When Zou Huaiwen took a look, he saw that the "Boundless VCD" was a shiny black box, very similar to a video recorder.
"Manager Lou, how do I use this?" Zou Huaiwen asked again.
"Press this button and the CD drive will eject. Then insert the disc, push the drive back in, and it will automatically start playing the movie! I'll demonstrate it for you now!"
"Okay, you can demonstrate. There's a TV right here!"
Lou Hongfei quickly demonstrated how to use VCD to Zou Huaiwen.
Zou Huaiwen nodded secretly. This VCD player was almost no different from a video recorder, except that the videotapes were replaced with discs.
Many people in Hong Kong have bought VCRs, and Raymond Chow himself uses one, so he wasn't particularly interested in Wujiang's VCDs.
He felt that Wujiang's VCD product was likely to fail.
However, this has nothing to do with Golden Harvest. Since Wujiang wants the VCD film and television rights, then let's sell them to them. Golden Harvest can make an extra profit, so why not?
"What price is Wujiang planning to offer for the film and television rights?" Zou Huaiwen asked.
Upon hearing this, Lou Hongfei immediately stated, "Wujiang is willing to offer HK$30 million to purchase all of Golden Harvest's film and television copyrights, but only for VCDs."
Logically, this 30 million HKD should be considered a windfall, but Raymond Chow was still not entirely satisfied. Golden Harvest had produced many classic films since its inception, and if Wujiang Film Studio only spent 30 million HKD to acquire it, it seemed like Golden Harvest had lost out. If the VCD became popular, Golden Harvest would have essentially sold the copyright at a bargain price.
“Manager Lou, if you want to acquire the copyright, it will cost at least HK$60 million. Otherwise, I will absolutely not agree,” Zou Huaiwen stated.
However, Lou Hongfei was also unwilling to accept Zou Huaiwen's offer, but fortunately he had a Plan B.
"Then I won't buy the whole package. I'll just select the rights to a portion of the works and price them based on how much the film does at the Hong Kong box office..."
Zou Huaiwen thought about it and decided that this was acceptable.
At this point, Lou Hongfei had his assistant bring out a document listing the local box office figures for each of Golden Harvest's films since its inception, as well as the quote given by Wujiang.
Zou Huaiwen was slightly surprised, thinking to himself that the other party had indeed come prepared and had made ample preparations.
I carefully reviewed the other party's quote.
For local box office earnings exceeding HK$5 million but less than HK$10 million, the asking price is HK$50,000.
For local box office earnings exceeding HK$10 million but less than HK$20 million, the asking price is HK$300,000.
The local box office has exceeded HK$20 million, with an offer of HK$500,000.
Zou Huaiwen was still not satisfied and shook his head.
Seeing this, Lou Hongfei spread his hands and said, "I have one last way to cooperate, Mr. Zou. If you don't agree, then we can only cooperate another time."
"What kind of cooperation?" Zou Huaiwen asked in a deep voice.
"According to the profit sharing ratio, for every work that belongs to Golden Harvest sold or leased, Wujiang will give Golden Harvest 20% of the profit sharing."
Upon hearing this, Zou Huaiwen hesitated for a moment. Although he wasn't very optimistic about VCDs, Wujiang had consistently proven its success, so he was willing to take the gamble. With that in mind, Zou Huaiwen immediately made his decision, saying, "Okay, let's cooperate in this way!!!"
