Chapter 165 Entering the City

S City is at a high altitude and has not suffered from flooding during heavy rains. A reinforced concrete wall about ten meters high was built around its outermost perimeter, and the wall was covered with a thick layer of ice, which seemed to have been put there by humans.

Every meter along the wall stood a heavily armed soldier, who was now vigilantly scrutinizing each arriving survivor to assess whether they posed a danger.

Two large doors, each three meters long and wide, were opened in the wall. One was the exit, and the other was the entrance. Next to the entrance, there was a long row of tents, and soldiers standing straight were constantly patrolling.

Nanxing and his companions had never seen such a high city wall before, and they stared at it intently until the patrolling soldiers knocked on the car window, bringing them back to their senses.

"Hello," the patrolling soldier handed Banxia a sheet of A4 paper, "Please drive over there to register—"

He pointed to the long queue that stretched for over a kilometer to his right, saying, "The rest of the precautions are written on the paper. If you have any questions, come find us."

"Okay," Banxia said, taking the printed paper and glancing at it casually. "Thank you!"

Nanxing drove to the back of the long queue, and Banxia quickly scanned the entire line before handing it to Su Yao behind her.

The paper contained detailed information, such as whether supplies needed to be handed over upon entering the city, where to queue for registration and inspection, how long the quarantine period was, how to find work after entering the city, how to accept assignments, etc. It can be said that anyone who can read can basically understand the process.

“Looks pretty good,” Su Yao handed the printed paper back to Banxia. “I’ll go down and check it out to see if it’s as described on the paper.”

Cai Yuan unbuckled his seatbelt: "I'm going too."

"Be careful," Banxia said, her mood not very good. "If anyone causes trouble, call us."

This city held too much pain for her; just getting close to it made her feel a dull ache in her heart.

She turned her head to look at Nanxing, only to meet his worried eyes. She was slightly taken aback, then leaned in and kissed him.

Considering there were other people in the car, Nanxing didn't say anything. He pursed his lips, reached out and pinched Banxia's cheek, then held her hand tightly.

Nestled in Banxia's arms, Yinzi looked at her sister, then at her brother, and then reached out her paw to rest on their clasped hands.

Those bright green eyes clearly said: Even kittens want to hold hands!

The somber atmosphere was instantly broken. Nanxing couldn't help but smile, scratching Yinzi's chin and praising, "Good girl."

About twenty minutes later, Su Yao and Cai Yuan returned: "There are so many people, it looks like we'll have to wait in line for hours. Do you want to go down and take a walk?"

Fang Yunyun asked, "Don't rush, tell me what you've found out first."

Cai Yuandao said: "It's basically exactly the same as what's written on the paper. You don't need to hand over any supplies to enter the city, and the government will provide ordinary people with three days of free housing and food. After three days, you'll need to use points for everything from food and clothing to housing and transportation. Points can be exchanged for crystal cores and supplies."

This policy is very humane, not only providing a buffer period for newcomers to the city to find jobs, but also playing a significant role in ensuring the stability of the base.

Su Yao added, "Before officially entering the city, we need to be quarantined at the quarantine point for 24 hours to prevent anyone from being infected with the zombie virus but hiding it, except for those with superpowers."

Fang Yunyun nodded: "Anything else?"

Su Yao hesitated for a moment and said, "The government is recruiting a large number of people with superpowers and mutated animals. It is said that the rewards are very generous. Not only is accommodation provided free of charge, but food and clothing are also discounted by 50%."

If he didn't know that the recruited superhumans would go wherever danger lay, he would have been tempted, since the food in the space wasn't enough to feed his family of three until they grew old.

Seeing Fang Yunyun and Su Xiao looking thoughtful, he quickly changed the subject: "I estimate this line will take several hours. Do you want to get off the bus and walk around to get some fresh air?"

Nanxing was the first to unbuckle her seatbelt: "Yes, Banxia and I want to go for a drive."

Fang Yunyun, Su Xiao, and Zhao Xuan were also getting restless: "Then you go first, and come back in half an hour to take our turn."

Banxia released Jinzi and Taozi from her spatial dimension: "Just let Jinzi and Taozi watch the car."

Yinzi, Daju, and Lihua didn't want to be stared at, so they volunteered to look at the car with Jinzi and Taozi.

“Wife,” Nanxing said, taking Banxia’s hand, “come with me.”

Banxia asked in confusion, "Hmm?"

Nanxing didn't say anything, but pulled her towards the back of the hillside.

The soil on the hillside was frozen solid, with a thin layer of ice on the surface. Fortunately, the soles of my shoes were non-slip, so I didn't slip or fall.

Once no one was around, Nanxing hugged Banxia tightly: "Hug me, don't be sad, I will always be with you."

Banxia was stunned for a moment, then threw herself into his arms.

As expected, they waited in line for more than five hours before it was their turn.

Staff members used a loudspeaker to announce: "Men, please go to the left tent; women, please go to the right tent; children aged three and under should stay with their mothers. Please remove your hats, masks, and glasses before entering to ensure your face is visible."

Upon hearing this, Banxia and the others took off their winter masks, exposing their fair and rosy cheeks to the air, which drew a few more glances from the staff.

They had established bases in almost every major city in the country. People who could live in their local area would never travel thousands of miles to a strange city to survive. This was the first time they had ever seen such a... healthy survivor.

The person in charge of registration pressed the loudspeaker next to him without looking up, and a pre-recorded female voice immediately rang out: "Hello, please state your name, ID number, whether you have any special abilities, the type of your ability, and its level."

Banxia glanced at it casually and said the prepared words: "Banxia has dual abilities of wood and space, both at level three."
