Chapter 40

Chapter 40

The New Year’s Day party brought long-awaited liveliness to the usually quiet campus nights.

All the students from the six grades sat in front of the newly decorated big stage. It was a sea of black. The little students were very excited and there was laughter everywhere.

In order to prepare for the performance, Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan went to the mall together to pick out the same outfits.

A white long-sleeved shirt, a knee-length red and white plaid suspender skirt, paired with white lace stockings and black leather shoes.

Li Yuanyuan tied her hair into two thick braids, and Su Miao tied her thick hair up with a big bow.

Su Miao made the decision and did not paint her face white, lips red and blush like other students.

Both of them are very fair-skinned, so they only need to put on some foundation, draw their eyebrows more clearly, use blush to enhance their complexion, and put on a little lipstick to look delicate and beautiful. As for the red dot on their forehead, they are determined not to have it.

I would rather have my makeup eaten away by the light than be photographed and recorded as ugly in front of the camera.

The two people's performance was the eighth one. After signing in, they could return to their seats to watch the performance and wait until the fifth performance began.

Wang Xin and another boy had helped them move the chairs down, and they caused a burst of exclamations when they returned to the classroom.

"Wow! Miaomiao, Yuanyuan, you are so beautiful today!"

"Yeah! Didn't you ask the teacher to help with your makeup? I just saw Jiang Ling was made up like a big tabby cat."

Several girls came over to touch their suspender skirts.

"This dress is so beautiful, did you buy it together?"

Su Miao nodded: "Yes, Yuanyuan and I went to choose it together on the weekend."

Another classmate said, "It's so beautiful. I want one too."

Su Miao thought for a moment and said, "There should still be some in stock in the mall. If you like, you can buy it and we can wear it together when we take graduation photos."

The girls cheered, "Great! We'll wear the same clothes and ask the cameraman to take an extra picture for us."

A male classmate named Meng Zhiwei saw how happy the girls were and said, "My family has a camera. My dad said he would come take pictures of me when I graduate. I'll ask him to buy a few rolls of film so you can take as many pictures as you want."

"Really? You can't break your promise, okay?"

"Man up! Once you've spoken, you can't take it back. Just dress up!"

The students from the class next door heard the laughter and looked over, and they were a little envious when they saw Su Miao.

How come this classmate has everything: smart, pretty, can sing, and has good interpersonal relationships?

Only Ma Wenjie snorted disdainfully in the corner. What's so great about that? He's just a poor guy abandoned by his mother.

When they were about to go on stage, Su Miao held Yuanyuan's hand and found that her palms were a little sweaty. She turned around and asked with concern:

"Yuanyuan, are you nervous?"

Yuanyuan said stiffly, "I don't know why, but my heart started pounding right before I went on stage."

Su Miao comforted him, "It's okay, just do it as we usually practice."

Yuanyuan nodded heavily and said, "Okay! Miaomiao, you take me to order."

That night, Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan's performances were truly brilliant.

Later, with the influx of videos and audio-visuals, this song became widely sung in the Chinese community. By the 1990s, primary and secondary school teachers in mainland China often listed "Tomorrow Will Be Better" as the designated song for singing competitions.

Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan's program was successfully included in the competition list. The art competition will be held on Saturday, half a month after New Year's Day.

Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan went to school in the afternoon to gather with their teachers and classmates. After having dinner in the cafeteria, they walked to the theater.

The theater has been renovated, not only with new sound equipment, but also with new tables, chairs, and stage furnishings in the auditorium.

Su Miao looked at the huge curtain on the stage and suddenly felt a little nervous. Her experience on the big stage was limited to being in the university choir.

At that time, there were so many people that it didn't seem like a big deal, but now there were only her and Yuanyuan on such a big stage, and everyone's eyes were on them...

"Miao Miao! Look at this stage! It's so big! So beautiful, with so many lights. Miao Miao? What's wrong with you?"

"Yuanyuan, I think I might be starting to get nervous."

Li Yuanyuan said bluntly, "Oh my god, you can actually get nervous? If even you get nervous, everyone else will probably pee their pants!"

Li Yuanyuan's words made Su Miao laugh, and his nervous mood was relieved a lot.

The front row of the stage is reserved for the judges. Today the judges include leaders from the Education Bureau, the Arts Department, and the Youth League Committee.

The leaders had already taken their seats and were greeting each other. In front of each of them was a program and a score sheet. Su Miao saw from afar that Liu Xu was carrying a kettle and adding water to the leaders' teacups.

The second row is composed of leaders from participating schools, and further back are students and teachers who will be performing.

Every student who participates in the performance will receive two tickets so that their parents can come and watch their performance.

The remaining seats are for other people on a first-come, first-served basis. If you arrive late, there will be no seats and you can only stand at the back and in the aisles on both sides. When a certain number of people enter, the theater will no longer let anyone in to avoid accidents caused by too many people.

The chairs are connected in a row, and the seats are made of wooden boards that can be folded up automatically. The joints are made of iron, which gives them a particularly retro feel.

When you are sitting, remember not to put anything on it casually. If you forget to pick it up when you stand up, the thing will fall directly at the feet of the people in the back row. Many people have had their fingers pinched.

Su Miao gave the extra ticket to Wang Xin, who jumped up and down with joy. The parent ticket was in the middle section, and he said he wanted to borrow a camera to take pictures of them.

Su Miao didn't take it too seriously. In that era, cameras were such precious items. Not to mention that there were not many in a county, even if there were, a child would not be allowed to run around with one.

At 8 o'clock, the performance officially began. The hosts were two older brothers and sisters who they often saw on local TV stations. It seemed that the higher-ups attached great importance to this art competition.

"Dear leaders, distinguished guests, and audience friends, good evening!"

The host used the words in a proper manner to link up the competition, and Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan were taken backstage by the music teacher to change clothes.

There are two large rooms backstage, one for boys on the left and one for girls on the right, and each school has a set of makeup tables.

There was a lot of noise backstage at this time. Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan went behind the screen to change their clothes. Today's performance costumes and makeup were the same as those on the New Year's Eve party, simple and elegant.

Each school had five programs participating in the competition. In addition to the chorus performed by Su Miao and her classmates, No. 1 Primary School also had two group dances, a chorus and a poetry recitation.

After Su Miao and Li Yuanyuan finished dressing up, there was still a long time before they were supposed to go on stage, so they sat aside and watched the teacher put makeup on the students.

When Su Miao saw the teacher using lipstick to apply it to the center of the eyebrows of each student in the dance team, she couldn't help laughing out loud.

"Su Miao? What are you doing here?"

Su Miao turned around and saw Liu Zhaodi standing there angrily. She said helplessly, "Is this the only thing you can say to me every time you see me? Can't you just say something polite like hello?"

Liu Zhaodi only then saw her outfit clearly. She was stunned for a moment, a flicker of jealousy in her eyes: "Why are you painting your lips so red? Are you going to participate in the performance too?"

Su Miao said jokingly, "Can't I participate in the performance? Besides, my lips are just a little red, my face and forehead are not red."

Su Miao said jokingly as he looked at Liu Zhaodi's monkey-butt makeup, which was almost the same as that of other classmates.

"you……"

Just as Liu Zhaodi was about to say something, her eyes suddenly lit up and she shouted towards the door: "Auntie, I'm here!"
