Jiang Ru had overheard their argument long ago, and she was waiting for Jiang Xin to become disappointed in Yan Ling.
Just as Jiang Ru was about to go back to sleep, there was a knock on her door. Knowing full well who it was, she asked, "Who is it?"
"Mom, it's me. I'm going to work now. Could you watch An'an for me for a while?"
Even though Jiang Ru disliked Jiang Xin, she couldn't ignore An An. She got up, opened the door, and took the child from Jiang Xin.
"Go ahead, but close the door behind you."
"Thank you, Mom. I'm off to work now."
Jiang Xin felt dizzy and unsteady on her feet. She didn't dare ride her electric bike, so she hailed a taxi at the entrance of her residential complex to go to work.
When her colleagues noticed her pale face, they advised her to take a day off. Wang Shihan bluntly said, "What's wrong with you? You look terrible. Go look in the mirror and see if you're really happy right now."
Jiang Xin felt an inexplicable discomfort, but she remained stubborn: "It's none of your business. Whether I'm happy or not is my own business."
Wang Shihhan scoffed at her self-deception, "This is a financial company, please mind your image. You're here to work, not some old lady going to the market to buy groceries!"
"A middle-aged woman? She said she was a middle-aged woman?"
Jiang Xin stumbled into the company restroom and saw a disheveled woman in the mirror.
Her hair was a little messy, her eyes were slightly sunken, and she had two huge dark circles under her eyes. There was no light left in her eyes. Her lips were pale, her face was bluish, and she looked extremely haggard and withered. She was like a flower that had lost its nourishment and was gradually withering away.
She stared at herself in the mirror in disbelief, silently shedding tears.
That day, when people from the company passed by the restroom, they could hear faint crying coming from inside.
