Chapter Six: The Sky

Playing a tune is not difficult at all.

"I know a lot of things; I can do almost anything that's popular with the masses."

"I hope you're not bragging. Let me play you a tune first."

Liang Liang originally wanted to play a virtuoso piece by Kotaro Oshio, but then she thought that the people in the dance troupe wouldn't understand it, and they might even find it unpleasant to listen to. So she decided to play a pop song instead.

The song "Your Appearance" was released at the end of 1988 and was also used as the end theme song in the movie "The Story of Ah Lang". It was a relatively popular song at the time.

After recalling for a moment, Liang Liang began to play tentatively.

The original key of "Your Appearance" is D major, but Liang Liang played it in C major, which is a simplified version that omits the AM+9 melody in the interlude.

The musical notes flowed from Liang Liang's fingertips like a babbling brook, spreading outwards like a cool summer breeze.

It quickly attracted the attention of others.

The guitar is very attractive to girls. Liang Liang once thought that the person who invented the guitar did so to seduce women.

Within minutes, the girls from the song and dance troupe had gathered around Liang Liang and Ming Hongling.

Mu Shuihua, who was still applying paint to her face, naturally heard it too. She turned her head in surprise to look at Liang Liang, who was not far from her.

Although she couldn't play the guitar, she could listen to it and felt that Liang Liang played better than Li Hui, who used to be the top student in their class.

After the performance of "Your Appearance" ended, several girls clapped enthusiastically.

"You played really well, I think you played better than Li Hui."

"That's how I feel too."

"Hey bro! Come join our group, we're really short of guitarists right now."

The girls chattered amongst themselves.

Liang Liang sighed: "I asked your troupe leader, and he doesn't want it!"

"How could I not want it?"

Ming Hongling then spoke up: "It's a pity you can only play instruments, can you sing? Sing one! Sing a song that's a bit loud."

Ming Hongling's meaning was simple: she was singing for the troupe leader and his wife.

"What should I sing?" With so many colorful girls surrounding him, Liang Liang also felt like singing.

"Can you sing 'When Dreams Awaken'?" asked a girl named Lin Xiuxiang, who often sings this song during performances. She really wanted to hear what the male version of the song sounded like.

"Then let's sing 'When Dreams Awaken'."

Liang Liang took a deep breath and began to play the prelude.

When Liang Liang began playing "When Dreams Awaken" on his clapperboard, Lin Xiuxiang was dumbfounded. Was the key too high? Could he even sing it?

Liang Liang's rendition of "When Dreams Awaken" uses the singing style of Dick Cowboy from many years later, specifically the rock-influenced version in D major.

Unfortunately, without a pickup and distortion amplifier, no matter how you bend the strings, the acoustic guitar can't produce the sound of an electric guitar, which somewhat affects the overall effect of the song.

The female version of "When Dreams Awaken" is somewhat gentle, while the male version is more melancholic. Although Liang Liang looks eighteen years old, he is middle-aged at heart, which is why he can perfectly express this sense of vicissitude.

"You said you loved someone you shouldn't have, your heart is full of scars; you said you made a mistake you shouldn't have made, your heart is full of regret..."

His rendition of the verses was fairly standard, but it was noticeably different from the female version, giving the girls a refreshing experience.

Several girls stared intently as Liang Liang sang, and the rest of the song and dance troupe gathered around.

After the verse, Liang Liang shouted: "If you knew that heartbreak was inevitable, why did you roar with such deep affection?" The entire song and dance troupe was dumbfounded.

Ming Hongling was utterly shocked, feeling a jolt of electricity run from head to toe, and her blood began to surge.

Lim Soo-hyang shared the same feeling; she never imagined this song could be sung like this! She never imagined it could produce such an effect.

Mu Shuihua, who had been drawing for half an hour without finishing the face, was also stunned. As a mature woman, she was also shocked by the shout, and felt a certain string in her heart being plucked.

She quickly finished her makeup and came over to join the audience, watching Liang Liang sing intently until the song was over.

The girls applauded enthusiastically.

Mu Shuihua also clapped her hands.

"I never expected you to sing this song like this. I didn't realize you could not only play the guitar but also sing so well," Mu Shuihua said, still somewhat pleased with herself.

"Thank you for the compliment, boss lady. I knew I could sing well, but you said it's not a special talent."

What other songs can you sing?

"There are many, both those you've heard of and those you haven't."

"Sing a song I've never heard before, and if I think it's good, I'll keep you."

Singing a song that the troupe leader's wife has never heard before is not too difficult.

After a moment's thought, Liang Liang said, "Then I'll sing a song that not only you, but nobody else has ever heard before. The song is called 'Sky'."

The song "Sky" will be released next November, sung by Wang Fei, who was then known as Wang Jingwen.

This piece is hailed as a masterpiece of the Chinese music scene.

Liang Liang, being a man, certainly couldn't sing Wang Fei's light and ethereal style; he sang the rock version that Power Station performed on "I Am a Singer."

Of course, the part with the chanting singer in the intro was removed. He considered that the chanting singer, whose voice didn't match Power Station's at all, to be the biggest mistake in the song's adaptation.

"My sky, why is it filled with wet tears? Why is my sky always gray? Drifting on the other side of the world, letting loneliness invade again and again, the sky draws long lines of longing..."

Mu Shuihua was stunned by this sentence.

For a moment, she had the illusion of being back in her twenties. Under the drizzling rain, she stood beneath a small tree, gazing at the sky like a shy flower, her heart filled with longing for him far away...

Liang Liang was unaware that his song had stirred up a memory the landlady didn't want to recall, and he continued to revel in his own singing.

In his previous life, he was able to be the lead singer in a band, so his voice was naturally quite good.

Especially in the high notes, the highest note I've sung is G2, either in my true voice or semi-true voice.

Therefore, he was certainly able to sing the climax of the song that Power Station had adapted.

The climax of this version is those four consecutive rising tones in "My Sky".

Power Station can easily sing one line each as a group, but Liang Liang struggles to sing this part continuously by himself.

It wasn't that he couldn't sing the high notes, but he felt it wasn't worth the effort, so he took a shortcut and sang only three lines, omitting the last, most important line.

Even so, it still shocked the members of the song and dance troupe.

When Liang Liang finished the last sentence with a sweeping tone, the people around him applauded enthusiastically.

The girls clapped until their hands were red.

"Sister Shuihua! I think if Liang Liang joins our group, our group will definitely become a hit." Ming Hongling spoke up for Liang Liang at the right time.

Mu Shuihua did not answer Ming Hongling's question, but stared at Liang Liang.
