Chapter Twenty-Four: An Encounter

As the Spring Festival approached, vendors selling all kinds of Spring Festival couplets, "Fu" characters, and red lanterns were everywhere. Tang Xiaoxiao didn't drive, but strolled along the street, watching the bustling crowds with great interest.

The Chinese New Year is always the most lively time of the year, with shouts and vendors everywhere, and crowds of people carrying large and small bags hurrying about, bringing a vibrant atmosphere to the small town.

This year is the Year of the Tiger. Tang Xiaoxiao stopped in front of a small stall. The stall was not big and had various couplets on display. On a square "Fu" character, there were two cute little tigers. Tang Xiaoxiao took a liking to it at a glance and reached out to take it.

But it bumped into another hand that reached out from the side.

Tang Xiaoxiao stood up, looked up, and was stunned. The other person was also stunned and blurted out, "It's you?"

The person she happened to meet turned out to be Fang Yun, the wife of Lin Jie, Tang Xiaoxiao's ex-boyfriend.

Tang Xiaoxiao has a good memory; she remembered the other person's name after only a brief encounter at the mall.

For Tang Xiaoxiao, Fang Yun was clearly more than just a stranger she had met once.

Fang Yun looked at Tang Xiaoxiao, who was so close to him, with a very complicated expression.

She was two years older than Lin Jie, turning 25 after the New Year. Although she was still young, women who had given birth were inevitably affected. She usually took good care of herself and was in pretty good shape, but in front of the youthful and beautiful Tang Xiaoxiao, she inexplicably felt a little inferior.

Even at such close range, Tang Xiaoxiao's face was almost poreless, with snow-white skin, luscious lips, and a pair of bright, expressive eyes with slightly upturned corners, exuding an indescribable charm and allure.

With a face like that, it's no wonder her man can't forget her.

Fang Yun's feelings for Tang Xiaoxiao were very complicated.

Rationally, she knew that the other party had not had any contact with Lin Jie since their breakup many years ago, so she couldn't blame him.

Lin Jie has been absent-minded and indifferent to her lately, all because of the person in front of him. He even called out "Xiaoxiao's" name while talking in his sleep one night. As his bedmate, Fang Yun's torment during this period can be imagined.

She wasn't a weak or incompetent woman. She was angry about her husband's behavior and had the urge to leave, but the thought of her toddler son made her back down.

Once a woman has a child, she becomes tied down and can no longer be carefree and unrestrained.

She was feeling really bored today, so she left her child with her mother-in-law and went out to buy New Year's goods under the pretense of doing so, actually to clear her head. Unexpectedly, she ran into Tang Xiaoxiao.

Since the two families now live in the same town, it's not surprising that they bumped into each other. Tang Xiaoxiao felt a little uncomfortable under the other person's strange gaze, so she nodded to her and prepared to leave.

"Wait a minute," Fang Yun called out to her.

Tang Xiaoxiao didn't think she had anything to talk about with Fang Yun. She maintained her posture as if she wanted to leave, signaling to him with her eyes that he should speak quickly.

"Miss Tang," Fang Yun asked with some difficulty, "Have you graduated yet? Are you planning to stay here?"

The two were not familiar with each other, and there was really no need for such meaningless small talk, but she still answered yes.

The social circles of Tang Xiaoxiao and Lin Jie's families did not overlap. Therefore, although Tang Xiaoxiao made a lot of big moves after returning, the Lin family did not hear any news about her without making a special inquiry.

"Miss Tang, you have a bachelor's degree, right? Why don't you go to a big city to seek better opportunities? This place is a small town after all, and there's not much of a future here."

Tang Xiaoxiao gave the other person a strange look. This kind of intimate topic was not suitable for the two of them to discuss.

Tang Xiaoxiao casually replied that she wanted to spend more time with her parents, and then, impatient, she decided not to say anything more to the other person. Although she was completely open and honest, the two of them were still somewhat awkward in their relationship. With that, she left, saying, "My family is waiting for me."

Fang Yun stood there motionless for a long time, his expression unreadable.

She didn't know what she was trying to do by saying those things to Tang Xiaoxiao; her mind was a mess, and she just blurted out whatever came to mind.

Perhaps subconsciously, she was thinking that it would be better if the other person hadn't come back? Since he had been gone for so many years, he shouldn't have come back. If she couldn't see him, the deep-seated thought in Lin Jie's heart wouldn't resurface!

But what right does she have to demand that Tang Xiaoxiao not come back? This is also Tang Xiaoxiao's home, so what gives her the right to demand that Tang Xiaoxiao not return to her own home?

Is she going to be like those incompetent and unreasonable shrewish women who can't control their own men and then resent innocent women?

Feeling a deep, indescribable bitterness in his heart, Fang Yun walked aimlessly, unsure of where to go or what to do next.
