Chapter 29 The Difficult Life of a Widow

Li Yuzhu asked, "Also, there's been a lot of rain this autumn. Does your factory have any canvas sheds? The weather is too gloomy today, so we'll cover the goods after we finish loading them."

The factory manager said, "Our porcelain factory can't do without canvas sheds. I'll give you one. We have rope in the warehouse, so you don't need to buy any. I'll send someone to deliver it to you in a bit."

"Thank you, Uncle."

Dong Qing walked out of the porcelain factory and headed straight for his father-in-law's house.

As luck would have it, on my way home I ran into Su Guifang, who was holding the hand of a five-year-old girl who looked a lot like her; she was obviously her biological daughter.

Su Guifang smiled when she saw Dong Qing and said, "Oh, it's my brother-in-law! Are you home?"

There's only one road home, so Dongqing had no reason to lie. He said, "Oh, it's you, sister-in-law! Why are you back so soon?"

Su Guifang said, "My family home is at the west end of the town. After finishing our meal, I brought my daughter back."

Su Guifang and Dong Qing were not familiar with each other. They just exchanged greetings and then went their separate ways without saying anything more.

Su Gui walked slowly with the child, while Dong Qing walked ahead of her on her way home.

In Dong Qing's opinion, Su Guifang was an upright woman, not at all like the rumors. If she were the kind of woman who was promiscuous, her words and actions would reveal it.

In fact, Su Guifang was a very upright woman. Her husband had been dead for several years, and she had never had an affair. In those days, even the most virtuous woman would attract gossip once she became a widow. If she spoke more than a few words to a man, people would make up all sorts of stories about her.

What does it mean to say that a widow's door is always full of gossip? It means that even when there's nothing wrong, something will happen. People in those days had nothing better to do than gossip.

So Su Guifang just greeted Dong Qing, saying that her current situation was too fragile, and she didn't say anything else. She didn't want to bring unnecessary gossip to herself and Dong Qing. If Dong Qing couldn't see this, he would have lived in vain.

Li Yuzhu returned to the warehouse and, together with two workers, untied and exchanged the goods. Three hours later, the truck was full. The dispatcher calculated the costs: this truckload of goods was cheaper than the previous one, but more valuable. It carried 8,600 yuan worth of goods, 300 yuan more than the last time. This truckload was much higher than the previous one.

Li Yuzhu walked into the accounting and cashier's office, where the factory manager happened to be. Li Yuzhu took out the payment for the previous truckload of goods from her bag and handed it to the cashier, saying, "This is the payment for the previous truckload of goods, a total of eight thousand three hundred yuan. Please count it."

After the cashier counted the money, she said it was exactly eight thousand three hundred yuan. The factory manager said, "Take one hundred yuan less from her."

After hearing this, the cashier took out 100 yuan and returned it to Li Yuzhu. The factory manager continued, "I'll take 100 yuan off you. It's not easy driving a truck. Don't be too frugal and buy some good food on the way."

Li Yuzhu put the money into her bag and said, "Thank you, Uncle. I won't be polite."

Li Yuzhu walked out of the office, went to the tractor, got on, started the tractor, and drove out of the factory gate, heading home along the town's road.

She drove to her house, parked, turned off the engine, got out of the car, and went inside. Her mother had already prepared lunch and said, "Go to your room and call your son-in-law to come out for lunch."

"Okay, I'll go get him."

Li Yuzhu responded and went into the bedroom, reaching out to wake her sleeping husband. She said, "Honey, get up and eat!"

Li Yuzhu woke up her husband and then went to the yard to wash her face.

Li Yuzhu had just finished washing her face when Dong Qing came out of the room. Li Yuzhu changed the water in the basin for him, handed a towel to her husband, and said, "Go wash your face quickly."

After Li Yuzhu finished speaking, she turned and walked up to the main room. When she entered the main room, she saw the sumptuous meal on the dining table and said, "Wow, lunch is so lavish, Mother, aren't you going to have lunch?"

"This girl, can't you say something auspicious? What do you mean by not planning to live together? It's not easy for you guys driving cars. I just want to cook you something nice to eat. Sit down and eat!"

At this moment, Dongqing walked into the house and said, "Mom, life at home is not easy. Just filling our stomachs is enough. There's no need to make so many delicious things for us."

Sister-in-law Li Yuqiu said, "Brother-in-law, please sit down and eat. This is our mother's thoughtfulness."

Li Yuzhu took out three hundred yuan from her pocket and handed it to her mother, saying, "Mom, our family hasn't had an easy time either. Please accept this three hundred yuan."

"I can't accept this money. You all have it tough too. Please put it away." The mother said, pushing the money away.

Li Yuzhu lied and said, "This three hundred yuan is a payment waiver from the factory, please accept it."

"Alright, Mother accepts it. Please sit down and eat."

After lunch, the weather was particularly gloomy, as if it were about to seep water. Now that it's autumn, it's not as hot as it used to be. Dongqing said, "Yuzhu, let's go out and get there as soon as possible so we can get some sleep."

“Okay,” she said.

They went back to the bedroom and tidied up briefly. Li Yuzhu then carried a kettle and walked out the door with her husband.

When Dongqing arrived at the vehicle, he saw the canvas canopy covering it and asked, "Where did this canvas canopy come from?"

Li Yuzhu said, "Hurry up and get in the car! I asked the factory for these; the factory manager gave them to us."

"I feel relieved now that the canvas awning is there. I was really worried the goods would get wet in the rain." After getting on the truck, he asked, "Is the factory manager really willing to give up 300 yuan of the payment?"

Li Yuzhu said, "I lied to my mother, otherwise she wouldn't have accepted it. The factory manager only gave me 100 yuan off the payment."

Dong Qing said, "My wife is getting smarter and smarter. Things aren't easy for the family, so we should help each other out when necessary. They are your parents, and they are my parents too."

Li Yuzhu smiled and said, "You're right to think that way. As the saying goes, a son-in-law is like half a son. In my eyes, he's no different from a biological son. My parents raised me and then gave me to you without expecting anything in return. You should be grateful to have such a wonderful wife like me."

"Yes, I'm so glad I was able to marry such a wonderful and beautiful wife like you in this life." Dongqing paused for a moment and said, "I'll drive first, you can lie down in the back and take a nap."

Li Yuzhu said, "Okay, I'll take a nap first."

Although it was autumn, the car still felt stuffy. After Li Yuzhu finished speaking, she raised her hand and pushed open the sunroof, instantly letting in a wisp of cool air into the driver's cabin.

Dong Qing started the tractor. Li Yuzhu put the quilt to one side and lay half-reclined on the berth. After the tractor started, the wind blowing into the cab through the sunroof felt very comfortable, and she quickly fell asleep.

When she woke up, the driver's cab was pitch black, and it was already dark outside. Only the two beams of the headlights outside reflected a faint light into the cab.

Li Yuzhu raised her wrist and glanced at the luminous watch. It was already 8:30 PM. She sat up and said, "Honey, let's find a place to park and get some food?"

Dongqing said, "My wife is awake. Okay, let's go to the town ahead for dinner."
