Chapter 62 Arriving at the Door and Getting Beaten

Finally, Song Yaohui used a bamboo pole to chase away Old Lady Song and the others.

Grandma Song and her family got nothing to eat and ended up with a belly full of cold air; they were extremely depressed.

Two days later, Fang Jie carried twenty eggs to the supply and marketing cooperative in the county town.

"Comrade, do you buy eggs? Our eggs are very good."

The woman selling the eggs looked at Fang Jie's eggs and her eyes lit up.

Fang Jie's eggs are large, beautiful, and uniform in size.

He then said, "Wait here, I'll go get our leader."

A middle-aged man came out shortly after.

He picked up Fang Jie's egg, examined it carefully, and nodded in satisfaction.

"Did your chicken lay these?"

Fang Jie: "Yes."

How many?

"Quite a lot, about 30 a day."

"Okay, we'll take your eggs. I'll give you five cents each, and we'll deliver them every seven days. How does that sound?"

Fang Jie said excitedly, "Okay, no problem."

She hadn't expected the supply and marketing cooperative to offer such a high price. On the way here, she thought she'd be lucky to get 3 or 4 cents each. Now, at 5 cents each, she could sell them for the same price on the black market without having to sneak around.

There's nothing you can't do, it's great!

The man then said, "How much do you have at home? Send some over tomorrow."

“My family has 200 now.”

The man was overjoyed. Eggs from the supply and marketing cooperative were a hot-selling item, and they were always in short supply. He was just worried about finding a source of supply. He never expected that Fang Jie would deliver eggs to his door, and of such excellent quality at that.

The man was certain that the eggs would be snapped up.

He immediately said, "Great! Send all 200 eggs tomorrow."

"Okay, okay, I'll come first thing tomorrow morning."

Fang Jie was very good at handling things; when she left, she gave the man the 20 eggs she had brought with her.

"Please try my eggs first; they are of absolutely the best quality."

The man accepted it with satisfaction, and his impression of Fang Jie improved considerably.

On the way back, Fang Jie's smile never faded.

As soon as she got home, she told her three children the good news.

The three children cheered happily.

Song Fanxing was genuinely happy; her family was getting better step by step.

The next morning, Fang Jie carried 200 eggs to the county town.

When the middle-aged man saw her go, he happily called over the women selling her goods to take Fang Jie's basket.

"Your eggs are so delicious! My two kids are fighting over them and saying they haven't had enough."

While wiping her sweat, Fang Jie smiled and said, "My eggs are really delicious and healthy, so feel free to let the kids eat them."

Several women counted the eggs and moved them into their baskets.

"Boss, there are exactly 200, and not a single one is broken."

The man grew increasingly fond of Fang Jie's meticulousness; she had carried the eggs for such a long distance without breaking a single one.

He readily handed Fang Jie 10 yuan.

Fang Jie was extremely excited as she held the huge sum of money in her hands.

Although it's not as much as going to the black market each time, it's a fixed amount. I can deliver at least 4 times a month. After deducting food expenses for my family, I can deliver about 200 items each time, earning 10 yuan each time. That's 40 yuan a month and 480 yuan a year.

She calculated it in her mind over and over again, and each time she did, she was so excited she wanted to shout it out.

"Auntie?"

Suddenly, a voice interrupted her.

Fang Jie looked toward the source of the sound and saw Fang Min and her niece Ye Fangxuan.

Fang Min still resented Fang Jie for kicking them out, and didn't give Fang Jie a friendly look.

He slapped Ye Fangxuan and yelled, "Who's your aunt? She's not your aunt, don't call her that."

Then he dragged Ye Fangxuan away.

Fang Jie shook her head helplessly, feeling a little sad, but she never expected her younger sister to be grateful.

When Fang Jie got home, she put the 10 yuan she had earned together with the money she had earned before.

That evening, Song Fanxing was planting various things in her space when she suddenly heard rustling sounds coming from outside the courtyard.

She quickly exited the space and woke up her mother and two brothers.

Upon hearing that someone might break into the house, Fang Jie was startled awake, quickly put on her clothes, and went out.

She cleverly didn't light the kerosene lamp, but instead took a hoe from the doorway by the moonlight and carried it in her hand.

Song Yaohui and Song Yaohua also got up from the kang (a heated brick bed), put on their clothes, and took brooms and bamboo poles in their hands. Song Fanxing picked up a wooden stick that was as thick as her arm.

Outside the courtyard, Song Dalong was half-squatting on the ground, and Song Haitao climbed onto his shoulders and stood on them.

"Dad, you can stand up now."

Song Dalong slowly stood up.

"Dad, a little higher."

"I can't go any higher, your dad is only this tall."

Song Haitao pursed his lips and tried to grab onto the top of the wall.

After a lot of effort, I finally climbed onto the top of the wall.

"Dad, I'm up here. Give me another push, and I can climb over."

Song Dalong grabbed his foot and pushed him up, and Song Haitao fell in with a thud, landing on the ground and crying out in pain.

When he got up, four figures stood in front of him, each holding a weapon.

He screamed in fright.

What are you trying to do?

Apart from Fang Jie, Song Yaohui and the other two gave Song Haitao a good beating, making him cry for his parents.

"Dad! Mom! Grandma! Help me!"

Song Yaohui and Song Yaohua still remembered the incident where Song Haitao pushed their sister into the river, and this time they seized the opportunity to beat him to a pulp.

Song Fanxing stopped after hitting him a few times, afraid that she might hit him too hard and accidentally kill him.

Hearing his son crying outside, Song Dalong frantically pounded on the courtyard gate.

"Haitao! Eldest son! What's wrong?"

His response was Song Haitao's heart-wrenching sobs.

Fang Jie, seeing that it was about time, called for her two sons to stop.

"Throw him out."

Song Yaohui and Song Yaohua helped Song Haitao, who was struggling to get up, to his feet. Song Fanxing opened the courtyard gate, and just as Song Dalong was about to rush in, a body was thrown on him. Before he could react, he was pinned to the ground.

By the time he got up, the courtyard gate was already closed.

The person pressing down on him was Song Haitao.

Song Haitao burst into tears, “Dad…they hit me, it hurts so much…I’m going to die…”

Song Dalong was furious, but dared not make a sound. After all, what they were doing was dishonorable, and if someone heard about it, they wouldn't be able to stay in the village. If Fang Jie made a fuss, they could even be arrested and imprisoned.

Song Dalong quickly carried Song Haitao home.

Fang Jie never expected Song Dalong's family to do such a thing; they must have been starving.

Lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), he thought about bringing a dog home to raise tomorrow. If his daughter hadn't woken them up tonight, Song Dalong and his son might have succeeded.

The next morning, before the family was even awake, the gate to the courtyard was pounded on again.

Song Yaohua rubbed his eyes. "Who is it?"

Song Fanxing snapped out of her daze and guessed who it was.

Fang Jie knew who it was; besides her mother-in-law and Song Dalong's family, who else could it be?

Outside the door, Old Lady Song stood with her hands on her hips and roared, "Fang Jie! You come out here! How dare you! Look what you've done to my grandson! You vicious woman, get out here!"
