Chapter Four: A Good Wife at Home, Even Goji Berries Can't Cure Her.

When Jiang Xiuying was put down, she kept her head down and dared not look at anyone.

Xu Kuo then felt a little embarrassed and cleared his throat, saying, "Well... I'm going out for a bit, to go up the mountain and see if I can find some wild vegetables or something."

"Okay, then go and come back soon."

Jiang Xiuying instinctively gave a word of advice.

What was originally just a simple expression of concern has now taken on a more ambiguous meaning.

Finally, too embarrassed to admit it, she simply crawled into the kitchen.

Watching that shy, fleeing figure, Xu Kuo was momentarily distracted and began to eagerly anticipate the arrival of the night.

He finally understood the words from his past life.

A good wife is a blessing, but even goji berries can't cure her!

I wonder if the Dragon Essence and Tiger Might Pill the system gave me will be enough to withstand it!

And so, Xu Kuo hummed a little tune as he left the house and headed straight for the back mountain.

At the beginning of the famine, wild mushrooms and vegetables were an essential food source for almost every household. However, by 1961, even these mountain foods were included in the commune's plans.

This kind of precious food is so rare that even if you want to eat it, you might not be able to get it. Only members with excellent qualities are qualified to go to areas where mushrooms and wild vegetables are plentiful. People like Jiang Xiuya are even forbidden from getting close to them, and they are not even allowed to go to remote and scarce areas.

My mother, Ren Hongmei, used to go.

But since she went to the team today, the task naturally fell to Xu Kuo.

But now that we have a system, why bother eating wild vegetables and mushrooms?

Of course!

Even so, it was still necessary to put on a show, so Xu Kuo spent more than half an hour to reach the hillside where there were many wild vegetables.

It's said to be quite a lot, but you can only catch a glimpse of one or two occasionally when you glance at them.

These days, with everyone searching for them, there are even fewer left!

Even so, when Xu Kuo arrived, he still saw several villagers, which clearly meant that he wasn't the only one who would come to such a nice place.

"Isn't that the third son of the Xu family?"

"Yes! He can get out of bed now?"

"How dare he even show his face here?"

As soon as Xu Kuo rounded a row of mud embankments with ropes strung together, he saw several villagers whispering among themselves, pointing and whispering in his direction from time to time, their faces flashing with disgust and aversion.

Finally, someone stepped forward and blocked their way: "Stop! You can't come any closer!"

"On what grounds?"

Xu Kuo frowned. He recognized the man in front of him as his neighbor, Hu Dahai, the butcher from the team. After the communal dining system was disbanded, he lived a frugal life, but it was still much better than that of the other commune members.

"Why should I? Your wife is a reactionary remnant, so you are a reactionary relative. Before we draw a clear line, you have no right to be here according to the rules. What, you disagree?"

Hu Dahai smiled sneer, which drew nods of agreement from many people around him.

"That's right! Get out of here!"

"Don't add to the bad luck here. Instead of wasting your time, you should get a divorce from that jinx in your family!"

Xu Kuo laughed in anger; these people had never treated him this way before.

To put it simply, Xu Kuo's grandfather joined the Red Army in 1931, switched to the Eighth Route Army in 1937, and crossed the Yalu River with his father in 1951. In the end, both father and son died on the battlefield, sacrificing their lives heroically.

In terms of lineage, the Xu family's offspring are all exceptionally talented and influential!

This is why, despite being sickly and rarely participating in labor, Xu Kuo still received support from the team.

But now, because of Jiang Xiuying's incident, these people's attitudes have changed completely.

It's all about treating people differently based on their status; it's pretty much the same across all eras.

If this matter only concerned himself, Xu Kuo wouldn't have cared. After all, it was his family's honor, and he wouldn't be so shameless as to take credit for it. But now it was about his wife! Xu Kuo couldn't stand it.

And then the next second.

"You're talking nonsense!"

Thud—

A heavy uppercut landed directly on Hu Dahai's chin.

Middle-aged people are in good health and can fall asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow.

Everyone was stunned!

That was Hu Dahai, a burly man whose physique was unmatched in the entire village, yet he was knocked down with a single punch.

Even more outrageous is that the one who did the beating was the sickly Xu Kuo.

This scene shocked everyone so much that their mouths dropped open. When did this kid become so fierce?

"You...you fucking dare to hit someone?"

After that punch, Hu Dahai's vision went black, and he shook his head and roared angrily.

"If you keep barking like a dog, I'll kick you, you believe it!"

Xu Kuo glanced at them, then looked at the group and sneered, "Come on! Who just said my wife is a reactionary remnant? How come the county leaders haven't even investigated this properly, and you've already sentenced her? If you're so powerful, why don't you become the leader? You dare to throw mud at people without any basis. Do you know what that's called? That's called slandering the family of a martyr!"

"Let me tell you! I'm here today, and if anyone's not happy about it, let's go to the county and settle this. Anyone who backs down is a son of a bitch! Who's up to this!"

With one shout, the surrounding area instantly fell silent.

Everyone in the team knows the Xu family's social standing. Even the team leader has to give that old lady some respect.

It's one thing for these people to talk about ostracizing the Xu family in private, but who would dare to actually be the first to cause trouble?

Winning a fight doesn't bring any good results, while losing a fight is a huge problem, and you might even end up getting yourself involved.

For a moment, no one dared to speak.

"A bunch of spineless cowards!"

"All you do is gossip? If you're spineless, shut the hell up and talk behind my back. If I find out who's spewing filth and stirring up trouble everywhere, we'll give them a try!"
