178 Substituting Plum for Peach
Holding her English workbook, Li Wei strolled confidently towards the teaching building, savoring the livid faces of Qin Ling and Gao Yue. She felt an indescribable sense of satisfaction...
When people are proud, they easily become complacent, and complacency easily leads to trouble. On the last step of the stairs to the floor for the first-year students, because his workbook was blocking his view, he tripped and fell to his knees, sending the workbook flying everywhere.
It wouldn't have been a big deal; everyone falls down sometimes. Li Wei was nothing special, so a fall is normal. But, by sheer bad luck, Gao Jin, who had just come out of the classroom, caught a workbook in front of her with surprising agility.
Upon seeing Li Wei still kneeling there, gasping for breath in pain, she quickly came over to help her up: "How are you? Should we go see the school doctor?"
"Ouch—it's nothing, just a bump, it hurts a little, thank you." Li Wei quickly pulled her arm out of Gao Jin's grasp; this kind of melodramatic scene only made things more interesting for everyone to see.
Gao Jin didn't say anything, but bent down and started picking up the fallen exercise books. Li Wei wanted to help pick them up, but her knees hurt terribly, and it seemed she would inevitably get bruises when she got home that night.
Sigh, it's all my fault. Why did I have to act like a smug little person? Li Wei watched with a bitter face as Gao Jin placed the exercise books he had picked up into her hands one by one, seemingly working together seamlessly.
While saying thank you, Li Wei glanced around the corridor. It was during self-study time, and there weren't many people in the corridor yet. However, the occasional peeking out was so numerous that even the teachers couldn't control them, let alone her.
Li Wei rubbed her knee slowly while secretly cursing, "What kind of lousy students are these? Their discipline is terrible!"
Gao Jin, a skilled and tall man, quickly retrieved all of Li Wei's dropped books. Li Wei thanked him and hurriedly limped back to the classroom, clutching the books. This was absolutely outrageous! She almost got roasted alive today!
When school let out in the evening, everyone else was fine, but Ding Anni hopped and skipped after Li Wei: "Hey, hey! What's going on? I heard you and Gao Jin were flirting in the hallway?"
Li Wei turned around and glared at him: "Shut up, you're so annoying."
Ding Anni watched Li Wei walk away with a slight limp, carrying her schoolbag, and was a little stunned. It was the first time she'd seen Li Wei so angry with her, and Ding Anni was truly unaccustomed to it.
Ding Anni wasn't as lucky as Li Wei. She had to attend evening self-study sessions, which she didn't want to skip, but her parents were strict, and she didn't dare mention it, knowing the likely outcome. So, whenever she saw Li Wei walking home from school with her backpack, it was impossible not to feel jealous.
The first thing Li Wei did when she got home was to rush into the bathroom. Taking the opportunity to shower, she checked her still-sore knees; both were bruised, like twins, and they hurt to the touch.
Sigh. It seems she can't be a bad person. She's already injured before anything even happened. If she were to actually do something bad, that would be terrible. So frustrating!
After dinner, Li Wei was sitting on the bed reading when Luo Da called again. Now, for convenience, Li Wei had installed an extension phone in her room, and at Li Lin's strong request, she had one installed for her as well.
Li Wei reached out and answered the phone, starting a conversation. While talking to Luo Da, she wondered whether she should tell him about what happened today. After thinking about it, she decided against it. She had finally gotten some fresh air, and she didn't want him to sneak back. If he went back, his master would sentence her to life imprisonment.
Luo Da only has one hour of free time in the evening. Li Wei doesn't need to remind him. He has no choice but to hang up when the time is up, otherwise Li Wei really can't handle it. Fortunately, it's only once every two or three days. Otherwise, Li Wei would have to study and go to martial arts class at the same time, and her small body really couldn't take it.
Starting the following day, within a week, Li Wei received four warnings and threats, all from Gao Jin's fans. This struck Li Wei as unbelievable; could such a thing really exist?
She had never really admired anyone or anything, so she couldn't understand this kind of fanatical emotion. Fanatical was one thing, but to actually scare her, a weakling like her, was another. If she was so capable, why didn't she scare Gao Jin?
Of course, these Gao Jin's fans unanimously expressed their contempt for Li Wei's two-timing character, and vowed to ruthlessly expose her and let everyone see her true colors.
Li Wei initially tried to explain, but it was no use. These girls seemed bewitched; they just couldn't stand her. They simply refused to go out with anyone who tried to contact her, ignoring her completely. It was incredibly boring.
I thought this kind of thing only happened in TV dramas and novels, but I didn't expect it to actually have a real-life counterpart. I didn't realize it when I was reading the novel, but after experiencing it in person, I found that it was not like that at all. Suddenly becoming the public enemy of a small group of people was really hard for Li Wei, who is a law-abiding person.
She wasn't scared, since it really wasn't her business, but she felt like she was in a dangerous situation wherever she went. This was really hard to live like this.
This really annoyed Li Wei. Finally, when Luo Da called her again on the weekend, she couldn't help but tell him about it. She complained that Luo Da had a very common face, and that he had been mistaken for someone else twice in a row!
Luo Da pondered for a while: "Don't worry about it. Let me think of a solution. Get some sleep, okay? Be good!"
Li Wei put down the phone, but she wasn't sleepy at all, so she decided not to sleep. She picked up the textbook from the bedside table and started reading. This book also had another function: to induce sleep!
The next day, Li Wei originally wanted to go home with Li Lin, but then she remembered that she had a martial arts class that evening, so she decided against it. She spent the whole day reading at home and sweated a lot that night, which made her feel much better.
The next day was a normal school day, but at lunchtime, a girl in a snow-white fox fur coat was standing outside a beautiful car at the school gate. She was unusually charming and beautiful. She asked the students who had just come out of the gate how to get to Class 1, Grade 1. "Is Gao Jin in Class 1, Grade 1?"
Such a beautiful and captivating scene is hard to miss, especially since the person inquiring is a celebrity at the school, and recently, rumors about him have been flying everywhere.
Li Wei naturally saw it and found it somewhat unbelievable. It looked like a show, how could anyone do that? This girl was too much, her intention to deliberately attract attention was obvious.
Li Wei didn't bother to look closely and just let it pass. However, when she returned to class in the afternoon, Lin Xiao whispered mysteriously to Li Wei, "You know what? A pretty girl came to Class 1 of Grade 1 at noon today, looking for Gao Jin. She talked to him on the playground for a while before leaving. A lot of people saw her. Now everyone's saying she's Gao Jin's girlfriend. She's really bold, isn't she afraid the school and teachers will talk to her? Before, everyone was talking about you, no one believed you. Now you see, it's not you at all. These girls are really crazy!"
Li Wei quickly followed up to clarify: "That's right, how could it be me? I'm such an honest student, how could I secretly go on a date with a classmate? I'm not some street kid. Honestly, what kind of eyes do these people have? They should get glasses."
Li Wei breathed a long sigh of relief. That evening, Luo Da called to boast, "See? I'm smart, aren't I!"
Li Wei —
After Li Wei pressed him for details, Luo Da confessed that the plan was to proceed in three steps: first, find a girl to groom him; second, talk to Gao Jin; and finally, have someone spread rumors around the school immediately.
Li Wei was freed, and the little gambling god was thus put in a pocket—
