It's hard to guard against a thief in your own home for 100 years.
Li Wei, somewhat confused, followed Luo Da in a car to have dinner with Luo Sanjiu. When they arrived at the restaurant, she took advantage of everyone's inattention, jumped into a taxi, and ran home. On the way, she made up her mind: she wouldn't look for a place to stay; she would just stay in a dormitory. This city was damn dangerous.
Distracted, she didn't notice that Luo Da had been driving behind her until Li Wei entered her house, at which point he turned his car around and drove away.
Li Wei went home, took a shower, dried her hair, and lay in bed thinking, "Fine, if I'm alone, I shouldn't go out. I'll just stay home obediently. Otherwise, with Luo Da's abilities, it would be a piece of cake for him to get me back to the bandits' den."
I'll just pretend nothing happened and go about my business as usual.
Although she had mentally prepared herself, Li Wei was still somewhat puzzled. What exactly was going on? Why did this suddenly happen without any prior warning? Had that kid Luo Da taken a liking to her? It didn't seem like it. She had seen him quite often in the past two years, and he seemed perfectly normal, with nothing out of the ordinary.
Could it be that I bit him and drew blood today, which upset him? Luo Da wasn't usually this petty, was he? Didn't he often get into fights and bleed when he was little? Now that he's grown up, does he suddenly become more delicate?
Unable to figure it out, Li Wei stopped thinking about it and didn't eat dinner. She fell asleep in a daze, her last thought being that staying away from Luo Da meant staying away from danger.
The next day, Li Wei woke up early because she was hungry. She got up and took a bag of homemade biscuits from the bedside table. They were leftovers from the previous two days. They were in small packages, so they wouldn't spoil even in the hot weather. She ate a few pieces and drank some water. She lay down to try to sleep, but she couldn't fall asleep no matter what. She rolled around a few times, trying to find a comfortable position, but still couldn't sleep. So she simply gave up and didn't try to sleep at all.
I sat up against the headboard, took out my small tape recorder, put on my headphones, and listened to music.
Thinking about how she'd soon be starting high school, she wondered if she could do as well as she did in junior high. Since she had some free time, she figured she should start studying. Like the old saying goes, "Early bird catches the worm," and she was determined to get a head start—even a slow learner should see some improvement by being a month ahead.
I'll call my aunt's husband tomorrow to ask for help... no. I'll ask my aunt to find someone to help me get a complete set of first-year high school textbooks and workbooks. I'll try to go through all the main subjects in the next few days so I'll feel more confident when I go to school.
Li Wei knew perfectly well that some bright students could excel simply by listening in class, and others could achieve top marks with just a little effort. She herself wasn't either of those. She could only rely on diligent, step-by-step accumulation of knowledge.
After thinking about her worries for a long time, and feeling better in her stomach, Li Wei drifted off to sleep again. She didn't get up until late morning, her back and waist aching. The sun was already high in the sky.
Almost at the same time, Li Lin came out of the room. No one knew what she had done last night. Li Lin didn't seem to have slept well. She was wearing pajamas and yawning as she came out.
She spotted her sister immediately and perked up. She rushed over: "Sister, Yang Liqiu brought you a hat yesterday. She said Luo Jianhua arrested you. What happened? He didn't hit you, did he? He probably wouldn't dare, right?"
Li Wei cleared her throat awkwardly: "It's nothing. It's probably just a misunderstanding. It's alright, it's alright. Um, what were you doing last night? You're still not fully rested at this hour?"
Li Lin perked up immediately: "I borrowed a few novels from my classmate yesterday. They're really good. Do you want to take a look?"
"Oh. What kind of novel is it? It's not a romance novel, is it?" Li Lin's literacy level was only good enough for romance novels.
Sure enough, Li Lin nodded: "Yes, yes, do you want to see it? It's in my room."
"Don't read them, they're all lies. You should be careful too, staying up all night reading will ruin your eyes. Then it'll be harder to find your Prince Charming." She remembered when she was in college. She read all sorts of novels, but never reread them.
Li Wei didn't go out all day. She tidied up her things, putting away unused books in the storage room, and organized the rest. Before her aunt brought the books she'd bought, she could listen to and read the two English supplementary textbooks to keep herself occupied. She put the two books and the tapes on the small bookshelf by her bedside for easy access.
After a busy day, I felt sweaty and uncomfortable. After dinner, I took a quick shower and then applied a homemade egg and milk mask to my face, arms, and even legs and feet—basically, I covered every exposed part of my body. I lay on the sofa in my bedroom, listening to music and waiting for the time to pass.
Soon after, Li Lin ran up excitedly and said, "Sister, Luo Jianhua just called and said we're going on a trip tomorrow, leaving at 5:30 in the morning. He told us to get our things ready."
Li Wei snorted, "Let whoever wants to go, go ahead. I'm not going."
Because she found the numerous and noisy phone calls at home too much, Li Wei had already unplugged the extension phone in her room.
Li Lin received the notification and skipped away, probably to prepare things.
Li Wei touched her face mask, deciding she needed to wait a little longer. She continued listening to music until the mask was almost dry before getting up to take a thorough shower. After a long time, she emerged from the bathroom feeling refreshed. She applied some moisturizer, dried her hair, and then checked the clock. It was almost midnight. She quickly crawled into bed to sleep. Staying up late would mean all her previous efforts were wasted.
She had a good night's sleep and didn't even dream, but was woken up by a knock on the door. Li Lin was calling her from outside. Li Wei was still a little groggy, but she got up and opened the door for Li Lin: "What is it? It's so early in the morning. If you want to find clothes, go find them yourself." Usually, Li Wei would come to her place in the morning for clothes.
Li Wei, still half asleep, went back to bed. She'd barely lain down when Li Lin woke her up again: "Sis, you forgot? We're going on a trip today! Get up! It's almost five o'clock! Even lazybones Li Lianhui is up! Get up!"
Li Wei shook off Li Lin's hand, turned over so her back was to Li Lin, and muttered, "I'm not going, you guys go ahead, don't disturb my sleep." After saying that, she snuggled up on the soft pillow, um, so comfortable.
Li Lin panicked when she saw this: "How can that be? Didn't we agree to all go? Get up quickly, it would be bad to keep them waiting."
Li Wei didn't even open her eyes: "You guys go ahead, I said I'm not going and I'm not going. It's so hot, it's much better to stay at home. Don't bother me, or I'll get rough with you!" Right now, only Li Lin is about her level and can keep her in check. It's really sad, she can't even scare Li Lianhui anymore.
Li Wei quickly fell asleep, unaware of when Li Lin left.
She was sleeping soundly when she was shaken awake. Li Wei snuggled further into the bed, hugging her pillow contentedly, and said, "Don't wake me up, I'm not going, I'm not going." Ah, it's so comfortable lying down like this.
Li Lin didn't say anything, but a voice whispered in Li Wei's ear: "You'd better get up and come play with me, or I'll tell Li Lin that I kissed you that day, and see how your mother deals with you."
Li Wei opened her eyes abruptly. A large face was staring at her from within inches of her, almost breathing. She turned her head to look behind her. Li Lin was looking at her curiously.
This guy is so cunning! He actually dared to threaten her with something like this! I never expected this! He's such an ingrate; it seems he was wearing a sheep's clothing all along! But who am I? Back in the day, even my father wouldn't listen to threats, let alone someone like you, Luo Da!
I quickly pulled the blanket over my head. Let them tell all they want; everyone thinks we're dating anyway. It'd be strange if Mom didn't know. She can just deny it to the death then, what can she do?
Li Lin spoke up: "I told you, she didn't want to go. I said it, but she wouldn't listen. It's no use saying anything. She won't get up until the sun is high in the sky. You know how she always was the last one to arrive when we were in school. Let's just go. If she doesn't want to go, fine."
Luo Da thought to himself, "Forget it, what's the point of me being interested?" He had already decided in the past two days that he would have to keep a close eye on Li Xiaoming from now on, otherwise he wouldn't even know if the lecherous guy next to him took advantage of him, which would be incredibly stupid.
Thinking of this, Luo Da asked Li Lin, "Uncle Li and Aunt Li haven't gotten up yet, have they?"
Li Lin: "No, the doorman will be able to close the gate later. What's wrong? Oh. No need to tell my mom and the others. I already said last night that I was leaving this morning."
Oh, that makes things easier. Then he asked, "Has your sister packed her things yet?"
Li Lin looked around: "No way, she said she wasn't going, how could she pack her things?"
That's right. He instructed Li Lin, "Pack up your sister's things and bring them down. I'll get your sister down first. Hurry up."
"Huh?" Li Lin was a little confused. Her sister had already said she wasn't going, so how was he supposed to proceed?
Before she could even ask what was going on, Luo Da rolled Li Wei up in the grass-green towel like a pancake with scallions, picked her up, and carried her away. He even made sure to cover Li Wei's mouth with one hand, acting like a professional womanizer. Li Lin was dumbfounded. How could this work? Wouldn't her sister scratch him to death if she got her freedom?
Li Wei writhed and whimpered like a caterpillar, utterly speechless. "What did I do wrong? I'm a law-abiding citizen! How can I keep encountering these inexplicable things? Where is my freedom? Where are my human rights?" He tried to bite the hand covering her mouth again, but it was tightly covered by the towel, and he couldn't reach it at all.
Li Wei fully experienced what it was like to be abducted by scoundrels in the old society. It was the feeling of being helpless and desperate, like her. Most importantly, there were the onlookers, and that numb Li Lin! She actually let a wolf into the house! Didn't she see that her sister was being used?
What an unreliable person!
What angered her the most was Li Lianhui, who was waiting for her sister in Luo Da's car when he saw Hua Ge, whom she admired, come out of his house carrying something of a suspicious shape. Without asking any questions, Luo Da sent him to the car in front.
Li Wei was furious; those two traitors!
