Chapter 200 Dare to Make a Bet

In his eyes, this was the consequence of not listening to his advice, and it wasn't his responsibility anyway.

"Waaaaah—! Lao Sheng! I'm so sorry, Lao Sheng!"

Upon hearing the words "prepare for the funeral," Sheng's wife felt as if her last bit of strength had been drained away. Her legs went weak, and she collapsed onto the cold ground with a thud. She covered her face with her hands and let out a heart-wrenching cry, completely overwhelmed by regret and despair.

It's all her fault; she's the one who ruined Shengxu.

In the emergency room, all that could be heard for a moment were Sheng's wife's desperate cries and the sharp alarms of the medical equipment, a sign that death was imminent.

Sudden--

"Beep...beep...beep..."

The urgent, piercing alarm, without any warning, actually... stopped?!

Although the regular "beep beep" sound was still there, the frantic alarm that indicated danger had disappeared!

The crying stopped abruptly.

Everyone was stunned, looking at each other with confusion and bewilderment on their faces.

What happened? It's not making a sound?

The wife, who had been slumped on the ground, suddenly raised her head and looked at the machine with teary eyes. Like a drowning person grasping at a last straw, she looked at the doctor with a hoarse voice and a trembling hope.

"Doctor...doctor...is...is there any hope for my husband, Lao Sheng?!"

The attending physician frowned, staring intently at the screen, his face still bearing an expression of disbelief.

He instinctively shook his head: "Impossible! Absolutely impossible! How could things have recovered from that situation? It's most likely... the equipment malfunctioned! Yes! The machine must be broken!"

After all, he had never seen such a sudden resurrection.

As he spoke, he strode forward and began checking the instrument's wiring and connectors, muttering to himself, "I knew it! These domestically made instruments are no good; they always fail at crucial moments..."

However, after checking, the wiring was found to be intact and the indicator lights were working properly.

He stared incredulously at the vital signs on the screen, which were slowly but steadily recovering, and froze as if petrified.

It's not...it's not broken?!

The data... the data is improving?!

How...how is this possible? Drinking water...actually made me feel better?!

"Doctor! What's wrong?! Tell me quickly!" Yuan Guoyao was anxious, and the others urged him on as well.

The attending physician's expression was extremely complex, a mixture of shock, bewilderment, shame, and an undisguised horror.

He swallowed hard and spoke with difficulty, his voice hoarse.

"His...his...vital signs are indeed...slowly recovering...his heart rate and blood pressure...have stabilized somewhat...but...but he is far from out of danger! His condition remains extremely critical!"

The entire emergency room fell into a deathly silence once again!

But this time, it wasn't despair, but utter shock!

"Drinking water...does it really help?!"

"That Xu Kuo... he was right?!"

"Amazing! Absolutely amazing!"

"Quick! Go find Xu Kuo!"

Yuen Kwok-Yau was the first to react and made a decisive decision!

"Yes! Only he can save Captain Sheng!"

"Go to the police station right now! Bring him back! No! Beg him to come back!"

"Hurry, hurry, hurry! It'll be too late if we're too late!" Everyone chimed in, their faces filled with anxiety and regret.

Now, Xu Kuo has become the only hope!

Without saying a word, Yuen Kwok-yiu turned around and rushed out, followed immediately by several quick-thinking police officers.

...

Meanwhile, at the county public security bureau, there was a dark and damp temporary detention cell with only a small window, commonly known as the "little black room".

Xu Kuo leaned against the cold wall, closed his eyes to rest, and his face was calm.

Zhou Changke and Jiang Xiuying, who was also involved, seemed somewhat anxious.

"Squeak—" The iron gate was pushed open, and a police officer in uniform walked over. It was the same officer who had been beaten earlier—Old Wu.

He walked in carrying an enamel mug and placed it heavily on the small table in front of Xu Kuo, splashing water everywhere.

Old Wu glanced at Xu Kuo with undisguised disdain and malice.

"Kid, thirsty? Want some water? Don't even think about it. Stay put! If anything happens to Captain Sheng when we get news from the hospital, hmph! I'll skin you alive!"

Xu Kuo slowly opened his eyes, his gaze cold and clear. He didn't even look at the cup of water, but his eyes were full of amusement.

"Oh? Waiting for news? I advise you to let me out right now, otherwise, what you get may not be good news."

In Xu Kuo's view, those so-called doctors were a bunch of fools who really thought that quacks could save people.

Sheng Xu's situation is probably in jeopardy again.

"Let you out?!"

Old Wu sneered, stepped forward, pointed at Xu Kuo's nose, and spat everywhere.

"Are you out of your mind?! Assaulting a police officer! Obstructing official business! And possibly attempted murder! You're the most dangerous person right now! And you dare threaten me?!"

He slammed his hand on the table and growled menacingly.

"Let me tell you, you idiot! Forget about it! Without Director Yuan's and the orders from above, nobody's going to let you out! You can just wait to rot in jail!"

Xu Kuo listened to Old Wu's vicious threat, but instead of being afraid, he found it somewhat amusing.

Does this guy still not understand the situation?

No one but him could save Sheng Xu's life.

A hint of mockery flashed across Xu Kuo's eyes as he lazily raised his eyelids.

"Hey, this... Comrade Wu, right?" Xu Kuo's voice carried an unusual calmness, even a hint of nonchalance. "Since we're just killing time anyway, how about we make a bet?"

"A bet?!" Old Wu frowned, scrutinizing Xu Kuo warily, as if trying to see through his intentions. "Kid, what trick are you up to now?!"

“Nothing fancy.” Xu Kuo shrugged, his expression as relaxed as if he were having a casual chat. “I’m betting… that in a little while, you will personally and respectfully invite me out of this door.”

"Pfft—hahahahaha!" Old Wu clutched his stomach and burst into laughter, tears welling up in his eyes.

"You want me to get out?! Kid! I think you've really been beaten senseless! Still being respectful? I want to pin you to the ground and beat you up again right now! What the hell are you daydreaming about?! Absolutely not!"

Has Xu Kuo lost his mind?

When Director Yuan arrives, let's see how he dies!

Xu Kuo's smile deepened, tinged with provocation: "What? Afraid to gamble?"

"Honey! Stop talking!"

Jiang Xiuying, who had been anxiously watching from the side, hurriedly tugged at Xu Kuo's sleeve, her voice trembling with tears.

"Don't argue with him! Let's... let's just wait..."

The others also looked worried, fearing that Xu Kuo would further anger this seemingly fierce-looking police officer.

Xu Kuo turned around and gave Jiang Xiuying and the others a reassuring look, his words full of confidence.

"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."

He's bound to win this bet.
