Chapter 47 Eating White Rice

Actually, these grains have been stored in the space for some time.

The village's grain distribution hadn't started yet, and Fang Min and her daughter were living at home. The sudden appearance of this grain in their home was inexplicable.

In the past, there were more vegetables, such as corn and peaches, which was easy to explain.

She was afraid that Fang Min would go out and talk nonsense, causing trouble for the family.

However, Fang Min was lazy and not very bright; all she knew was how to eat. She had lived in Songjiatun for so long without suspecting anything.

The cellar at home wasn't very big; when six baskets of grain were put inside, there was barely any room to walk.

Fang Jie was already planning in her mind how to deal with the food.

Immediately, he grabbed a basin, filled it with soybeans, and soaked them in water, preparing to make soy milk for the children the next morning.

That evening, Song Fanxing entered her spatial dimension and planted the saplings she had dug up on the mountain that day into the peach grove. She had cut down half of the peach trees, leaving a large open space, and finally watered them with spiritual spring water.

The radishes and cabbages in the field are ready to eat.

Song Fanxing casually pulled up two radishes, plump and white. She also pulled up a large cabbage, which was tightly wrapped.

The next morning, Fang Jie got up earlier than usual; it was still pitch black outside.

She lit the kerosene lamp and went to the kitchen, but tripped over it.

Looking down for a closer look, I saw a large Chinese cabbage and two white radishes. They were quite big, with the radishes weighing about three or four pounds each and the Chinese cabbage weighing about ten pounds.

Without a doubt, it must have been planted in the daughter's space again.

The cabbages and radishes in her vegetable garden have just started to sprout.

Now we don't have to worry about food at home.

With grain, vegetables, eggs, and soybeans, we can take the soybeans to the oil mill to press some soybean oil, and then we'll have oil to cook with at home.

The only thing missing is meat.

The pig in the pigsty has to be handed over at the end of the year, and there will be no meat for the family to eat.

Next year, she plans to raise two pigs; one will be handed over to the government, and the other she'll slaughter and eat at the end of the year. After all, they have more vegetables and grain than they can eat.

Fang Jie picked up the two large radishes and the cabbage and put them into the abandoned water tank.

Then I started washing up and making breakfast.

I steamed a pot of sweet potatoes and added seven eggs. These sweet potatoes were from my daughter's space; they were so sweet they were practically dripping with oil. The eggs were also laid by chickens from my daughter's space.

The two sons have big appetites and eat two, while the daughter has a small appetite and eats one. She eats one and sends one to her mother-in-law.

By the time it was almost steamed, it was nearly dawn.

She blew out the kerosene lamp and took the soybeans to the yard to grind them into soybean milk.

He scooped two basins of water to clean the stone mill, placed a bucket underneath to catch the water, and then began scooping soybeans into the top round hole.

Just as they were about to start grinding, Song Yaohui came out.

"Mom, let me help you."

"OK."

Next, Fang Jie added beans to the stone mill, and Song Yaohui ground them.

Soon after, white foam began to flow out.

There was only one bowl of beans, and it was ground up very quickly.

Fang Jie put the sweet potatoes and eggs into a basin and covered it with a lid to keep them warm.

Wash the pot clean, pour in the raw soy milk, and Song Yaohui adds firewood.

Soon the soy milk was ready. Fang Jie ladled the soy milk into the white gauze cloth that had been placed there beforehand, shook it back and forth, and finally squeezed out the remaining soy milk by hand after removing the soy pulp.

Pour the soy milk back into the pot and bring it to a boil again.

A pot of fragrant soy milk is ready, but unfortunately there's no sugar. It would taste even better with some sugar.

Song Yaohui couldn't wait to take a bite.

It tastes so good, even without added sugar.

The family enjoyed their breakfast immensely.

After the people finish eating, it's the livestock's turn.

Fang Jie instructed her eldest son to deliver food to her mother-in-law, while she chopped up an old pumpkin and some sweet potato vines, mixing them with some bean dregs. The pig ate it with great relish. The pumpkin and beans were grown in her space and were particularly appealing; the pig loved them.

Fang Jie then ladled out a small bowl of soybean dregs and fed it to the two chickens.

Grandma Song never expected to be able to drink soy milk again, and thought to herself that her eldest son's family was living a very comfortable life.

After finishing half a bowl of soy milk, she was still not satisfied; she had never tasted soy milk so delicious in her life.

The eldest daughter-in-law is so stingy; she only brought her half a bowl, which wasn't enough for her.

Fang Jie did it on purpose, afraid that if she drank too much, she would urinate too much.

After feeding Fang Jie, Song Yaohui returned home and helped her husk the rice.

Fang Jie locked the gate, and the family busied themselves in the yard. Song Yaohua and Song Fanxing also joined in.

Song Yaohua poured rice into the stone mortar, Song Yaohui pounded it, and Fang Jie poured the pounded rice and husk mixture into a winnowing fan to separate the rice from the husk.

Song Fanxing placed a short basket under each of the two openings, with rice coming out of the smaller opening and chaff coming out of the larger opening.

Looking at the white, translucent rice, the family was filled with enthusiasm.

They hulled two large baskets of rice in one go.

In the end, we got more than a basket of white rice.

Fang Jie dumped the rice husks directly into the cesspool to destroy the evidence.

When food was scarce, people fed their pigs with rice husks. Now their pigs have plenty to eat and don't need to eat things that don't make them grow fat.

Fang Jie loudly announced that dinner would be white rice.

The three children were overjoyed.

Song Fanxing had been here for several months and hadn't eaten a single meal of white rice. She had been missing it for a long time.

The family worked so hard they didn't have time for lunch, and now they're starving.

Fang Jie asked her eldest son to start the fire while she washed the rice.

Soon, a pot of fragrant firewood-cooked rice was ready.

Fang Jie reheated the leftover rabbit meat from yesterday and stewed it with potatoes and cabbage.

The family then began to eat dinner.

After being heated, the rabbit meat becomes even more flavorful. Paired with a bite of rice cooked over a wood fire, the taste is absolutely divine; nothing could be more delicious than this.

Moreover, rice grown in this space is more fragrant; it's delicious even without vegetables.
