Chapter 393: The Capital Before the Qing Dynasty

In the capital, at dusk, Old Mrs. Cheng came out of the post office with her aunt.

The aunt was unable to straighten her back due to the weight of the huge bundle of packages. After putting them on the back of the bicycle, she breathed a sigh of relief.

When she met acquaintances along the way, Mrs. Cheng was not in the mood to talk. She exchanged a few words and quickly followed the aunt. Looking at the package in the back seat of the car, she shook her head secretly.

When she got home, the aunt quickly refused the old lady's help, held her breath, and moved step by step to the living room.

Old Mrs. Cheng had been waiting there with a pair of scissors. As soon as the package landed, she rushed forward to open it. The smell of meat and seafood hit her nose.

The cloth bags inside were sewn with tiny stitches. If I hadn't smelled them, I wouldn't have known what they were. I also don't know how they were inspected before being sent. Judging by the old lady's observations, Zhou Jiao must have spent a lot of time sewing the bags at the post office.

She didn't open the bag, but after searching for a while, she found a letter inside.

Seeing the beautiful and familiar handwriting, Mrs. Cheng smiled and quickly opened the envelope. As she read the envelope for a long time, a bright smile gradually bloomed on her face.

"Madam, what did Jiaojiao say that makes you so happy? Didn't she ask Chief Zhou to bring it over some time ago? Why are you still sending it? It seems that the Northeast is really rich. There is no shortage of food now. It's really a good place."

The old lady laughed heartily. "There's no shortage of food. I saw this child send all the things from her godfather and relatives to the compound. She heard from Lin Lishan that her father had lost weight again, so she asked me to watch over her father while he ate and rested."

Auntie smiled and shook her head, "This father and daughter..."

"They have a good relationship, don't they? They just depend on each other."

The old lady folded the letter carefully, intending to let her nephew read it with his own eyes later. It wasn't her who was targeting the child, but Jiaojiao had asked her to target her nephew, so she had to obey.

"Madam, what should we do with the bags and things? Do we still need to move to the Zhou family?"

Old Mrs. Cheng shook her hand and leaned back with her eyes closed to rest.

Who is this child Zhou Jiao? Since she sent it to me, it means she is worried about Lin Lishan and the child. She is worried that all the things have gone to the Lin family. As an outsider, it is not easy for me to go to my nephew's house to check the warehouse. If I do that, what kind of person will I become?

However, I didn't grow up eating nothing. From my observation, Lin Lishan didn't have the courage to move her belongings to her parents' home. At most, she would bring a few things to visit Old Man Lin.

"Do you think Xiaozheng has lost weight recently?"

Auntie shook her head. "I don't feel thinner. Can't I notice it if I see you every day?"

The old lady burst out laughing when she heard this. "I'm old and my eyesight is blurry, but you're still young. Since you said you haven't lost weight, I'll write back to Jiaojiao and tell her dad is fine. Okay, let's stew a hen tonight and add a few slices of ginseng from last time, so Jiaojiao can rest assured."

Auntie nodded with a smile, "Then shall I move the package to the warehouse?"

"No need. I'll give it to Xiaozheng with the chicken soup tonight."

"Send them all over? There are the words Zhou and Cheng on the bag. I can tell at a glance that Jiaojiao should be separated."

Old Mrs. Cheng rolled her eyes at her. "The child should be taken out to be filial to her father. I don't lack food. Oh, I would have forgotten about it if you hadn't mentioned it. Let's open the bag and destroy the evidence."

My aunt didn't object. It would be a waste to tear it down anyway, so Zhou Xiaozheng would definitely keep half of it.

As the two began to act, dumplings, wild boar meat, venison, rabbit meat, old hens, tea leaves, and fried dried fish were taken out of the bag one after another.

Before she'd even opened a third of the box, the old lady took a breath and waved her hand, "Forget it, don't open it anymore. Let Xiaozheng do it himself. Did you notice? Apart from the fresh meat, everything else is pre-processed food. Jiaojiao is such a thoughtful child. She didn't want to bother us, so she prepared everything that can be eaten right away so her father can have whatever he wants."

Auntie nodded repeatedly. Strips of fragrant dried meat, strips of fried dried fish, stacks of frozen dumplings, and those braised pork wrapped in oil paper and fried peanuts, what a comprehensive selection!

The old lady looked at it and suddenly burst into laughter. If she refused now, the old man would probably be angry with her. Her husband kept talking about Jiaojiao every day, but he had been thinking about the child's craftsmanship for a long time.

The aunt suddenly found a package underneath, marked with 'Lin'. "Old lady, look, this is for the Lin family. Sigh...it's hard for Jiaojiao."

Mrs. Cheng nodded. It looked small, but it was still a normal-sized bag. Lin Lishan was a blessed woman, having a daughter who cared so deeply for her.

After a moment's thought, the old lady took out the letter again, looked at it, and said, "Forget it, give Ruzhu's package to her as well, otherwise Jiaojiao will be angry. This girl has a good relationship with her aunt. Just take half of what she gives us, and give the rest to Xiaozheng. Now, Xiaozheng will be very happy to eat the snacks prepared by his darling."

Auntie laughed out loud. Isn't it?

As Zhou Xiaozheng arrived home near the end of the day, he heard Aunt Chen smilingly say that Old Lady Cheng had asked them to come over. He learned that Lin Lishan had gone to the Cheng family's house, but he couldn't figure out why, assuming they were going to dinner. He washed his face and strolled over slowly.

Before reaching the living room, he heard the laughter of Mr. Cheng and Cheng Sijin from the living room in the yard. Zhou Xiaozheng curled his lips, it seemed that there was a big happy event.

"Xiao Zheng, come here quickly. I've already made a promise to you that you have to provide for me after I finish eating."

Zhou Xiaozheng glanced at the things on the coffee table and the floor. "Did Jiaojiao send this? Did your aunt send something again? Jiaojiao told you not to send anything again, fearing that it would have a bad influence."

Old Mrs. Cheng glanced at Lin Lishan, who was smiling. "I see. The child was worried that you were at work and didn't have time to pick up the package, so she sent it to me. Shanshan, your precious daughter's package for her grandfather is also here. You can deliver it to him later."

Zhou Xiaozheng's smile deepened when he heard this. Is Jiaojiao afraid that her mother will move the things back to her parents' home? This child doesn't even think about Aunt Chen being here, who would dare? As soon as the things entered the warehouse, Aunt Chen would seriously implement Jiaojiao's arrangements and would never let them be given away. Even to herself, she wouldn't agree. Jiaojiao kept saying this.

Lin Lishan followed the old lady's finger and saw a small package, and laughed out loud.

"What's wrong?"

Lin Lishan stopped laughing and lowered her voice, "Jiaojiao did it on purpose. Apart from her grandfather, she doesn't like anyone in my family. This child takes after me in this regard."

The old lady glanced at her nephew and said, "You are her mother. If not you, who else can she take after?"

"Honey, do you want to eat first? Seeing so many delicious foods, I'm getting drunk."

After hearing this, Mrs. Cheng quickly asked her aunt to prepare.

After dinner, Zhou Xiaozheng asked Lin Lishan to deliver the package to Old Man Lin first, while he took out a bag and packed all the cloth bags with the word "Zhou" on them. His daughter was always polite and considerate, so he could guess without the old lady's repeated explanation that the remaining part was Jiaojiao's gift to her great aunt's family.

Zhou Xiaozheng repeatedly refused the old lady's push, picked up his bag, and followed the old lady, who was carrying a pot of old hens, home. As they walked, he wondered if he should send a telegram to his daughter so she could feel at ease.
