Chapter 7 Cooking and going to school
Zhang Wanwan was secretly delighted. This dream was so beautiful. It would be great if it were true.
Zhang Wanwan felt someone calling her in a daze. She opened her eyes immediately, thinking about waking up. After a moment, she saw her mother standing at the door of her room. "Don't sleep anymore. If you continue to sleep, you won't be able to sleep tonight. Mom is going to buy some vegetables. Go wash your face and wake up."
Zhang Wanwan nodded blankly, her heart still pounding even after her mother passed away. She tore off the Band-Aids on her fingers, stared at her flawless white fingers, and silently chanted "spiritual spring water will come out". Immediately, dense water droplets appeared on her hands. She chanted "spiritual spring water will be taken back" again, and those water droplets immediately disappeared without a trace. It was so real that it couldn't be more real. Zhang Wanwan cried with joy, hugged the quilt and cried for a while before she calmed down. Thinking that she must not let Zhang's mother notice anything unusual, she immediately went to the bathroom and took a shower.
When Zhang's mother came back, she had many more plastic bags in her hands. She said happily, "I used to buy vegetables in the morning. This is the first time I go to the market in the afternoon. I didn't expect that the things are cheaper than in the morning. I saved a few dollars."
The market that Zhang's mother mentioned is a newly planned market. In the past two years, small third- and fourth-tier cities like Pu City have also started planning. Demolition and construction are taking place everywhere, and the previously messy market stalls have been moved into the newly built market. The stall fees have gone up after the market was renovated, and vegetable prices have also increased a lot. Zhang's mother is a frugal person, so it's no wonder she was so happy to hear such news.
Zhang Wanwan felt sad when she listened to this. In her previous life, her parents worked so hard to pay back the debt, and they saved money and finally paid it back. But because she was ignorant and insisted on going to a private school, she was under heavy financial pressure. When she finished three years of high school, Zhang's mother was diagnosed with cancer, which made the poor family even worse. Zhang's mother felt sorry for the monthly medical expenses, so she gave up after a year of treatment and refused to go to the hospital again. She relied on medicine every month to get by, but even so, the family still owed a lot of foreign debts, which made Zhang's mother even more depressed. Her condition did not improve but became more and more serious. Thinking of this, Zhang Wanwan wanted to slap herself in the face and swore to let her parents live a good life in this life.
"Mom, let me help you make dinner. You've been running around all day and you must be tired. Go and have a rest." Zhang Wanwan stepped forward to take the things. Zhang's mother did not refuse. She kept repeating that she should focus on her studies, but she could not hide her smile. She did not go to bed and followed Zhang Wanwan to the kitchen to see what she was doing.
Originally thought that her daughter, who had never done housework, could not even tell the difference between sugar and salt, unexpectedly, Zhang Wanwan was not at all flustered when she entered the kitchen. She first picked and washed the vegetables, and then washed the pot. She handled things in an orderly manner. Zhang's mother, who had been careless at first, had to pay attention.
Zhang Wanwan chopped the garlic, ginger and green onion and set them aside. Then she looked up and asked her mother, "Mom, just stir-fry a plate of cabbage and a plate of chopped green onion eggs, right?"
Zhang's mother nodded hesitantly, and she bought a cabbage, a handful of green onions and two duck eggs. Apart from making these two dishes, there was nothing else she could do. What surprised her was how skillful Zhang Wanwan was as a cook.
"Girl, have you ever sneaked into the kitchen before?" Zhang's mother asked curiously.
Zhang Wanwan couldn't find a reason and could only nod obediently.
Zhang's mother stammered twice, but finally said nothing. She just stood quietly outside the kitchen and watched. She reminded Zhang Wanwan of some things that she had not expected, which was also like teaching her how to cook.
Zhang Wanwan would turn her back to her mother, and when she wasn't paying attention, she would secretly drop a small drop of spiritual spring water into the rice pot. Watching the spiritual spring water enter the pot, she felt a little relieved, thinking that if she could subtly transform her parents' bodies in this way, would her mother not follow in her past life's footsteps?
The meal was just ready when Zhang's father came back. As soon as he entered the door, he said with an exaggerated expression: "Eh? What delicious food are we making today? I can smell it downstairs!"
Zhang's mother spat at him and scolded him with a smile, "You are so sweet-mouthed. Your daughter cooked today and she took care of all the meals. Go wash your hands and eat."
"Hey! My girl is so awesome!" Father Zhang gave Zhang Wanwan a thumbs up and happily went to wash his hands and eat.
I thought Mr. Zhang was exaggerating, but after taking a bite of the rice, Mrs. Zhang's face changed. She said in great surprise, "Why do I feel that the rice today is different? It's delicious."
The rice is still the same rice, the water is still tap water, and the pot is still the same pot, so why does the taste differ so much?
Zhang's mother looked left and right, up and down, but couldn't figure it out.
Father Zhang said proudly: "I told you, my girl is amazing and you still don't believe me!"
"Eating won't stop you from talking!" Mother Zhang picked up a piece of cabbage for Father Zhang with chopsticks and glared at him. She didn't say anything, but in her heart she agreed with what Father Zhang said.
I don’t know if it was an illusion, but after eating dinner with Zhang Wanwan, the couple slept very soundly. In the past, Zhang’s mother had to wake up twice in the middle of the night, but this time she slept until dawn and slept very comfortably.
If a person sleeps well, his temper will also improve. Zhang's mother was still humming a song while cooking in the morning.
Zhang Wanwan was awakened by the pendulum clock outside. She looked at the time and saw that it was only six o'clock. She wanted to turn over and continue sleeping, but she couldn't sleep because of the loud noise outside. She had to get up, brush her teeth and wash her face, and recite Chinese and English by the way. She had breakfast before seven o'clock and went out for school.
It only takes ten minutes to ride a bike from her home to school, and morning reading has not started yet.
After so many years, Zhang Wanwan was filled with emotion as she stepped into her familiar alma mater again. She found her class according to her memory, but was embarrassed when she stepped into the classroom. She only remembered who her deskmate was but couldn't remember where she sat at all.
Just as she was hesitating about what to do, her desk mate rushed in hurriedly.
Feng Ying greeted Zhang Wanwan with a bright smile, "Good morning, beautiful lady!"
Zhang Wanwan gave a helpless smile and rolled her eyes at her. Feng Ying knew that Zhang Wanwan was thin-skinned and could not stand being teased, so she immediately gave in and dragged her back to her seat. Zhang Wanwan just went along with her wishes and let her do whatever she wanted without saying a word.
The two had just sat down when Zhang Wanwan's male classmates came to her to ask for weekend homework. They said bluntly, "Miss Wanwan, can you lend me your test paper so I can copy it?"
Zhang Wanwan had no choice but to give it to him. This situation existed in every class in every school, not to mention their junior high school, which was a public school in a district. The quality of the students admitted was uneven. There were very few good students and most of them were just here to get by with terrible grades. There were ten classes in a grade, and on average less than half of the students in each class were studying. The rest of them would make trouble for the teacher in class, either secretly playing basketball or gathering in twos and threes to discuss cosmetics, like glamorous bar girls. It was simply harder than climbing to the sky to expect these students to do their homework. She knew it was wrong to give her homework to others to copy, but she would not be so stupid as to refuse and offend others. Anyway, the high school entrance examination would be in three months, and everyone would go their separate ways and would not have any intersection by then. She could just endure it.
