Chapter 27

Chapter 27

The self-service porridge stall has been running for over a month and is finally closed. A notice has been posted under the banyan tree announcing that it is closed today.

Because the father of one of Su Yuanzheng's former co-workers passed away, and he had to attend the funeral.

Su Miao has been busy for most of the summer vacation, and today she can finally relax for a day. She has gone through all the elementary school books during this period, and is now reviewing the middle school knowledge.

After reading for two hours in the morning, Su Miao walked around the yard and rested his eyes.

The yard they live in is really big. The front yard is right after the gate. Two of the front houses facing the street have been connected to form a super large kitchen and a small utility room.

Coming in from the front yard is a transparent hall with large rooms on both sides, one for each of the father and daughter.

Across the hall is a spacious backyard. In addition to the old tree, their family has a vegetable garden and a small corner for raising chickens.

There are three slightly smaller old tiled houses in the backyard. One is a shower room, one is a chicken coop where the chickens are driven in at night, and the other is left empty and unused.

The empty room had become dilapidated as no one had moved in for a long time. It rained all night last night and rainwater leaked in through the gaps in the broken tiles.

Su Miao stood at the door of the house with nothing to do and looked around, thinking that he would ask his father to fix it up when he had time, either repair it or tear it down. It would be better than the dilapidated state it is now.

Suddenly, she found that a brick in the corner was cracked and half fell off, and there seemed to be something dark inside.

Su Miao walked over to find out what was going on. The room was full of mud, which was sticky when she stepped on it, and even her little flip-flops were dirty.

She squatted down to look at the broken red brick, and it fell off with a gentle push. Inside was a black mass of something unknown.

Su Miao rubbed it with his hands. It was soft and a little wet. He bravely pinched it and actually pinched off a piece.

The sticky feel made her hair stand on end and she immediately wiped her fingers on the wall.

She was so curious, how could there be such a thing in the red bricks? Did they cut corners when they built the house? It's impossible, isn't it the landlord's house?

He came out and found a stick, and dug out the black substance. As he dug, a golden color appeared from the wall.

Wow! Su Miao's heart was pounding faster and faster! The hand holding the stick felt a little weak.

Gold! Gold bars! Get rich!

Su Miao dug out a small gold bar about two centimeters wide and five centimeters long from the wall. The cold touch made her mind clear instantly.

The rotten stuff on the outside might be the cloth used to wrap the gold bars. The bricks on the outside were damaged and rainwater seeped into the walls, and after years of doing so, everything rotted away.

She looked inside through the hole she had dug out. There were still some tiles nearby, but they were not completely destroyed. It would take some effort to remove them.

It’s not easy for her to do it now that she is alone at home, so Su Miao decided to wait for her father to come back before continuing to dig.

She moved a broken table next to her to block the hole, ran back to the room, stuffed the gold bars she had taken out into the deepest part of the cabinet, and covered them with the thick quilt in the cabinet.

After making sure the courtyard gate was locked, he came in and closed the door to the hall, then took a book, moved a small stool, and sat on the porch in the backyard.

Just guarding her gold like this, I felt excited and nervous at the same time, and I couldn't concentrate on reading a single page of the book.

Su Yuanzheng returned home at four in the afternoon. When he entered, he saw that the door to the hall was closed. He thought his daughter was sleeping, so he didn't call her.

Unexpectedly, his daughter ran out of the house by herself, hurriedly locked the gate before he had time to close it, and pulled him to the backyard.

"Miao Miao? What happened?"

"Shh! Dad, be quiet, I found something good!"

Su Miao pulled his father into the shabby house, pushed aside the broken table, pointed at the small hole in the wall and whispered, "There are gold bars hidden in here!"

Su Yuanzheng was also shocked and looked outside subconsciously. This was a feudal remnant and could not be known to others!

"Miao Miao, you stay in the yard while Daddy gets the tools to chisel open the wall."

"Okay, Dad, be careful. This house is shaky and you'll get hurt if it collapses."

"Don't worry, Dad knows what's going on."

Su Yuanzheng dug carefully for almost an hour and finally took out all the gold bars inside. He put them in a small bamboo basket and then stuffed the red bricks back in.

The father and daughter carried the small bamboo basket back to the hall like thieves, locked all the doors and windows, and even pulled up the curtains before they dared to look at the gold bars.

Ten gold bars sparkled under the lamp, shocking the father and daughter so much that they were speechless for a long time.

Su Miao asked, "Dad, do you think this is real gold?"

Su Yuanzheng shook his head: "I don't know either. If I hadn't made gold earrings for your mother a few years ago, she would have never had the chance to touch gold in her entire life."

"How about we give it a try?"

Su Miao ran back to her room and took out a small magnet from her schoolbag. It was given to her by a classmate. They often played with it in the classroom after class.

I put the magnet close to the gold bar, but I didn't feel any attraction on my hand. So I just placed the magnet directly on it, turned the gold bar over, and the small magnet fell on the table.

"Dad, if the magnet can't stick to it, it proves it's not a magnetic metal like iron."

Su Yuanzheng picked up the gold bar, looked at it, and took a bite of it so fast that Su Miao couldn't stop him.

"Dad! I haven't washed it yet!"

"Hehehe! It's okay! Look at Dad's teeth marks, they're quite deep. I heard that even real gold can leave a mark."

Then they burned it with fire, but ordinary fire seemed to be of no use. Su Miao felt that this was most likely real gold, otherwise who would go to so much trouble to hide it so deep.

Su Yuanzheng took out a small scale and wanted to weigh the gold bars. When he touched one of them, he felt something was wrong. He turned it over and saw a small word "Li" engraved on it.

Seeing his father stunned, Su Miao asked, "What's wrong, Dad? Is the owner of these gold bars the landlord of this house?"

Su Yuanzheng nodded. "Look at this character. The original owner of this house was surnamed Li. Maybe it was hidden in the wall back then."

A small gold bar weighs two taels, and ten of them weigh two kilograms in total. This is not a small amount!

"Dad, do you know what the price of gold is now?"

"I don't know. How about I ask around tomorrow? But what should we do with these gold bars?"

Su Miao asked tentatively: "Dad, what do you think is the best way to deal with this?"

Su Yuanzheng said with a troubled look on his face: "Accordingly, this yard belongs to the country, and the things we dug up should be handed over...but..."

He considered himself a decent person, but this was two pounds of gold! He was not a saint, so it was impossible for him not to want to keep it for himself.

"Then if we buy the yard, shouldn't the gold be ours?"

Su Yuanzheng's eyes lit up when he heard his daughter's words: "Is... is this possible?"

Su Miao struck while the iron was hot and persuaded his father: "Of course, buying the yard includes this piece of land and the house. Since this is something inside the wall, it naturally counts as ours."

Su Yuanzheng nodded rapidly, thinking that his daughter's idea was very correct.

"Old Master Wang said before that my grandfather used to take care of the owner of this house. Maybe this is a blessing for our family. Besides, if we hand it over rashly, it might attract attention. Then everyone will know that there are gold bars in our yard, and everyone will want to come in and dig for them."

"Right, right, right! It will be troublesome if it attracts robbers and thieves! Miaomiao, let's go to the Real Estate Bureau tomorrow and ask about buying the yard!"
