"As a doctor, Dr. Li Zheng lacks ambition, indulges in alcohol and gambling, frequently absents from work without reason, and has committed multiple medical malpractice incidents within a year. He has seriously violated medical ethics and regulations, and despite repeated warnings, he has refused to change. The hospital committee has decided to terminate Dr. Li Zheng's position effective immediately!"
"Buzz!"
As soon as President Zhang Dehai finished speaking, a whisper was heard in the conference room, and many medical staff showed expressions of gloating on their faces.
Li Zheng was sitting in the first row, holding a pen tightly in his right hand, with the joints between his fingers slightly white.
"He deserves it! Dean Zhang has been putting up with him for a year and finally can't stand it anymore!"
"Hehe, if his dad wasn't a classmate of Dean Zhang, Dean Zhang wouldn't have taken him in!"
"That's right. He had a medical accident at the City First Hospital due to drinking, and his father flattered him and shoved him into our County Hospital. Now, look what happened, he still can't change his ways. The entire surgery department has been affected because of him."
"During his last appendectomy, the gauze was almost left in the patient's abdominal cavity. Fortunately, the instrument nurse checked it in time, otherwise, it would have been a serious medical accident."
"How can such a person be qualified to be a doctor? He should have been fired long ago!"
Listening to the various sarcastic remarks behind him, Li Zheng looked up at the banner on the podium, which read "Strive to create a high-level Class II A comprehensive hospital." Memories of his past life surged back like a tide.
The spotlights in the lecture hall of the Tokyo International Medical Summit, the applause at the Geneva Microsurgery Forum, the remote robotic heart transplant broadcast live worldwide by the Mayo Clinic... now overlap with the lime walls of the old hospital from the 1980s.
I used to be at the pinnacle of global surgery, enjoying immense glory. But when I woke up, I found my soul trapped in this young body, undergoing the most severe judgment. It felt a bit ironic.
"Li Zheng, do you have anything else to say?"
Dean Zhang Dehai, who was sitting on the rostrum, tapped the sandalwood cane in his hand hard, making a "dong dong" sound on the mottled concrete floor, and looked at Li Zheng with a look of disappointment.
Li Zheng had only been in charge of this body for less than one night. His white coat was wrinkled, and the collar was stained with dark yellow wine stains from last night's vomit. He looked decadent and had a foul odor, which made the surrounding medical staff try their best to stay away from him.
Li Zheng stood up and scanned the room. Those colleagues who had once called him brothers now avoided his gaze. The nurses who had once greeted him with flirtatious glances now turned their heads away.
"I have nothing to say."
Li Zheng shook his head, his face calm, and his mood gradually calmed down.
In this era, Li Zheng feels that as long as he is willing, he can make a career regardless of whether he is a doctor or not.
"You... okay!"
Dean Zhang Dehai looked like a deflated ball, his face a mixture of loss and relief. An old classmate had entrusted his son to him, only to have him expelled.
"Meeting adjourned!"
Dean Zhang snorted coldly, leaning on his sandalwood cane and limping towards the conference room door.
The crowd poured out of the conference room like a tide, and everyone stayed away from Li Zheng as if he were the plague, fearing that they would be affected by his bad luck.
Soon, the old conference room became empty.
Li Zheng turned around and prepared to leave.
Suddenly, a pair of white and delicate hands, holding a white printed enamel cup, were handed to Li Zheng.
"Doctor Li, don't lose heart. You...you are actually capable!"
Li Zheng turned his head and saw a girl with two pigtails in front of him. She was the nurse in his department.
Her voice was soft and she looked timid and shy.
"Lin Xiaomei, are you mentally ill? Why are you still paying attention to him?"
The head nurse of the surgical department poked her head out of the main door and continued to scold, "He's already so useless, and you still have feelings for him? Just give up immediately. There are so many young and promising doctors in the hospital, who isn't better than him?"
Lin Xiaomei's face turned red all of a sudden, but she still raised her head bravely, took out a White Rabbit milk candy from her pocket and handed it to Li Zheng.
"Doctor Li, I believe you can cheer up!"
Lin Xiaomei waved her little fist, her voice soft but firm!
Li Zheng took the White Rabbit cigarette somewhat woodenly, and looked at Lin Xiaomei's departing back, feeling a warm feeling in his heart.
"Silly girl!"
Li Zheng shook his head and smiled, revealing a row of white teeth.
In his previous life, in 1987, he was only 5 years old and had no deep memories of that era. Now, coming back to this era of simple emotions, it doesn’t seem like a bad thing.
After peeling the White Rabbit and putting it in his mouth, a sweet aroma spread in his mouth, and Li Zheng's mood also improved.
He smoothed the wrinkles of his white coat and walked out of the meeting room with brisk steps.
…
After packing his personal belongings into a white canvas bag, Li Zheng walked towards the hospital gate.
Along the way, the medical staff he met didn't even look at him. After he walked away, they looked at his back and pointed and talked.
In the early spring of 1987, Guang'an County was still wrapped in the spring chill, but wild flowers had already bloomed stubbornly at the base of the wall.
Dark clouds rolled in the sky, and dull spring thunder echoed in Li Zheng's ears.
Li Zheng turned around, glanced at the faded big red cross sign on the emergency building, and thought about his next plan.
"Bi Bu Bi Bu..."
The ambulance roared past him and stopped suddenly at the emergency room door.
The car door opened, the medical staff jumped out, and pulled a cart from the back of the car.
"Hurry! The patient is in critical condition!"
Several more medical staff rushed out of the emergency room.
"What's going on?"
The doctor on duty asked nervously.
"Falling from a height, open fracture of the left lower leg, possible organ rupture!"
