Chapter 157 Telecommunications and the Starlink Project (7k)

After a moment's thought, Zhao Ye contacted Rex Eden and instructed him to go to England to acquire the British telecommunications company.

After arranging these things, Zhao Ye closed his eyes to rest, secretly pondering whether there were any problems with his decision.

With its current financial resources, Wujiang Group is fully capable of acquiring Hong Kong Telecom and British Telecom and developing them.

If that British telecommunications company had started developing GSM in 1988, its growth rate might have been even faster than in the previous life. When it "sold oranges at exorbitant prices," the price might have been even higher.

Zhao Ye did not actually intend for Wujiang Group to make a major foray into the traditional telecommunications industry.

This is a very complex matter. Without government backing, it's very difficult to succeed. At best, they could acquire Hong Kong Telecom to showcase and promote CDMA technology.

He'd rather follow Musk's example and wait for the right time to launch the "Starlink" project, sending out 42,000 satellites to create a space-based internet.

This investment, which is only four or five hundred billion US dollars, is more cost-effective than investing tens of trillions of RMB in building 5G, allowing people to enjoy internet services anywhere in the world.

Zhao Ye pondered that he could establish SpaceX, a space exploration technology company, in Hong Kong to develop rockets and satellites, and ultimately realize the plan to launch rockets from the sea.

Launching rockets from the sea had already been successfully demonstrated in the past.

In 1995, Boeing of the United States, Aker Company of Norway, Kbyuzhnoye/poyuzhmash of Ukraine, and Energia Rocket and Space Company of Russia jointly funded the establishment of Sea Launch Company.

China later launched its first sea-based rocket in the Yellow Sea, securing commercial launch service contracts worth over a billion yuan.

There are reasons why rocket launch companies around the world want to develop sea-based launch technology.

Because the equatorial region has the highest linear velocity of Earth's rotation at 465.1 meters per second, the closer a satellite is to the equator, the better it can utilize the force of Earth's rotation. This can even reduce the rocket's takeoff weight by 28%, increasing its carrying capacity and reducing launch costs.

When launching geostationary satellites with a small inclination, launching from the sea near the equator can avoid changes in the orbital plane during satellite orbit transfer, significantly improving rocket carrying capacity and satellite on-orbit lifespan. These factors demonstrate the economic advantages of sea-based rocket launches.

However, there is another important factor and difference: with land-based launches, there are national borders, and you can't launch from other countries. Even if you want to launch from another country, you need to reach an agreement with that country. But with ocean launches, because it's in international waters, theoretically any country's rocket launch can be moved to any area, as long as it's in international waters, so this is its biggest advantage.

Zhao Ye stood up, poured himself a glass of water, and slowly walked to the French windows, murmuring, "If I were to establish SpaceX now, the technology for launching rockets at sea would likely require years of accumulated expertise before any breakthroughs are possible. However, I can wait. Once sea-based rocket launches are successful, my SpaceX will be even more impressive than Musk's SpaceX..."

After a pause, Zhao Ye said in a low voice, "Naturally, the cost of the Starlink project will become lower!"
