After a bumpy ride, speeding through the darkness, we finally arrived at a military camp late at night. As we got out of the car, we could still faintly hear the howling of wolves, which more or less calmed the excited group.
The grassland was a bit chilly at night, so Zhou Jiao put on her coat and followed the others. Aside from a bonfire in the clearing ahead, there was no one around for ten miles, and the darkness was eerie.
The bumpy road and the swaying car made her feel like her bones were about to fall apart. She stretched her arms and legs and found a place near the fire to sit down.
She heard the soldiers inside calling for everyone to go in and rest. She checked the time and lay there without blinking. It turned out that it wasn't just them; many of their energetic companions were gathered around the campfire chatting.
After most of the sleepy people left, Zhang Guoqing and his friends soon ran inside to ask for some sweet potatoes and vegetables, and unexpectedly got a large piece of meat and a lot of meat bones.
Put an iron pot on the campfire, wash everything and throw it into the pot, then pour water into it and stew it.
Everyone chatted, their eyes reluctant to leave the large pot in the center. After waiting for the aroma to finally fill the air, everyone excitedly stood up and rushed forward. Before it had even cooked for a moment, only the bottom of the pot was left.
After drinking the scalding soup and eating a few bites of the meat and vegetables, fatigue suddenly overwhelmed them, and they each found a place to sleep next to their companions.
Zhang Guoqing nudged Yi Jiefang. This kid was the smartest one, he refused to sleep with the others in the courtyard and refused to budge.
Yi Jiefang glanced at the few people around him who were resting their eyes and whispered, "Everything is ready. He will go home at dawn."
Zhou Jiao looked at them knowingly and closed her eyes again.
If she was right, this guy must be a classmate from the same school, their guide this time. They heard it was best to wear the local robes here, otherwise they'd be mistaken for disaster victims and driven away. Even wearing a military uniform would still be rejected by the locals.
Zhou Jiao didn't care about any of this. She had a large bag with her gear in it. She was thinking about how to separate from the main group and move freely with her husband.
The sky was turning slightly brighter, and there was snoring all around. Zhang Guoqing opened his eyes and watched Fang Fei and his companions leave quietly. He smiled and patted Zhou Jiao who was sleeping next to him.
After a while, he quietly picked up his wife and walked out of the barracks. He waved to the surprised sentry and put Zhou Jiao down. If this girl didn't wake up, he would be mistaken for a human trafficker.
Zhou Jiao opened her eyes in a daze, but soon woke up. She smiled at others embarrassedly and pulled Zhang Guoqing out.
"It's dangerous outside, don't go too far."
Zhang Guoqing smiled and nodded, pointing to a small ditch not far ahead.
The gray mist was thick, and only he, with his excellent eyesight, could easily point it out. This reassured the sentry, who assumed the man had been there before and walked away unconcerned. Everyone was young once, and it was obvious these two were secretly dating, looking for a place to talk and romance.
After a short walk, Zhang Guoqing carried Zhou Jiao on his back and chased in the direction Fang Fei and the others had left. He figured they must have planned to abandon the students and go hunting on their own. If they stayed in the camp, they would definitely be assigned to chase pheasants nearby. There wouldn't be a single feather on the large animal.
He didn't follow closely, walking leisurely with his wife on his back, far behind them. Zhou Jiao on his back was holding a bag of stones and a medicine bag, eager to kill everyone immediately.
Gradually, as time passed, the sky began to turn white, the fog dissipated, and every scene and object of nature appeared before our eyes like a picture.
The couple sighed at the distant forests, the endless grasslands, and the small rivers, thinking that they had seen too little - this was just like what heaven on earth was like.
The sound of wooden cannons rang out in the distance, and Zhang Guoqing frowned slightly. In a place like this, one should use a bow and arrow, which is a respect for nature.
Then he laughed at himself. He was really stupid. Only when people have enough food and clothing can they have the leisure to have fun. If they are starving, who would give up the meat that will disappear in a blink of an eye?
"They've already taken action. We'll stay here first and join them later."
Zhou Jiao looked ahead in confusion and nodded. He wouldn't lie to her anyway. "You arrange it."
Zhang Guoqing took off his backpack and took out his robe. "Put it on first. When we meet someone later, you can talk to them."
"Look, you married the right wife, didn't you? Isn't she a language genius?"
Zhang Guoqing put on his clothes and looked at her with a smile. She was the only one whose words were powerful, but whose persona wasn't. She couldn't fake it. She looked frail, completely lacking the agility of the horsemen.
"Do you think I belong to the Zhenghong Banner or the Zhenghuang Banner?"
"Be careful or dad will beat you."
Zhou Jiao stuck out her tongue. "He really doesn't know how to play. He doesn't even know how to join in a joke."
"Master, get on my back and I'll take you on a gallop."
Zhou Jiao said with a stern face, "Little Wuzi, I leave my life and property in your hands. Protect me well. I will reward you handsomely when we return to the capital."
"Yes, Master, please mount your horse."
Zhou Jiao patted his butt mischievously, climbed onto his back quickly, and laughed.
"Master, I have a sincere heart for you. Let's elope."
"OK!"
Zhang Guoqing listened to her cheerful laughter and laughed along with her. His wife had been pent up in Beijing for a long time, and finally all his efforts were not in vain.
The couple found a nearby river and cast their nets several times. They caught enough fish and put the last bit of the catch into their space, intending to take it back with them to report.
Thanks to Zhang Guoqing's good hearing and eyesight, he was able to hit the target with every one of the two bags of hidden weapons - small stones.
Seeing the prey falling one after another, Zhou Jiao sighed repeatedly that he was really a natural hunter, and it would be a waste of resources if he didn't hunt.
No matter how fast the gazelle is, it can't be as fast as him throwing stones casually, and he even saves time on setting up the bow.
Zhou Jiao followed him cautiously, her eyes sparkling as she watched his movements. She considered whether she might try some practice with some rocks herself when she had some free time. Of course, she didn't dare to voice these thoughts out loud.
Her brain was working at high speed, calculating the strength and speed. If she practiced diligently, she should be able to hit those little pheasants in time, right?
Zhang Guoqing busied himself with work and looked regretfully toward the distant forest. If his wife weren't with him, he'd really like to go in and take a look. That's a treasure trove!
"We're not far from Fang Fei. Should we go find them?"
Zhou Jiao looked around curiously. Where was it? Where was the person?
Zhang Guoqing patted her forehead speechlessly. She actually dared to doubt his words.
"Let's go. We killed too many and don't have time to clean up. Let's go over there and take a look. I doubt they killed many." He was not bragging. If he didn't go, the wild animals those guys probably wouldn't be enough to fill their teeth.
Zhou Jiao pulled him back anxiously, "Let's clean up first, there's no place to wash when we get home."
Zhang Guoqing shook his head. "It's dangerous here. We can just go back and find a deserted mountain or wilderness."
Zhou Jiao nodded obediently, took out the fishing net and placed it on the ground.
"Forget it, put everything away. I'll carry you on my back. Just hurry up and catch up with them."
Zhou Jiao was silent for a moment. Was she being disliked? She glanced at him sideways and took out a new fishing net and put it in her backpack. She had to go fishing for this cold-water fish again. Her father loved eating fish.
