146. Cuckoos occupying magpie nests
The semester's courses ended a long time ago, and we've entered the final review stage. Every day is filled with mountains of questions and tests. There are no more tests or exams than problems. Even physical education classes have been canceled.
Li Wei had just finished a worksheet that would be covered in the next class, stretched, and then the bell rang to signal the end of get out of class.
A chorus of groans erupted from the classroom. Most of the students hadn't finished their work, and it seemed there was no hope of going out for some exercise after class. Even going to the toilet would be a mad dash, like delivering takeout.
Li Wei glanced at her deskmate, Lin Xiao, who was still diligently writing. Li Wei had done so many practice problems; regardless of how much her grades had improved, at least her speed had increased. Having seen many different question types, she had become quite proficient, and her test-taking speed was among the best in the class.
Li Wei sometimes jokingly thinks of the oil seller, saying, "There's nothing special about it, just practice makes perfect!"
Just as I was about to go out into the corridor for a stroll, Zhou Xiaoyan came running over. She entered the classroom and dragged Li Wei out to find a quiet corner where there were few people, and they started chattering away.
"Hey, Li Wei, Song Xuejiao from my class spent ages asking me about you during morning self-study today. She said she ran into you at Luo Jianhua's house for dinner yesterday. What's going on? Why is she suddenly so interested in you?" Something must have happened, otherwise why would Song Xuejiao, that lazy person, be so proactive?
Li Wei cautiously glanced at Zhou Xiaoyan: "Did she say anything?" This girl has a keen sense of smell; she has the potential to be an entertainment reporter.
Zhou Xiaoyan rolled her eyes and said, "You've told me everything, but what exactly happened? I want to hear it from you yourself."
Li Wei could tell from the way she rolled her eyes that this guy had no good intentions. So she said, "Nothing happened. It's just that Song Xuejiao probably found it strange. My family is quite close to the Luo family, and her family seems to have a good relationship with Uncle Luo San as well. We just happened to run into each other, but we didn't have a chance to talk much. I guess she was just curious."
Zhou Xiaoyan was a little skeptical: "Really? She only inquired about you, not Li Lin and the others. Is it that simple? I know Song Xuejiao really likes Luo Jianhua. It seems like you and Luo Jianhua have a rather ambiguous relationship, right?"
Li Wei slapped Zhou Xiaoyan: "What nonsense are you talking about? What do you mean by 'ambiguous'? We're childhood friends, you know? Don't talk nonsense. If the teacher calls your parents, I'll be convinced you're spreading rumors! By the way, why isn't that Song Xuejiao studying properly? Why is she always thinking about this? How can she concentrate on her studies?"
Zhou Xiaoyan realized she couldn't get anything out of Li Wei. This girl was tight-lipped. When asked about Song Xuejiao, she smiled and said, "You think everyone's like us, studying themselves to death every day? Song Xuejiao lives a life of luxury. You don't know, do you? Her family is rich. She's not a very good student, but her dad used money and connections to get her in. She only needs to graduate. She doesn't have to work herself to the bone to get into university."
Li Wei was slightly surprised: "Huh? Then why not go to a regular high school? Isn't it uncomfortable to always be at the bottom of the exams here?"
Zhou Xiaoyan pouted: "You just don't understand. She said her dad just wanted her to get into a good high school. Having talented classmates is a resource in the future. Besides, marrying a bright girl is an achievement too. Tsk tsk. Even my dad says her dad is very farsighted!"
Li Wei opened her mouth but couldn't say anything. Wasn't this treating No. 1 High School like a bride's school?!
Li Wei and Zhou Xiaoyan exchanged glances. They both shrugged and grinned simultaneously.
Li Wei returned to the classroom as the school bell rang, still thinking. Song Xuejiao should have gone directly to Luo Da's class; that class had many talented students, and she'd have a good advantage being close to him. Her father really had a brilliant plan. She wondered if Song Xuejiao would live up to his expectations.
However, given Song Xuejiao's figure and looks, finding a young, attractive man in high school should be easy. After all, these kids haven't seen much of the world yet, so it all depends on her own abilities.
Thinking of Song Xuejiao, Li Wei then thought of herself. That was the real life of a freeloader. Should she learn from her? After all, she had some money; being a self-reliant freeloader was more honorable than Song Xuejiao's.
But then I thought, maybe I shouldn't. I'm fine as I am now. I've put in the effort and reaped the rewards, which is what I wanted. I'm happy enough. If a person is too ungrateful, they'll be struck by lightning.
At lunchtime, Zhou Xiaoyan and Ding Anni, who was working on her exam papers at Li Wei's house, joined the group, along with Luo Da, a regular customer, and the whole table was filled with people.
Fortunately, Aunt Gao has seen a lot in life now. Without batting an eye, she took out steamed buns and rolls from the refrigerator, heated them in the steamer, and quickly stir-fried two dishes. They were on the table in no time, without wasting any time at all.
Ding Anni quickly finished her meal and went to Li Lin's room to work on her practice sheets, while Zhou Xiaoyan, like a radar, collected signals between Li Wei and Luo Da, feeling that something must have happened between them—
Li Wei was extremely annoyed, thinking to herself, "You eat my food and drink my water, and you're still thinking about my scandals? That's so unfair!"
Li Wei tapped the table in front of Luo Da: "Eat quickly, I have something to discuss with you after you finish eating."
Luo Da looked up at Li Wei, then lowered his head and continued eating. Although he ate more than others, he didn't eat slowly. He wondered what had gotten into Li Xiaoming that made him bring it up. Was he still angry about yesterday? Actually, nothing had happened. He hadn't done anything!
Zhou Xiaoyan's eyes lit up with excitement. Haha, finally something's happened! She thought that once they were in high school, the two of them would calm down!
Before Luo Da could finish eating, Zhou Xiaoyan quickly shoveled her food into her mouth and ate it all. Before she could even swallow it, she rushed to Li Lin's room to exchange information with Ding Anni.
As a result, Ding Anni's test paper was a waste of time. She didn't write a single word all afternoon, instead spending it gossiping with Zhou Xiaoyan in Li Lin's room about Li Wei's scandalous affairs. It wasn't until Li Wei called them to school that she let out a shriek and gave Zhou Xiaoyan a good scolding.
After finishing his lunch, Luo Da asked Li Wei, who was eating fruit, "Is there anything you want to discuss?"
Li Wei glanced at him and said, "It's nothing. I just wanted to provoke Zhou Xiaoyan so she wouldn't feel so stifled."
Luo Da hesitated for a moment: "Then I have something to discuss with you. Your sofa is too small, and it's not very comfortable for me to sleep on at noon. Could I borrow your bed to sleep on?"
Seeing Li Wei staring at him with furrowed brows, he quickly added, "Just this afternoon. I didn't sleep well yesterday because of something, and I'm so tired now. Ah, just for one day. Just today!"
Li Wei remained unmoved: "Did you think I slept in your bed for a little while and then wanted to find my balance? I didn't do it on purpose. Who knows how you were shaking me? Otherwise, how could I have fallen asleep so easily?" Kid, you're not thinking of doing anything funny, are you? Dream on!
Luo Da quickly clarified, "No, how could that be? You're just lying there too comfortably. My bed is famously comfortable in my house. Even my mistress always wants to sleep there, but I won't let her. See how good I am to you?"
Why does this sound so familiar? It seems like one of her lines from before. Every time she says this, it's like she's asking for something.
Li Wei's attitude was firm: "No, you can sleep in Xiao Hui's room. Anyway, his bed is big enough, and he usually doesn't sleep there; he either reads or plays games."
Luo Da frowned: "No, his room smells like sweaty feet."
This is like a crow landing on a pig: "Don't you have sweaty feet? You sweat way more than Xiaohui every day, and you still have the nerve to complain about others!" Don't think you're cleaner than others, even though your own room doesn't smell of sweaty feet.
Luo Da hurriedly said, "I didn't look down on him, it's not like that. Two sweaty feet together, how can that be good? Just think about the smell..."
Li Wei quickly stopped her: "Alright, alright. Can't you see I'm eating? You're just trying to disgust me. Stop talking. After hearing what you said, I'm even less likely to let a sweaty foot into my room. Forget it, either the sofa or the sweaty smell, you choose. This is much better than the legendary dungeon."
Luo Da made a last-ditch effort, looking rather pitiful, and stretched out his arm: "I don't smell bad, smell me. I shower and change clothes every day, I'm absolutely clean, you can check if you don't believe me..."
Li Wei —
Li Wei pushed away Luo Da who was leaning in: "Okay, okay, don't get so close, hey... and don't grab my hand, it's sticky and uncomfortable after eating. Alright, just for this afternoon, don't do this again."
Luo Da suppressed a laugh and nodded seriously, "Okay, I'm going to sleep." He had to strike while the iron was hot, otherwise all his efforts would be in vain once Li Xiaoming recovered. With that thought, he turned and went to Li Wei's boudoir without even looking back.
Li Wei was stunned by Luo Da's nimble movements. Had she made a fool of herself again? It's alright, it's just this once, there won't be any more talk about it tomorrow. She wanted to rest, how could she allow a brat to sleep soundly next to her bed!
Luo Da, on the other hand, slept soundly and happily on the fragrant bed. Li Wei simply gave him the bedroom and leaned against the sofa to read a history book like a novel. Anyway, she didn't sleep every day at noon; sometimes she would just doze off for a while. She went to bed early at night and didn't have much sleep to spare.
This sofa might be a bit small for someone of Luo Da's size, but it's just right for Li Wei, with a little room to spare. Although it's not as good as a bed, it's still pretty good.
Ding Anni and Zhou Xiaoyan were chatting and got thirsty, so they went out to find some fruit. When they saw Li Wei leaning on the sofa, eating sunflower seeds and reading a book, they asked in surprise, "Why don't you go back to your room? Is the sofa comfortable?"
Li Wei looked up at her and said, "Well, you don't need to rack your brains. My place has been taken over. Do you think it's comfortable or not? But the sofa is actually not bad. Do you want to come and try it out? Zhou Xiaoyan is also coming. I can switch with you guys."
Ding Anni said with a look of sudden realization (it's unclear what she suddenly realized), "No need, no need, I'm fine in Li Lin's room, you can take your time experiencing it... But, I don't think it's a problem if you're in the same room..."
Ding Anni grabbed two apples and quickly left, not forgetting to voice her true feelings: "Anyway, it's not like we've never slept together before..."
