Chapter Fifteen: Testing the Waters

The woman's family wasn't poor, so it wasn't that she couldn't afford it, but she still felt the price was excessive. Being straightforward, she immediately called over the salesperson and asked directly, "Did you make a mistake with the price?"

The sales clerk glanced at it and replied with a smile, "That's right, customer. This is a new premium item that we just stocked. It's priced at 42.99 yuan per pound."

The woman's eyes widened: "You guys are ripping me off! What kind of grapes are you selling for such a high price?!"

The sales clerk's smile remained unchanged as she patiently took out a small box from the side, containing clean samples with a small disposable fork. She handed it to the woman, saying, "Customer, you can try it. Our supermarket has always been known for its high-quality products at low prices, the lowest in the industry. This new product is expensive for a reason. I guarantee that no other store in Y City has better grapes than this."

The woman, somewhat skeptical, took a piece with her fork and put it in her mouth. The salesperson continued, "Moreover, all the products in this premium section come from the same breeding base, which has been exclusively authorized to our store. We guarantee that not a single drop of pesticide is used during the growing process. They are pollution-free, purely natural, and extremely good for your health. Long-term consumption also has health benefits."

Biting into the grape and tasting the flesh, she found it indeed incredibly fragrant and exceptionally sweet, far more delicious than any grape she had ever eaten. The woman couldn't resist reaching for a second one, but halfway through, she suddenly realized her mistake, her face flushing slightly. She coughed lightly to cover it up, then said casually, "Hmm, not bad. I'll take this one."

He then took the box of grapes from before, put it in his shopping cart, and left.

The sales clerk smiled and watched her leave, then let out a long sigh of relief.

Actually, she was quite nervous. The manager came in for an emergency meeting in the morning and said that a batch of high-end fruits and vegetables were going to be put on the shelves. When she saw the price, she was shocked. Would anyone really buy such expensive fruits and vegetables?

Although the manager asked them to prepare samples of some fruits and vegetables for tasting, and confidently said that customers would definitely buy them after trying them, she still didn't quite believe it. She was actually a little unsure when she was giving those sales pitches to customers.

But to my surprise, the woman actually bought it...

Is it really that magical? So delicious that once you've tasted it, you can't resist it?

The sales clerk thought with a sense of existential doubt.

Similar scenes unfolded one after another, with the sales staff in the boutique area spending almost as much time on sales pitches in one day as they had in the previous month. Almost every customer questioned the prices of the various products, with the most common complaint being that the price tags had been pasted incorrectly. After learning that the prices were indeed correct, most people scoffed, shook their heads, and walked away, while a few chose to try the products and then found them surprisingly appealing.

Of course, many people who tried the food didn't buy it, not because the food was bad, but because they simply didn't intend to spend so much money on common vegetables and fruits. In their minds, it's just about looking good and tasting a bit better; ordinary vegetables aren't inedible. As for health issues, people in China who have been eating pesticide-treated vegetables for over a decade say they don't care at all.

That evening, in a high-end residential area, the lady of the house ate dinner alone, then washed a plate of grapes and placed it on the coffee table in the living room.

This woman was the same one from the supermarket earlier that day. Her name was Bai Bing, and she was a freelance writer with flexible hours. She didn't have many hobbies, and spent her free time traveling or shopping in supermarkets. Her husband was a senior executive at a five-star hotel, and his get off work schedule was often irregular, so she was used to eating alone.

Her husband came home quite early that day; she had just put down the grapes when she heard the door open. He came in reeking of alcohol, hadn't even taken off his shoes, and collapsed onto the sofa. The couple's relationship was still good. Bai Bing felt a pang of sympathy looking at her husband's flushed face. She took off his shoes, socks, and shirt, put them in the washing machine in the bathroom, filled the bathtub with hot water, and prepared all the necessary toiletries.

After finishing her chores, she returned to the living room and found her husband already sitting up. His eyes were still a little dazed, but his face showed a satisfied expression, and one hand was reaching for the plate on the coffee table.

The number of grapes in the plate had clearly decreased by about half, and a small pile of grape skins had accumulated in the ashtray next to it.

Bai Bing was somewhat surprised.

Her husband hates sweets the most and almost never touches fruit. In all the years they've been together, she has never seen him eat a single piece of fruit on his own initiative.

Upon seeing Bai Bing emerge, her husband looked up, grinned foolishly at her, and said, "Wife... grapes, delicious!"

Bai Bing asked, amused, "Why did you suddenly start eating this?"

The husband replied, "It smells delicious... Hmm, it's tempting me to eat it."

The man in his forties had a childlike expression on his face, a far cry from his usual impeccably dressed and elite demeanor.

Thinking of the delicious food they had tasted during the day, Bai Bing couldn't resist sitting down. The couple shared a whole plate of grapes, one after another.

Satisfied, the man got up to take a shower and go to bed. The next morning, he woke up and exclaimed in surprise, "Huh?"

Bai Bing had finished washing up and was sitting in front of her vanity taking care of her skin. Hearing her husband's voice, she turned around and asked, "What's wrong?"

The man said, "Every time I drink alcohol, I get a headache for a long time the next day, but today I don't have any headache at all, and I feel very clear-headed and energetic!"

Bai Bing knew about her husband's problem; he always suffered from a terrible headache after drinking, and medication didn't help. However, he often had to drink for social obligations, which pained her but she couldn't do anything about it. Today was actually the first time he hadn't experienced a headache after a hangover.

The couple racked their brains but still couldn't figure out the reason. Bai Bing thought of the plate of grapes she ate last night and remembered that the salesperson had said that they were good for her health, but she couldn't believe it. Grapes are just grapes, how could they be so magical?

Despite feeling uneasy, she couldn't resist going into Shenglong Supermarket when she went out in the afternoon. This time, in addition to grapes, she also bought some cucumbers and tomatoes.
