Before leaving get off work, Li Zheng came to the emergency duty room, took off his stethoscope, took off his white coat, and hung them on the hook behind the door.
Zhu Haiping sat on a chair in the duty room. On the table in front of him was an aluminum lunch box. The food inside was sticky and gave off a not very appealing smell.
Li Zheng stepped forward and patted Zhu Haiping on the shoulder: "Haiping, if there is an emergency, please call the staff apartment. I will not go out tonight."
The hospital had specially equipped the staff apartment with a landline phone, an antique rotary dial phone, which was kept by the dorm manager. On weekdays, whenever a call came in, as long as it wasn't too late, the dorm manager would yell downstairs to call for help.
Zhu Haiping nodded repeatedly and said vaguely: "Brother Zheng, rest assured. I won't disturb you with ordinary patients!"
After explaining the work, Li Zheng, Chen Dayong and Lin Xiaomei prepared to go to the cafeteria for dinner.
On the way to the cafeteria, Lin Xiaomei frowned slightly and muttered softly, "I'm tired of eating the cafeteria food every day. It doesn't taste that good."
As she spoke, her eyes rolled, as if she had come up with a good idea. She looked at Li Zheng and suggested, "How about we cook for ourselves? The vegetables at the vegetable market behind the dormitory building are quite fresh!"
Chen Dayong patted Li Zheng's shoulder with a smile on his face and said, "Xiaomei is worried about you and wants to improve your food!"
Lin Xiaomei's face suddenly turned red. Chen Dayong hit the nail on the head and she lowered her head in embarrassment.
Li Zheng smiled and said, "The food in the cafeteria is really bad. Okay, Xiaomei, let's cook it ourselves!"
Chen Dayong laughed heartily upon hearing this and said, "Xiaomei, you're the head chef tonight, but I also have my own specialties. I guarantee you'll want more!"
Lin Xiaomei blinked curiously and asked, "What kind of dish is it?"
"Stir-fried cabbage! Hahaha!" Chen Dayong laughed proudly.
Lin Xiaomei curled her lips in disdain and said, "I thought it was some kind of hard dish!"
Chen Dayong said seriously, "Xiaomei, the simpler the ingredients, the more difficult it is to prepare. For example, you have to fry a large cabbage until it is cooked through, retain a certain crispness, and also make it sweet and refreshing. So, this dish is not simple!"
Li Zheng listened, shook his head, and said with a smile on his face: "For your experience, I must try your cabbage today!"
Lin Xiaomei snorted and said, "You definitely can't make the kind of cabbage you're talking about!"
Chen Dayong turned to look at Li Zheng and said, "Brother, you... forget it. You've never cooked before, so you don't have any specialties."
Li Zheng laughed and said, "I really do have one!"
"What dish?" Chen Dayong and Lin Xiaomei asked at the same time, looking forward to his answer.
"Tomato and egg soup! Hahaha!" Li Zheng also laughed, his laughter full of confidence.
"Tsk!" Chen Dayong curled his lips and said, "It's not even as difficult as stir-frying Chinese cabbage!"
Lin Xiaomei shook her head and said, "It's not as simple as you think. This soup needs to retain the sweet and sour taste of the tomatoes, the fresh fragrance of the eggs, and a delicate texture. It's incredibly difficult to achieve all of these!"
Chen Dayong swallowed unconsciously, his stomach growling at the same time. He urged, "Stop talking, let's go quickly, I'm so hungry!"
The vegetable market behind the dormitory building wasn't big, but even though it was getting dark, it was still bustling. Many vendors had just put out a new batch of vegetables, as many county hospital employees only came to buy after work.
In the vegetable market, under the dim lights, people are busy and the air is filled with the faint smell of honeycomb coal smoke.
"Fresh cabbage, just pulled from the field!"
"Big radish, so juicy!"
"Big sister, the braised tofu is so tender!"
The shouts of the vegetable vendors rose one after another, mixed with the smell of honeycomb coal, interweaving in the air to form the urban atmosphere of this era.
Lin Xiaomei came to a meat stall. The stall owner, Old Sun, was smoking a Fengshou brand cigarette. When he saw Lin Xiaomei, he showed a warm smile on his face and joked, "Nurse Lin is here again to improve the food. I've left 30% fat and 70% lean meat from the front ribs for you!" As he spoke, he picked up the meat next to him and showed it to Lin Xiaomei.
Lin Xiaomei nodded, a sweet smile on her face, and said, "Uncle Sun, I'm going to treat them both to dinner tonight, please give me more!"
"Okay! These two strong guys are doctors from your hospital, right?" Old Sun asked while cutting meat.
Lin Xiaomei nodded and said, "Uncle Sun has good eyesight. They are my colleagues!"
Old Sun smiled complacently and said, "It's obvious they're not farmers, nor are they good at rough labor!"
Chen Dayong chuckled and said, "So we both live a life of luxury!"
Old Sun laughed heartily: "Doctors are great! Saving the dying and healing the wounded is a great virtue!"
As they chatted, Old Sun had already cut the meat and placed it on the beam scale. The weight was tilted high, but he didn't even bother to move it. Li Zheng watched from the side, nodding inwardly. This old man was a down-to-earth person.
"One pound and two ounces, is that enough for the three of you?" asked Old Sun.
"That's enough, Uncle Sun." Lin Xiaomei said, and was about to take money out of her small leather bag. As her hand reached into the bag, Li Zheng reached out to stop her, and had already prepared two yuan in his hand to hand to Old Sun.
Chen Dayong was quick to stuff the money into Old Sun's hand. As he stuffed the money into Old Sun's hand, he said, "I'm the richest here, so don't try to steal from me!"
Since Chen Dayong was paying, Li Zheng certainly wouldn't compete with him and stopped Lin Xiaomei who wanted to continue paying.
