxue swallowed back all her words of refusal.

She nodded and sat down next to Old Man Yu.

Less than ten minutes later, the sound of a bicycle bell came from outside. Soon the door was pushed open, and Tang Jincheng walked in carrying a bag.

"Jincheng, you're back! The chicken soup will be ready soon, eat plenty later!"

Yu Guangxue quickly stood up and said gently.

Tang Jincheng gave a perfunctory reply, but when he turned around and saw Old Yu, his face immediately darkened.

What brings you here?

Tang Jincheng asked in a cold tone.

Old Yu's tone wasn't much better: "We'll come to take care of Xiaoxue, and then we'll go back after she finishes her postpartum confinement."

Tang Jincheng's face immediately turned as black as the bottom of a pot. He threw his bag on the table by the door with a "thud".

"I don't have room at home, so you all need to find a guesthouse to stay in. Leave now!"

Tang Jincheng rudely chased them away.

Yu Guangxue stood there awkwardly, feeling utterly ashamed.

Old Yu stared at him with a half-smile and said, "Xiaoxue lives with her mother, we'll live in the small house, there'll be enough room."

"I'll give you two choices: we stay here, or we take Xiaoxue back to the village to live. You choose one!"
