Chapter 12 The Fox Spirit

Sun Gui used a rifle back then. He would pull down the bolt to eject the spent cartridge, load a bullet, and then fire the next shot.

Sun Gui loaded the gun with bullets, then ran into a deep ditch, following the trail of blood left by the rabbit.

He followed the trail of blood to a cave and saw the blood running into the cave; the rabbit must have run into the cave.

Just as he was about to enter the cave, he saw a girl of about 18 years old carrying a half-basin of water out of the cave. The girl was very beautiful, and her right calf was injured and bleeding.

The girl sat on a rock, placed a basin of water on the ground, and then washed the bloodstains from the wound on her leg.

Sun Gui was certain that this girl was not human at all; she was the girl transformed from the rabbit that had become a spirit earlier.

Since you know it's become a spirit, just leave. Apologize and say a few kind words. You really can't mess with this kind of creature.

But he didn't do that. He said, "It's no use you turning into a human; you're just a rabbit that has become a spirit."

After Sun Wang finished speaking, he raised his gun, pointed the muzzle at the girl's head, and fired a shot. The girl fell to the ground and turned into a wild rabbit after she died. This rabbit was truly a spirit; it was exceptionally large and was a female rabbit.

Sun Gui brought the sentient female rabbit home and took a skinning knife to skin it. In a moment of carelessness, he cut his hand with the knife.

Normally, a red wound heals very quickly, in just two or three days.

However, it didn't get better for six months. Later, the wound became infected and festered, and it couldn't be cured no matter what treatment was given.

That night, he told his wife about the rabbit incident he had caused six months ago. After listening, his wife said, "Rabbits can become spirits and transform into people. Why did you still kill it? Aren't you just looking for trouble? It's probably haunting you after it died. You'll die if you keep doing this."

Sun Gui was terrified after hearing his wife's words. He had been thinking that the rabbit spirit was the culprit, and he dreamed of the girl that the rabbit had transformed into every night. But what could he do about it?

The next day, Sun Gui prepared offerings, incense, and paper money, and the couple went to the entrance of the rabbit burrow where they had hunted rabbits half a year ago.

Sun Gui placed the offerings on the stone, and his wife lit incense and paper money, then knelt on the ground to pray with her husband.

The couple suddenly heard a woman speaking behind them: "You've finally arrived. I've been waiting for you here for half a year."

The woman's words were chilling; the couple felt a chill run down their spines. They turned to look at the woman, and Sun Gui asked in surprise, "It's you?"

Standing behind them was the same girl who had transformed from a rabbit six months ago. She said, "You think you can kill me? All you've done in six months is kill a rabbit."

It turns out she wasn't the rabbit from six months ago, but a fox spirit who lived in this cave. Six months ago, an injured rabbit ran into the cave, and she wanted to save it. The fox spirit transformed it into human form and took a basin of water outside the cave to wash its wounds. Unexpectedly, Sun Gui killed it and took it away.

Only then did Sun Gui realize why the girl who had transformed into a rabbit hadn't said a word before she died: the fox spirit had used magic to turn her into human form, and she herself couldn't speak.

If this vixen hadn't been kind-hearted, Sun Gui would definitely be alive today.

"What you killed half a year ago was just a rabbit. If you had really killed me, my spirit could have killed you too, believe it or not. Go back now, and do more good deeds in the future. You dare not touch spirits that have become sentient."

After the fox spirit finished speaking, she turned and walked towards the cave.

A week after Sun Gui and his wife returned home, the injury on his hand was healed.

Dong Qing stopped in his tracks, deciding not to pursue the matter regardless of whether the legend was true or false, and turned to walk down the mountain.

Dong Qing carried six wild rabbits into the city and went into a braised rabbit shop.

The braised rabbit sold in the shop is usually domestic rabbit. The taste of domestic rabbit is far inferior to that of wild rabbit. Both are priced higher, and wild rabbit sells much better than domestic rabbit. Even so, the owner rarely gets to buy wild rabbit, mainly because there are too few hunters in the area.

Dongqing asked, "Boss, would you like some wild rabbit?"

Dong Qing used to come to the shop to sell rabbits quite often, and he knew the owner. When the owner saw the six wild rabbits he was carrying, he said with surprise, "Of course I want them! You haven't been here in a long time. You caught so many today?"

Dong Qing said, "Every time I come here, I buy this much. How much is it per pound?"

The shopkeeper said, "I bought domestic rabbits for three cents a pound, the same price as always."

Dongqing used to sell his fruit to the boss for four cents a pound; the old price means that price remains the same.

Dong Qing said, "The rabbits I hunted are wild game. Don't think I don't know the market price. The price you paid me before was too low. From now on, you have to pay me at least 50 cents a pound, otherwise I'll sell them elsewhere. Even at 50 cents a pound, they're still in high demand!"

How could the shopkeeper let such a plump rabbit go? He said, "Five cents it is, but the price can't be raised any further, or I won't make any profit."

Dong Qing said, "Okay, you weigh it!"

A rabbit usually weighs over five pounds, so six wild rabbits weigh a total of thirty-six pounds. At five cents per pound, eighteen pounds would be eighteen dollars.

This income is already pretty good. Wages have increased in the last two years, and a day's work only earns about 1.5 yuan.

Dongqing walked into the braised meat shop. Braised meat was 1.2 yuan per pound. He bought 2 yuan worth of braised meat and carried it home.

Back home, Li Yuzhu saw the braised meat her husband was carrying and said, "You can't make much money hunting rabbits! You can't spend money like this!"

Dongqing took the remaining sixteen yuan out of his pocket and handed it to his wife, saying, "This is the money I earned from hunting rabbits today. You can keep it."

Dong Qing used to gamble away all the money he made from hunting rabbits; Li Yuzhu never saw a penny of it and had no idea how much he could earn. She took the money from her husband, counted it, and said, "You can earn this much money in a day?"

"There are few hunters in the mountains, so it's normal to earn this much money in a day."

After Dong Qing finished speaking, he took the braised meat into the kitchen, placed it on the cutting board, sliced it, and plated it. He then grabbed a clove of garlic and two pairs of chopsticks, went into the house, and placed the plate on the dining table.

Li Yuzhu had already prepared the porridge. Dong Qing ladled two bowls of porridge onto the table and said, "Put the child in bed. We'll only have meat tonight."

Li Yuzhu put her son on the bed in the bedroom, turned around and sat down at the dining table. Dong Qing picked up a pair of chopsticks and handed them to his wife, saying, "I didn't put any seasoning on it; the braised meat tastes better with its original flavor."

Li Yuzhu picked up her chopsticks, took a piece of meat, and put it in her mouth. It tasted so delicious; she rarely ate braised meat.

She said, "It smells so good! I could eat this kind of braised meat only once or twice a year."

Dongqing peeled a head of garlic and handed it to his wife, saying, "Braised pork tastes even better with garlic. If you like it, I'll buy you braised pork every day when I come home."

Li Yuzhu said, "I was just saying, but you absolutely mustn't do that. Even if you have money, you can't just spend it recklessly. You have to be careful with your money when you're living a frugal life."
