Qin Huai returned home carrying a bag of grain. The girl showed a complicated look when she saw him. Qin Huai had seen this look once when he just woke up.
Old man Qin sighed deeply, picked up the copper-headed pipe and filled it with tobacco, then rummaged in the pocket of his jacket for a long time, took out two flints, and struck them against each other.
He couldn't light the fire for a long time, so the girl came over and said, "Grandpa, let me light it for you."
The old man handed it over with a smile. The little girl was very skillful and lit it in just a few seconds. The old man praised her and said, "Our girl is really capable."
The girl's eyes widened with laughter. The two men obviously knew the origin of the food, so they tactfully didn't ask. When Qin Huai took out a large snake, the old man asked in surprise, "Where did you get such a large worm?"
"I just happened to run into him on the mountain. I was lucky today. I dug a rat hole and found a bag of food. It's enough for our family to eat for a few days."
The three of them looked subtle after hearing this.
You are kidding me if you dig out a bag of grain from a mouse hole.
The old man finished his cigarette, knocked off the ash on the ground, stood up and said, "I won't eat anymore. I'm old, so it's okay to eat less." He ate everything that was edible and not edible, and there was no taboo.
Qin Huai hurriedly said, "Grandpa, please sit down. From now on, I will not only ensure that my two sisters have enough to eat, but you will also have to eat with us."
The old man was unwilling and said bluntly, "I can't eat this kind of food."
Qin Huai understood what he was saying and said without any embarrassment, "Master, all kinds of food nourish people. The real thing is that they can eat without feeling hungry."
"Our Qin family has been serious farmers for eight generations, and no one has ever done such a thing." Old man Qin said quietly.
Although he didn't say it explicitly, his meaning of blame was very obvious. He was just short of pointing at his nose and saying that he was shameless. A small village cannot keep secrets. The gossip of Qin Fengying and Qin Huai has probably become the after-dinner joke of the whole village.
Qin Huai said without blushing, "Master, I didn't do anything."
He really didn't do anything. The previous things were done by another Qin Huai, not me.
However, if he said this to others, I'm afraid everyone would think he was lying. In the old man's view, his words were just pretentious, like trying to cover up his own faults.
Qin Xiaomi said, "Grandpa, my brother did this for us, don't blame him."
Qin Huai said, "Xiaomi is the best."
Since the girl was there, the old man didn't say anything else and didn't mention leaving.
Someone came running in with a mutter. It was Sister Hong's son, about six or seven years old, carrying a basket of sweet potatoes. The country boy was full of energy: "Uncle Qinhuai, these are the sweet potatoes my mother asked me to bring."
Qin Huai said, "Goudan, I have some food at home. You can keep it for yourselves. Don't leave yet. Eat at my house first and then go back."
Goudan asked, "What do you eat at home?"
"Just make sure it tastes good to you."
After peeling the snake and cutting it into pieces, he walked into the kitchen and opened the jar. He saw that the bean flour was still there, and he knew that the girl was reluctant to finish it. He scooped out all the bean flour, took out three cooked sweet potatoes from the pot, washed them with cold water, and then mixed them into the flour and kneaded it into a ball like the dough.
There happened to be a bunch of dried vegetables hanging on the wall. I didn't know what they were, so I washed them and cut them.
There was only the bottom of the oil left in the jar, and he picked up the jar and poured it out. The girl saw it and grabbed it like a bomb and said, "Brother, how can you eat oil like that?"
"How do you eat?"
The girl picked up a chopstick, dipped it in the oil, and then put it into the pot.
Qin Huai waited for her next move. After a long while, seeing that she did not take any other action, he asked, "Is that all the oil?"
"Yes." The girl said as a matter of course.
"The way you release the oil would make capitalists cry."
As he spoke, he took the oil jar and poured it directly in. The girl grabbed it and hugged him, crying loudly, saying, "Brother, we need to use up the oil here until after the New Year. If you eat it all at once, what will we do in the future?"
They have enough oil for a year, but there is only a little bit at the bottom of the jar.
Qin Huai's hand couldn't help but relax. Looking at his pale and thin sister, he felt mixed emotions. No wonder you two look malnourished.
He comforted the girl and said, "Don't worry, I'm here at home. I will never let you go hungry."
The girl then let go of the jar and said, "Brother, everyone in the village lives the same way."
"I know, but this is not right. Look at both of your hair, it's as yellow as weeds. Eat more oil and get enough nutrition, so that your hair can be black and your complexion can be good."
Qin Xiaomi said, "Sister, brother is right. Having a full meal is better than starving to death in the future, than suffering every day now."
The girl said, "I'm afraid that even if you don't die, you won't have any food left. You'll be starving and miserable. I wonder if you'll still say that in the future."
For a thirteen-year-old girl, every day when she opens her eyes she worries about not having enough food to eat. Such a life is too difficult.
Qin Huai said, "Don't talk nonsense about life and death. From now on, don't worry about anything. Leave the earning of money to me."
Hearing this, Old Man Qin showed a look of surprise and doubt. This was not something Qin Huai would usually say. Could it be that his eldest grandson had come to his senses?
God has eyes, so let him wake up.
Qin Huai comforted the girl and started cooking. A handful of wild onions filled the air with fragrance. Goudan snorted, sucked down the long stream of snot and said, "Uncle Qin Huai, it smells so good."
"It smells good, eat more later."
All the oil in the jar was poured out, and there wasn't much left. Qin Huai picked out the fattier part of the snake meat and stir-fried it over high heat. He had despised the oil smoke in his previous life, but now he actually wanted to inhale a few more breaths.
