Chapter Two: The First Pot of Gold

Upon arriving at their destination, Tang Xiaoxiao got out of the car and looked up at the well-known local pharmacy from the roadside. The pharmacy, named "Ji'an Hall," occupied a three-story building in the heart of the city, where land was incredibly valuable. It was quaint and elegant, and the three large characters "Ji'an Hall" on the huge plaque were magnificent and imposing, giving it a strangely secluded feel amidst the hustle and bustle of the surrounding traffic.

This shop is said to have existed for over a hundred years, preserving its heritage even during the war-torn years, and possessing a rich history and a good reputation.

In her previous life, Tang Xiaoxiao had always suffered from dysmenorrhea. A classmate from the same city in her dormitory recommended this pharmacy to her. The pharmacy had two very famous retired traditional Chinese medicine doctors who regularly held consultations. Tang Xiaoxiao had previously come here to get some Chinese medicine, and the effect was very obvious.

Tang Xiaoxiao walked in somewhat nervously. It wasn't a doctor's day, and there were no customers in the shop at this hour. Behind the counter on the first floor, a young clerk was busy with something. Hearing footsteps, the young man looked up, saw Tang Xiaoxiao, and asked with a smile, "Hello, sir, what can I help you with?"

Tang smiled and asked, "Do you buy medicinal herbs here?"

Upon hearing this, the young man paused for a moment, subtly glancing at Tang Xiaoxiao without making her uncomfortable. Then, with his smile unchanged, he replied, "Our shop does buy medicinal herbs, but it depends on the type. What kind of herbs are you looking to sell?"

It means that ordinary medicinal herbs shouldn't be brought over. Even dandelions from the grass are considered medicinal herbs, so why would anyone accept them?

Tang Xiaoxiao understood what the other party meant and didn't feel slighted. It was understandable that they would remind her, given her young age and her sudden appearance to sell medicinal herbs. Tang Xiaoxiao reached into her backpack, pulled out a cardboard box, and handed it over; a shipping label still attached was not completely torn off.

The young man took the delivery box (?), his lips twitching slightly. However, when he opened the box and saw the contents, his eyes widened instantly. After a long while, he recovered and said to Tang Xiaoxiao, "Please wait a moment, sir, I'll go get our manager."

A few minutes later, a middle-aged man dressed in a black Tang suit came down from upstairs. He was of medium build, with a round face that made him look very amiable. He wore glasses on his nose, and his eyes behind the lenses revealed the shrewdness typical of a businessman.

The middle-aged man approached Tang Xiaoxiao, chuckled, and said, "Miss, I'm the shopkeeper here, my surname is Wang. I heard you have medicinal herbs to sell, is that right?"

Tang Xiaoxiao pushed the box in front of her forward. "This is it. Do you want it or not?"

Shopkeeper Wang carefully took the contents out of the box, his expression instantly turning serious. He then pulled out a small magnifying glass from his pocket and examined it closely.

Tang Xiaoxiao looked at Manager Wang's increasingly serious face and his ever-tightening brows, and the occasional expression of extreme heartache on his face, and felt inexplicably guilty.

The ginseng she brought to sell was the smallest one she had selected from her spatial storage. It grew on the very edge, and Tang Xiaoxiao didn't know how to harvest ginseng, so she simply dug it out roughly, shook off the remaining dirt, and broke many of its delicate roots in the process. Therefore, the ginseng's condition was actually quite poor...

Shopkeeper Wang observed for a long time before slowly raising his head and saying, "A hundred-year-old fresh wild ginseng, if well preserved, would fetch no less than ten million. But that's an auction price. Yours, young lady, was damaged due to improper digging, so its value will be greatly reduced..." As he said this, Shopkeeper Wang looked pained again, and Tang Xiaoxiao could already read from his rich facial expressions that he meant, "Which bastard is wasting such a precious resource?"

Feeling awkward, she touched her nose, then heard Manager Wang continue, "This is the highest price our shop can offer," and then he held up three fingers. "Does that seem reasonable, young lady?"

Three million?

Tang Xiaoxiao had no clear concept of the value of ginseng, only knowing that the older the ginseng, the more expensive it was, but she had no idea exactly how expensive. Three million would be a huge sum for Tang Xiaoxiao even ten years later, and the Ji'an Hall had a well-known reputation, so she figured they wouldn't take advantage of a young girl like her who didn't know the market. Although century-old ginseng was precious, it was nothing compared to the reputation built over many years. Tang Xiaoxiao chose to sell here because she trusted the old brand's credibility, so she didn't hesitate and immediately nodded in agreement, then gave them a bank account number.

Seeing her answer so readily, Manager Wang was very pleased. High-quality ginseng is now extremely rare and expensive, and acquiring such a fine specimen would surely bring him a substantial reward.

As for why Tang Xiaoxiao, a plainly dressed young girl, would possess such a treasure, that wasn't a question Manager Wang needed to concern himself with. Tang Xiaoxiao was also pleased that the other party hadn't pressed her for details about the ginseng's origin; if Manager Wang had pressed her for answers, she would definitely have given up on the shop. Both parties were satisfied, and Manager Wang quickly instructed his subordinates to complete the transaction formalities.

Tang Xiaoxiao's bank card was issued by the school. Each semester, her family would transfer money to this card to pay tuition and other fees, and then the school would deduct the money. Tang Xiaoxiao hadn't thought of this when she left home, but suddenly remembered it when she was about to make a transaction. Strictly speaking, this card wasn't very secure.

The transaction was completed half an hour later. Manager Wang warmly saw her off and told her that she was welcome to visit again in the future. Tang Xiaoxiao immediately took a taxi to the nearest bank, opened a new bank card, and transferred the huge sum of three million yuan into the card before she breathed a sigh of relief.

It's no exaggeration to say that Tang Xiaoxiao had never seen so much money at once in all her decades of past and present lives.
