It was the first time for Chen Wang to eat dumplings stuffed with venison and green onions.
It tastes really good.
In addition to boiled dumplings, my wife also fried a large plate of them with lard, which was more flavorful and tasted better than boiled ones.
Chen Wang and the little girl both ate until their bellies were full, and they put down their chopsticks only when they couldn't eat any more.
After eating and resting for a while, we started preparing for the barbecue.
The first thing to do, of course, is to marinate the meat. Take some whole venison, mutton, and beef, cut them into small square pieces, then drizzle some cooking oil on them, sprinkle with salt, soy sauce, pepper, chili powder and other seasonings and marinate them.
After doing all this, Chen Wang asked the little girl to run and call his master and Chen Dazhuang over.
The little girl told him to wait until she came back to do it, and then ran out with the dog Ruyi.
Not long after, Chen Dazhuang came over with his master.
"Awang, how do you make that barbecue you mentioned? Let us help you."
When he arrived at the back room, Chen Dazhuang said with a smile.
"The meat is already marinated, my wife is preparing some vegetables, and now we have to set up the grill."
"Then tell me how to do it!"
"Brother Zhuang, go find some bricks first. Master, come with me to get some charcoal."
"Okay, no problem."
Chen Jianjun smiled and nodded.
"Then I'll go find some bricks."
Chen Dazhuang said this, then turned and left.
Chen Wang found a useless iron bucket at home, and then he and his master found some firewood of uniform thickness from the firewood pile.
There was not enough firewood at home, so Chen Jianjun went back to his own home and brought some firewood.
The two then chopped the firewood into pieces of appropriate size.
At this time, Chen Dazhuang also came back with a pile of bricks.
Chen Wang chose a place on the right side outside the door. He first paved the ground with a few bricks, and then placed the bricks horizontally in two rows, leaving a gap in the middle that was just big enough to hold the bamboo skewers.
In this way, a simple barbecue grill is ready.
Just pour the charcoal into the gap between two rows of bricks, and then you can grill the skewers on top of the bricks.
The next thing to do is to make charcoal.
Chen Wang instructed several people to stack the wood first, putting the large pieces in the middle, the smaller ones on the outside, and the finest wood and leaves on the outermost layer.
Finally, Chen Wang and Chen Dazhuang went to the river to get some mud and covered the pile of firewood with it to form a small mound of earth.
Cut out a few air intakes above and below.
Then place some flammable twigs in the top air inlet and light them with matches.
The flame immediately burned up and flowed downstream. When the flame reached the lower air inlet, it would be sealed, and finally the upper air inlet.
After it is completely closed, all that is left is to wait.
Chen Wang asked everyone to wash their hands and then help make skewers together.
No one knew how to do it, so Chen Wang demonstrated it.
Thread the marinated beef cubes onto the sharp end of the bamboo skewer, and string five pieces of meat on top of each other.
"Just like this. If you're making mutton skewers, use three lean pieces and two fat pieces. Same with the vegetables. Just skewer them."
Chen Wang said to everyone with a smile.
"Brother, I know what to do. It's easy."
The little girl started to yell first.
"I think I understand."
Chen Dazhuang nodded with a smile.
"Then let's get started. Let's get busy for the delicious skewers."
Chen Wang clapped his hands and shouted loudly.
Without saying a word, everyone immediately started taking action.
A few people were making skewers while chatting and laughing, and they were quite efficient.
In about an hour, a pot of various skewers was piled up.
There are quite a few vegetable skewers, including potato, green pepper, mushroom, and corn skewers.
Burning charcoal takes some time.
At noon, my wife used the leftover meat and vegetables to make a stew, and also served it with corn tortillas.
A few people gathered around the wood stove, eating corn tortillas and vegetables, and ate until they were full.
In the afternoon, the little girl squatted beside the simple charcoal kiln, waiting for the charcoal to burn. From time to time, she reached out to touch the soil on the surface, eager to cool down.
Chen Wang, Chen Dazhuang and his master sat at the door, eating melon seeds, chatting and laughing.
It was not until the evening that the little girl's cry was heard again.
"Brother, this time it's really better. If you don't believe me, come and touch it."
"Cold?"
Chen Wang looked at the little girl squatting there and confirmed with a smile.
"Uh-huh!"
The little girl nodded vigorously.
"Okay, let me take a look."
Chen Wang stood up and walked over, touched the surface of the charcoal kiln and felt that it was almost done, with only a little bit of residual heat left.
"Awang, what do you say?"
Chen Dazhuang also came over and asked impatiently.
"It should be ok, open it and take a look!"
Chen Wang nodded.
"Okay!"
Chen Dazhuang grinned, squatted down and dug up the pile of soil with his hands.
Inside was a pile of shiny black charcoal. Chen Wang squatted down, picked up a piece of charcoal and broke it. It made a crisp sound, indicating that it was good charcoal.
"Great, Zhuang Ge, take the charcoal over there, I'll get the meat, and the barbecue party is about to begin!"
Chen Wang stood up and said.
"Party?"
Chen Dazhuang looked at him in surprise.
"It means having a barbecue together, drinking together and having fun."
“Ohhh!”
"I want a soda!"
The little girl raised her arms and shouted loudly.
