Chapter 33
"What's going on? There are still people gathered around, disperse immediately!"
The policemen who came this time were two older ones, probably in their forties or fifties, and two younger ones, one of whom looked to be in his early twenties, and the other had a cucumber-like look.
The one who spoke was an older policeman who seemed to be the leader. He had a serious face, his brows were furrowed, and there were three vertical wrinkles between his eyebrows. "No organization, no discipline! Disperse!"
Everyone still listened to what the police said, but only briefly. The crowd shifted, shifted again, dispersed slightly, and then quietly gathered again. It was almost the same as before, except that it no longer surrounded the parties so tightly.
The youngest policeman tried to shoo them away, but the other officer pulled him back and shook his head. It was the first time they'd encountered so many curious people; anyone who didn't know would have thought they were watching a sideshow. Both of them looked at the older policeman, but he didn't even glance over, as if he didn't even notice the onlookers.
"Tell me, what's going on?"
"Let me speak first!" Xie's mother shouted, "Comrade police, you have to make the decision for us..."
The young policeman frowned at Zhang Yu and Xu Gaojie, then looked at Xie Liang with sympathy, thinking to himself, this guy is so miserable!
The two veteran policemen listened to what had happened. The leading one looked at Director Yao and said, "Director Yao, we'll take the man away first. Do you have any objections?"
Director Yao quickly shook his head and said, "You can take it away. If your company needs anything, we will fully cooperate with you. Just contact us when the time comes." Just kidding, what else could he say? The evil spirit in front of him has spoken.
"Okay, let's take it away first." said the leader.
"I won't leave - ah - my child -" Zhang Yu lay down on the ground, holding his stomach and wailing.
The old policeman's expression remained unchanged. "Stomachache? Third brother, go and take a look."
The policeman named "Lao San" understood and put his hand on Zhang Yu's wrist.
Zhang Yu threw him away and quickly crawled to Xie Liang's legs. "Xie Liang, my stomach hurts—"
Onlookers: No way! Even now, she's still calling him Xie Liang. Is she sure Xie Liang will take care of her?
Xie Liang's eyes were bloodshot. He hardened his heart, took two steps back, and turned his head away from Zhang Yu.
"Okay, you look good now. Take them all away. If you hinder us again, you will be punished more severely!" The leader became impatient.
Two young policemen, one in charge of Zhang Yu and the other in charge of Xu Gaojie, two old policemen led the way in front, and Xie Liang and Xie's mother, who was gritting her teeth and cursing, followed behind.
As the police led the group away, quite a few people followed. Ugh! This isn't a good thing. You mainly want to see how this thing plays out, right?
"Director Yao, when can we get a new person to manage our compound? Look at the current situation, I really can't handle it. Or can you see if we can talk to the people in Courtyard No. 2, like that Xue Zhengchu, and switch houses with him and let him be the manager, is that okay?" The aunt who was in charge of the compound in question came forward with a worried look on her face and said.
She really didn't want to be in charge! Every other compound was vying for the position. Look at Compound No. 2; none of them got the job. But in her compound, no one wanted it, and yet she got it by lottery. What bad luck! There's no benefit, and she's offended people, and they're not allowed to leave. How can she justify this?!
Director Yao: "Well, can we just change it? Okay, you take care of it for now."
"Director Yao, who was that old policeman just now? I saw you were so afraid of him, no, respectful of him?" After seeing Director Yao finish talking to the aunt in charge, someone asked.
Director Yao narrowed his eyes, looked off into the distance, and warned everyone earnestly, "He...don't offend him, he's not someone you can easily mess with..."
Some people were unconvinced, "Is this true? He looks quite old, and he's still on duty. He shouldn't be an official, right?"
Director Yao scoffed. Believe it or not, he was the head of the neighborhood office, not their parents. "Alright, everyone, go away."
Bi Chunliu was mixed in the crowd, recalling the appearance of the old policeman she had just seen. She felt that he looked very familiar. Where had she seen him before?
Bi Weiguo and the two Liu brothers came down from the wall and touched their stomachs. "Sister, let's go home. I'm hungry."
"Okay, let's go home." Bi Chunliu thought about it for a while but couldn't remember anything, so he gave up.
When I got home, Bi Xiahe had already returned, but Bi Qiuguo had not yet returned home. He asked Bi Weiguo to go find his sister. Bi Chunliu took Bi Xiahe to cook dinner. It was actually very simple. She just rolled out the noodles. Bi Chunliu also cut a small pickle as a side dish, and dinner was ready.
After dinner in the evening, Bi Qiuguo hurriedly finished his homework, asked Bi Chunliu to check it, told him to go to Cai Xiaorong's house, and then hurried out again.
Bi Chunliu: ...Bi Qiuguo's curiosity is truly burning. She also saw that Cai Xiaorong's grandmother seemed to have followed her to the police station. I wonder if she's returned yet?
Looking at Bi Weiguo who was dawdling, Bi Chunliu thought to herself that one should be prepared with quick-acting heart pills when helping children with their homework. Just seeing him dawdling made her angry. Her eyebrows raised, "What? Have you finished?"
Bi Weiguo was so frightened that he quickly lowered his head and said in a muffled voice, "Not yet." He was filled with regret. He forgot to borrow homework from Shuanzi. What should he do now? Was he going to be beaten today? It was supposed to be a wonderful day with food, fun and entertainment. If he got beaten, it would cast a shadow on the whole day...
Bi Weiguo suddenly laughed foolishly. His last two sentences were so talented...
Bi Chunliu: I thought there was something wrong with this unfortunate child! Oh, if that doesn't work out, I'll just send the second child to learn something else. He really doesn't seem to have much talent for studying.
It was almost nine o'clock before Bi Weiguo finally finished his homework.
Bi Chunliu and Bi Xiahe carefully picked out and put away the things they brought down from the mountain. Bi Chunliu began to check Bi Weiguo's homework.
Oh! Never mind. Sometimes letting him go is also letting myself go. "Go wash up." Bi Xiahe, who was sitting next to him, opened her mouth to say something, but in the end, she couldn't say it. Studying was not something that she and her elder sister could force.
Bi Weiguo went out obediently.
"Wait, Weiguo, go look for Qiuguo. Why hasn't this little girl come back yet?"
Bi Qiuguo pushed open the door and said, "Don't look for me, big sister. I'm back."
After entering the house, she gulped down a bowl of water, wiped her mouth, and sat down next to Bi Chunliu. "Sister, do you know what Grandma Cai said?"
"What did you say?" Bi Weiguo washed his face and went into the house, followed by Nie Xiangnan from the Nie family. It was she who was talking.
Nie Xiangnan: "Sister Chunliu, I heard Weiguo say that Qiuguo knows what's going on, so I came to listen." She went into the house and gave Bi Chunliu and the others a handful of melon seeds.
Because of what happened in her previous life, Bi Chunliu didn't like the people of the Nie family very much, but since Nie Xiangnan was there, she didn't say anything and let her sit down casually. The few of them listened to Qiu Guo tell her the second-hand information she got from Grandma Cai.
The police were professional after all, and through a mixture of intimidation and questioning, they had now fully understood the situation surrounding Zhang Yu and Xu Gaojie. Both were suspected of hooliganism and would likely receive several years in prison. Prison time was a given, and the police had been debating whether to wait until after Zhang Yu gave birth or send her to jail immediately. After all, sending a pregnant woman to jail wasn't appropriate.
"Do you remember the police officer named 'Lao San'? Grandma Cai said that Lao San suddenly said that he hadn't found any signs that Zhang Yu was pregnant."
"ah??"
Nie Xiangnan grabbed Bi Qiuguo's hand and asked, "Didn't my mom say that woman went to the hospital? Did the doctor make a mistake?"
Bi Qiuguo nodded, then shook his head. "The police also took the doctor in. It turns out that one of the doctor's apprentices knew Zhang Yu. He helped Zhang Yu create a fake medical checkup form. According to Zhang Yu's confession, he also promised that if Zhang Yu didn't get pregnant and give birth to a child by then, he would help Zhang Yu steal one from the hospital. Now that man has been arrested, it seems that his teacher will also be punished because of him."
"Oh my god..."
Bi Chunliu threw the melon seed shells to the ground and patted the foam on his hands. "This guy sounds quite experienced. He even thought of something as bold as stealing a child. This is not the first time he has done this, right?"
Several people looked at each other in surprise and said hesitantly: "I don't think so..."
Bi Xiahe frowned, "Sister, let's tell the police. If this is true, how many children must have been taken away by him?"
"How about this, isn't Li Musheng from the Third Hospital from the Security Department? I'll go talk to him. It might at least give the police comrades a reminder." Bi Chunliu hoped that he was really overthinking it, otherwise this matter would be too big and would affect so many families.
Li Musheng happened to be home today, and when Bi Chunliu and Bi Xiahe knocked on the door, he was stunned. He wasn't as familiar with the people in the compound as his mother. He had heard Aunt Wang say that the Bi family, with one sister and three younger siblings, didn't live very well. Perhaps he hadn't expected them to come looking for him, so he was the only one at home and didn't invite the sisters in. "What do you want to talk to me about?"
Bi Chunliu briefly stated their speculation, and Li Musheng immediately realized the importance of this matter. "Okay, I'll go right away. You guys go back first."
As the two sisters turned into the second courtyard from the small alley, they heard Li Musheng running away.
Bi Xiahe felt uneasy, "Sister, if that person really did something like this, what would happen to the families whose children were stolen?"
Bi Chunliu didn't know what it would feel like if this really happened to her. In her past life, when she had nothing better to do, she'd read a lot of novels, some of which were about true and false daughters and true and false young masters, describing situations similar to this. "Oh, I don't know. I hope we're just overthinking it." Then she changed the subject, "I wonder if Qiuguo has finished talking. It's time for us to go to bed."
When they entered the house, Nie Xiangnan had already gone home. Bi Qiuguo had finished washing up and was waiting for her two sisters to come home. Then they went to the bathroom together. The light near the bathroom had not been repaired yet.
By the time everything was ready, it was almost ten o'clock.
Urging her younger siblings to go to bed, Bi Chunliu listened to her two sisters' breathing becoming longer and longer, and slowly fell asleep herself. Little did she know that, based on her words, the police would follow the clues and learn more about the crimes committed by Zhang Yu's classmate, and then successfully arrest the mother of the classmate who had asked her son to take over.
