"Our village chief is bribing the villagers in an attempt to cheat in the election!" Xu Kuo exclaimed indignantly.
"What?! Such a thing has happened!" Upon hearing this, Secretary Chen flew into a rage. "Come on, let's go see!"
Secretary Chen immediately gathered several staff members and, following Xu Kuo, went straight to the village chief's house.
The group arrived at the village chief's house and quietly blended into the crowd.
At that moment, the village chief was standing in the courtyard, delivering a passionate speech: "Fellow villagers! If you elect me as your village chief, I guarantee that every household will receive grain coupons and meat coupons! Let everyone live a good life!"
"good!"
"Long live the village chief!"
The villagers were moved by the bright prospects described by the village chief, and they cheered and shouted their support.
"Shut up, all of you!"
Just then, Xu Kuo suddenly roared, like a thunderclap from a clear sky, making everyone's eardrums buzz.
All eyes were on Xu Kuo.
Upon seeing Xu Kuo, the village chief's face turned deathly pale, and his heart skipped a beat.
"Xu...Xu Kuo, you...how did you get here?" the village chief stammered, trying to remain calm.
"You... what are you doing here?" The village chief's eyes darted around, his heart pounding with guilt. He wondered to himself, was this Xu guy here to cause trouble? But he hadn't offended him; he'd been avoiding him lately!
"The village chief's question is absolutely laughable! You're openly bribing the villagers here, so as a member of this village, it's only natural that I come to uphold justice!"
Upon hearing this, the village chief felt somewhat relieved. So that's what it was about! He feigned composure, raised his head, and adopted a "what can you do to me?" attitude.
"Upholding justice? Bah! Who do you think you are? You're just a little brat who hasn't even grown his first hair, and you dare to boss me around? Let me tell you, after the election, I'll still be the village chief! You'll be sorry then!"
The village chief sneered inwardly. Trying to fight me? You're still too green! Once I've secured my position as village chief, the first thing I'll do is kick you out of the village, leave you to wander the streets, and turn you into a homeless dog!
Just as the village chief was getting carried away with his pride, a commotion broke out in the crowd. Secretary Chen, along with several staff members, parted the crowd and slowly walked to Xu Kuo's side.
"This is……?"
"Xu Kuo brought so many people with him, is he trying to cause trouble?"
"This is going to be interesting!"
The villagers whispered amongst themselves, speculating about the purpose of Xu Kuo's arrival with his men.
Upon seeing this, the village chief was startled, and a sense of foreboding welled up in his heart.
He suppressed his unease and threatened Xu Kuo: "Xu Kuo, I'm warning you, don't do anything reckless! Let me tell you, there are security guards patrolling around here. If you dare to talk nonsense, you'll regret it!"
Xu Kuo glanced at the village chief and said, "You're completely finished."
"Hahahaha!" The village chief laughed loudly, "You? You're hilarious! I'd like to see how you're going to finish me off!" He sneered inwardly.
"Comrades, this is my identification." Secretary Chen took out his identification from his pocket and showed it to everyone. His tone was serious. "I am Secretary Chen of the town committee. I have just received a report that someone is engaging in bribery during the election, which is a serious violation of election regulations. I will thoroughly investigate this matter and will not tolerate it!"
The villagers looked at each other, heads bowed in shame, wishing they could disappear into the ground. They never imagined they had become tools for the village chief's bribery, and that they would be caught so quickly.
The village chief's legs went weak, and he almost collapsed to the ground. He never expected that Secretary Chen would actually come in person! It's all over, all over! His voice trembled, "Secretary Chen... Secretary Chen, please let me explain, it's not what you think..."
Secretary Chen interrupted the village chief: "Explain? What's there to explain? The facts are clear, there's no room for your sophistry! Men, take him away!"
"Innocent! I'm innocent!" the village chief roared hoarsely, struggling desperately, but was held down firmly by the staff. "Xu Kuo! You treacherous villain! You framed me! I'll haunt you even as a ghost!"
The village chief was taken away, leaving behind a group of villagers looking at each other in bewilderment.
Xu Kuo surveyed his surroundings, his gaze piercing. He rebuked them with a pained expression: "Look at you all, each and every one of you! You're all like weather vanes, always switching sides! Who was it that swore to work with me and change the face of the village? And now? For a few grain coupons and meat coupons, you've sold your consciences? I wanted to lead everyone to prosperity, but now I'm utterly disappointed in you!"
"Tch, all talk and no action!"
"Exactly, if you didn't have the antidote, who would choose you?"
"Stop pretending to be a big shot!"
Several villagers, enraged by Xu Kuo's words, couldn't help but retort. They were indignant; if Xu Kuo hadn't possessed the antidote, who would have paid him any attention?
Xu Kuo sneered, "Short-sighted! You think this is all? Let me tell you, after a great disaster comes a great plague, and after a great plague comes a great famine! Then you will know what true despair is!"
"Pah! Stop trying to scare people!"
"Exactly, do you think you're a god? Can you predict the future?"
"Don't listen to his nonsense, he's just trying to scare us into electing him as village chief!"
The villagers didn't believe Xu Kuo at all, and they all scoffed at him, thinking that Xu Kuo was exaggerating.
Xu Kuo was too lazy to waste any more words with these people. He took a deep breath and asked loudly, "Is there anyone else who wants to come with me? If so, step forward now!"
A moment of silence fell over the crowd, and then a few people slowly emerged. These were the villagers who had seen Xu Kuo building the brick house and who had some trust in him.
"You...you're all insane!"
"What's the point of following him? You'll just starve!"
"A bunch of idiots!"
When some people stood up to support Xu Kuo, the other villagers mocked them, thinking they were incredibly foolish.
Xu Kuo ignored their sarcasm and left without looking back.
"Erbao, Tanwang, come here for a moment." Xu Kuo called Niu Erbao and Tanwang over.
"Master, what are your orders?" Niu Erbao asked respectfully.
"Brother Xu, you say so, and I guarantee I'll complete the mission!" Tan Wang patted his chest and assured him.
"You guys, go and level all the idle land in the village, and prepare to plant vegetables," Xu Kuo instructed.
"Growing vegetables?" The group looked at each other, somewhat puzzled. "Brother Xu, we usually grow vegetables too, but the harvest... is really not good!"
Xu Kuo smiled slightly: "Don't worry, this time is different. You go and prepare the seedlings and the land first, and leave the rest to me."
Although the group had their doubts, they still did as Xu Kuo instructed.
