Before I had time to savor the spring, the breath of early summer hit me. It seemed that overnight, the jackets and light coats on campus disappeared in the blink of an eye. A casual glance saw the whole campus full of short-sleeved vests, and occasionally a few skirts swaying.
Early summer is finally here. Without the harsh cold of winter, and with the strong winds and dust of late spring gone, summer has quietly arrived.
Zhou Jiao finished her experiment and left with several female classmates. While joining in their conversation, she thought about rushing home to make two sets of shorts and shorts for her son.
"Jiaojiao, look ahead... It's a shame I haven't seen you wear a long skirt in the past two years."
Zhou Jiao followed the direction suggested by her classmates and saw four or five girls wearing bugis in front of her. She secretly rejoiced because it was getting colder at night and it was freezing cold.
"I'm planning on going to the department store tomorrow. Do you want to make one too?"
"I can't. I'll save some coupons for the children to make summer clothes." Zhou Jiao smiled and shook her head. She had stopped wearing skirts in public for the past two years, except for wearing them at home.
Avoid troubles that can be avoided. Since she started college, she and Zhang Guoqing haven't made new clothes. In the past two years, she has also been subtly changing her mother's dress style.
At the intersection, Zhou Jiao separated from everyone else and hurried back to the dormitory. Since the hot weather had arrived, the corridor had become much cleaner with fewer clothes hanging out to dry.
Zhang Zhiying came downstairs cheerfully, carrying an enamel washbasin. As soon as she saw Zhou Jiao, she quickly stepped forward and whispered, "They have an event today, so come early."
Zhou Jiao blinked in confusion, "What activity? If it's about stealing melons, I won't go. I can't run fast."
Zhang Zhiying hesitated for a moment, then shook his head and smiled, "Forget it, you should wait for us at the old place. Do Xiaowu and the others have anything else to do tonight?"
Zhou Jiao was confused and tilted her head hesitantly. "There shouldn't be any activities. I heard there was a meeting. Just after finishing the experiment, he and Dayi went to see our class counselor."
Zhang Zhiying smiled and shook her head, saying, "They're really busy. Those junior students wanted to go for a walk in the wild, and I was planning to ask the student union to help organize it. Forget it, let's talk about it later. It's my birthday next month, and you have to bring everyone from your college to my house."
Zhou Jiao nodded with a smile, but said, "No problem. I will definitely invite you. But I may have to go out with the professor and others next month, so we'll talk about it then."
Zhang Zhiying's face froze, and she smiled, "Okay. I'll go wash the clothes first. Do you have anything to change into? I'll help you wash them too."
"Not now, but I will definitely stay and wait for you later." After saying that, Zhou Jiao laughed.
Zhang Zhiying laughed along with her, waved to her and went downstairs.
What's so silly about this? She's such a fusser! She's meddling in her juniors and even trying to get involved in the student union. She's just as obsessed with power as her dad.
And what about Wang Huihui? Birds of a feather flock together.
Looking at her back, Zhou Jiao lowered her eyes, raised the corners of her lips in a knowing smile, and turned back to her room. It was so complicated outside, she wanted to go home to find her father.
Inside the room, Zhou Jiao sighed and froze for a moment. Then, she pulled herself together, took out a piece of yellow-green fabric, and began to make Ping An's shirt and shorts.
Less than half an hour later, someone downstairs was shouting Zhou Jiao.
Zhou Jiao put down the work in her hands, opened the window and looked out. She saw Joanna, who had just come back with her, and waved downstairs.
"Jiaojiao, go out with me."
Zhou Jiao gestured to her and said she would go down immediately. To be honest, she had never been able to shout loudly, so she envied her mother-in-law's loud voice.
After packing up her things, Zhou Jiao left a note, picked up her military bag and ran downstairs quickly, secretly preparing some bills in her pocket for future use.
Qiao Na stood in the shade of a tree, watching Zhou Jiao skipping over, laughing with joy. She still remembered that when she first met this girl at the beginning of the school year, she seemed very steady, but now that she was familiar with her, she realized that she was a wonderful person.
"Slow down. Come with me to the district, and I'll treat you to some noodles with soybean paste tonight."
Zhou Jiao nodded cheerfully and followed her. The two of them walked out quickly. "Are you going to buy some fabric? Didn't you just say you were going out tomorrow?"
"I'm so bored in the dorm. I think I should go buy it sooner rather than later. It would be so frustrating if it's out of stock."
Zhou Jiao laughed happily when she heard this. She thought the girl must be greedy for food.
"Did you leave a note for Zhang Guoqing?"
Zhou Jiao nodded.
Qiao Na patted her chest and said, "That's good. Do you remember Su Mu from my dormitory?"
Zhou Jiao nodded.
Joanna looked around with a sly look in her eyes, and even though no one was around, she lowered her voice and said, "She's been acting half-heartedly. I thought that was just her nature. She acted so arrogantly in the dormitory just now, and it scared me."
After she finished speaking, she chuckled when she saw Zhou Jiao looking confused.
"She was close to a boy in her class. We all knew about it, but no one exposed it. This time, the boy's family sent a package, and he gave Su Mu a bag of dried fruit. The upper bunk had an extra mouthful of plums, so I asked if it was from her in-laws. Su Mu immediately got angry. Oh my god, it was scary."
Zhou Jiao rolled her eyes at her, "I didn't know. She should be angry! She's not married yet, what's the point of having a husband? How will she live if the news gets out?"
"That's how it is. No one dared to persuade me, so I just ran away. Luckily, we're in school. If it were outside, this would have become a reality.
During the Chinese New Year, my aunt told me about a girl at her workplace who was very pretty but had a rough personality. One day, she was rushing out of the door after work and bumped into an older man who was about ten years her senior. They both fell to the ground and couldn't get up. The rumor spread like wildfire. They said they had been having an affair, something that wasn't true. The girl broke off the engagement and actually married the man. So, you still have to be careful about what you say.
Zhou Jiao agreed. With society like this, one really needs to be more careful about what they say.
"Do you know what He Benshan's father in our class does?"
Zhou Jiao shook her head. She never asked about these things. She only knew that he was from the south.
Joanna looked at her with disdain, "How stupid. I guess everyone knows except you."
Zhou Jiao looked at her speechlessly, "Do you feel a sense of accomplishment in defeating me?"
Qiao Na laughed heartily. "Right! I rarely see you like this. Did you notice the imported watch on He Benshan's wrist? And the sneakers he's wearing?"
Zhou Jiao didn't want to talk to her, so she couldn't have fun.
"Forget it, I'll tell you. His father is a sailor. He's the only son in his family, and he has two younger sisters. I was wondering why I never saw him lose weight in the past two years."
Well, now Zhou Jiao understood. After saying so much, what she envied most was that they had enough food.
"I say you're pretty close. Didn't your brother just send you a package? Why are you envious of him?"
Qiao Na sighed and said sadly, "My eldest brother is getting married, so this treatment will be gone. Why would he marry so early? Really. I wanted to introduce my sisters to him."
As they got closer, more people started to walk by. Qiao Na started to keep quiet, which made Zhou Jiao laugh to herself. These days, there really is no Xiaobai anymore.
