Chapter 82 Playing Chess

After leaving the hospital, Wei Yuanxing drove directly back to the Wei family and came to the courtyard where Grandpa Wei lived.

From a distance, I saw Mr. Wei pruning potted plants in the garden.

"Grandpa!" Wei Yuanxing walked over quickly. Although Grandpa had retired, he still held a significant position in China.

Old Master Wei trimmed the irregularly grown branches and leaves, looked up at Wei Yuanxing, smiled and waved to him, "Come and see how this Podocarpus of mine is growing?" After he retired, apart from going out fishing and playing chess with a few old friends, he spent his time at home fiddling with the flowers and plants.

"Just like Grandpa, he's still going strong," Wei Yuanxing said with a smile. Most of the potted plants in the yard were brought from Grandpa's old house, some of which are even over a hundred years old.

Old Master Wei smiled heartily, "Come on, play a game of chess with grandpa." Among all his grandsons, his favorite is Yuan Xing. Yuan Xing looks unruly and a little sloppy, but only those who really understand him know that these are just appearances, just his disguise.

"Yes, sir!" Wei Yuanxing saluted cheekily.

"You little brat!" Old Master Wei laughed and hit Wei Yuanxing on the shoulder.

Arriving in the study, Wei Yuanxing placed the chessboard on the small coffee table and sat across from Old Man Wei. "Grandpa, if I win this game, will you promise me something?"

"What if I lose?" Old Master Wei picked up the tea, gently brushed away the tea foam floating on the surface with the tea lid, and looked at Wei Yuanxing with a sharp smile.

Wei Yuanxing laughed dryly and cleared his throat, "If I lose, I'll come back and play chess with grandpa as soon as I have a holiday." He felt like he couldn't breathe, feeling overwhelmed by the aura of superiority emanating from his grandfather.

"Then do as you say." Old Master Wei smiled and took a sip of tea. It was obvious that this kid was here for the quota.

Wei Yuanxing pulled up the corner of his mouth with a wry smile, reached out to pick up the chess piece from the chess box, glanced at the chessboard, and placed the chess piece on the chessboard. This game of chess was related to his future freedom, so he naturally had to play it seriously.

Seeing where Wei Yuanxing placed the chess piece, Old Man Wei nodded secretly and put down the chess piece in his hand.

Wei Yuanxing looked at Grandpa Wei's chess pieces, frowned, thought for a moment, and then put down his piece again. His grandfather had taught him how to play chess, and although he rarely beat him, he would try his best this time.

The two men went back and forth, and although the surface seemed calm, the chessboard was already turbulent and the fight had already begun.

Wei Yuanxing stared at the chessboard in front of him, his hand trembling slightly as he gripped the chess piece. This move was crucial; he had to be extremely cautious and absolutely couldn't let it go to waste.

After a long time, he took a deep breath and put down the chess piece in his hand.

"I lost. Tell me what's going on." Old Master Wei laughed and threw the chess piece back into the box. Although the game wasn't finished, the outcome was already decided.

"Grandpa, I want to give the two spots to Yihan and his fiancée," Wei Yuanxing said. Even if his grandfather would be unhappy, he would stick to his idea.

Old Man Wei put down his teacup and looked at Wei Yuanxing in confusion. "I understand giving Yihan a spot, but why give his fiancée a spot?" He had heard some stories about Zhan Yihan's fiancée today. While she was a nice girl, he didn't agree with the claim that she was exceptional. Any female soldier in the army would probably be able to defeat her.

Wei Yuanxing repeated what he had just said to Zhan Yihan and the others in the hospital, "Grandpa, Su Jinyue is really outstanding. If it weren't for her, the hospital might have been bombed." He really had a good impression of Su Jinyue, and was sincerely happy that Yihan could find such a fiancée.

Elder Wei pondered for a moment. "It's not impossible to give the spot to Su Jinyue, but Su Jinyue must accept a challenge, and only if she passes it will I agree." When he gave the token to Yuan Xing, he knew he would give one spot to Zhan Yihan. He just didn't expect him to give the other spot as well. This would definitely make the family members dissatisfied. He had to have a reason to go against the crowd.

Wei Yuanxing thought for a while and said, "I'll ask Su Jinyue tonight." He felt that Su Jinyue would definitely agree, but he still had to ask her opinion.

Su Jinyue and Zhan Yihan were taking a walk in the grove of the hospital when they met a nurse pushing an old woman in a wheelchair.

Zhan Yihan saw the old woman and a glint of respect flashed in his eyes. "She is Grandma Liu. She was originally a military doctor. During the war, her legs were blown off while she was trying to save others."

Su Jinyue nodded, looking at the old woman with eyes full of respect. In that war-torn era, countless revolutionary martyrs, fearless of life and death, sacrificed their young lives for the country. They truly deserve the respect and remembrance of their descendants.

"Xiao Zhan, this girl is your girlfriend, right?" Grandma Liu looked at Su Jinyue, then looked at Zhan Yihan and asked with a smile.

"Yes, Grandma Liu." Zhan Yihan nodded with a smile.

"Hello, Grandma Liu! I'm Su Jinyue, nice to meet you!" Su Jinyue greeted Grandma Liu with a faint smile.

Grandma Liu smiled and nodded to Su Jinyue, "You are so handsome, Xiao Zhan is so lucky." She liked the young man Zhan Yihan very much. He was brave and resourceful, and he would definitely be a talented general in the future.

"Grandma Liu, you're so kind!" Zhan Yihan said with a curled lip. Being with Jin Yue was truly the greatest blessing in his life.

"You guys go take a walk. I'm a little tired, so I'm going to go back and rest first," said Grandma Liu. As she's old, she feels a little tired after just a short walk.

Watching Grandma Liu and the nurse leave, Su Jinyue withdrew her gaze with some regret and sighed, "Grandma Liu's muscles have already died, and even treatment won't have much effect." She had just used X-ray vision to observe carefully and found that the muscles on Grandma Liu's legs had atrophied.

Zhan Yihan nodded and said solemnly, "Grandma Liu's husband was also a soldier, but he died in the war, so she has no children."

Su Jinyue felt a pang of pain in her nose, and she sniffed hard. "It would be so great if Grandma Liu's leg could be cured." If Grandma Liu's leg was healed, even if she still had no family by her side, she could go wherever she wanted. She wouldn't be confined to a wheelchair, pushed by a nurse like she was now. However, neither current nor future medical technology could rejuvenate necrotic muscles.
