Chapter Ninety-Nine: High-Price Vegetable Purchase

Seeing this, Xu Kuo was furious. He was afraid that his mother, Ren Hongmei, would worry about the discord among the three of them, which was why he deliberately did not accept the vegetables from Xu Jianguo and Xu Jianjun.

Unexpectedly, these two people were vying to let me harvest the crops, and I couldn't persuade them otherwise.

Left with no other choice, Xu Kuo had to accept the vegetables from the two men.

Seeing this, the two were delighted and scolded Xu Kuo for a long time before leaving.

After seeing off his two greedy brothers, Xu Kuo breathed a sigh of relief and began to plan his next move.

Now that the village's vegetables have been mostly harvested, the next target is naturally the vendors in the market. He needs to monopolize all the vegetables in the market to completely control the situation.

Early the next morning, Xu Kuo, along with Niu Erbao and Tan Wang, arrived at the vegetable market. They set up their stall in the most prominent position at the market entrance.

"Hey, isn't this Mr. Xu? What brings you to our little town today?" A sarcastic voice broke the market's tranquility.

The other vendors joined in the laughter, their eyes filled with mockery and contempt as they looked at Xu Kuo. They had long disliked Xu Kuo; how could a country bumpkin like him dare to compete with them for business?

Xu Kuo stopped and gave the crowd a cold look.

"I'm here today to bring you money."

"Give money?"

The vendors were taken aback for a moment, then burst into even louder laughter.

"Hahaha, Xu Kuo, have you lost your mind?"

"I think he's gone mad."

"You'd be so kind as to offer us money? That's hilarious!"

The vendors mocked him relentlessly, not believing a word Xu Kuo said.

"What, you don't believe me?" Xu Kuo wasn't angry. He took out a wad of cash from his pocket and waved it in front of everyone. "See this? This is all real money! As long as you sell me the vegetables, I'll pay you right away!"

Upon seeing the thick wad of cash, the vendors' smiles froze, their eyes gleaming with greed. Though they mocked Xu Kuo, they knew better than anyone that he certainly had a considerable amount of money.

"Boss Xu, you...you really want to buy our vegetables?" a vendor asked cautiously.

"Of course it's true," Xu Kuo said firmly. "The price will be guaranteed to be higher than what you sell it for yourself!"

These words completely shattered the vendors' defenses. They exchanged glances, their minds racing. Rather than let their vegetables rot, they figured they might as well sell them to Xu Kuo; at least they could make some money.

"Boss Xu, you're such a kind person!" One of the vendors was the first to change his expression, walking up to Xu Kuo with a big smile. "I'll sell all my vegetables to you, you have to give me a good price!"

"And mine too! I'll sell you my vegetables too!"

"Mr. Xu, you're truly our lucky charm!"

With the first person taking the lead, the other vendors also changed their attitude, vying to push their vegetables in front of Xu Kuo, afraid that they would not be able to sell them if they were late.

In just two hours, Xu Kuo had bought out every last vegetable in the market. The vendors left with their money, beaming with joy, not forgetting to mock Xu Kuo as they went: "That fool! He spent so much money on a bunch of vegetables, he's incredibly stupid!"

Shi Jixing was in an exceptionally good mood today. As the deputy secretary in charge of the vegetable market, he could extract a considerable amount of money from each vendor.

Today, Xu Kuo bought all the vegetables from the market, and his income increased accordingly. He sat in his office, sipping his tea contentedly, pondering how to spend the money.

As he calculated, he mocked Xu Kuo, "Is this kid an idiot? Buying those things at such high prices, he's insane! Hahaha, he's practically handing me money!"

Niu Erbao and Tan Wang stood behind Xu Kuo, looking at the mountain of vegetables before them, filled with doubt. These vegetables weren't even as good as the ones Xu Kuo grew himself; wasn't it a huge waste to spend so much money buying them?

"Master, why are we collecting these vegetables?" Niu Erbao couldn't help but ask.

“Yeah, Brother Xu, do you have some other plans?” Tan Wang chimed in.

Xu Kuo smiled mysteriously: "Just wait and see, it won't be long before they regret it."

Niu Erbao and Tan Wang exchanged a glance, both seeing confusion in each other's eyes. They simply couldn't understand what kind of magic Xu Kuo possessed to turn these vegetables into treasures.

These past few days, besides tending to the farmland and fishponds, Xu Kuo has been busy harvesting vegetables. The villagers, seeing him hauling cartloads of vegetables to the warehouse all day, all thought he must be crazy.

"Has Xu Kuo lost his mind?"

"You're right! Spending so much money on a bunch of vegetable leaves, what a spendthrift!"

"Just wait and see, he'll squander his entire fortune sooner or later!"

The villagers gossiped behind his back, all waiting to see Xu Kuo make a fool of himself.

Just then, the government suddenly released a message saying that a cure had been found for the previously reported infectious disease, and that it would be distributed free of charge to all residents. This news caused an uproar throughout the village.

"Thank you to the government! Thank you to the country!"

"We're saved!"

"The government is so great!"

The villagers spread the news with joy and excitement, their gratitude towards the government overflowing.

The villagers who had previously asked Xu Kuo for medicine now seemed to have changed their tune. Instead of thanking him, they began to complain about him.

"Xu Kuo is heartless. We begged him for some medicine before, but he refused no matter what. Now the government is distributing it for free. Humph, I definitely won't elect him as the village chief."

"Exactly! I think he's deliberately trying to make us look foolish!"

"This kind of person should be kicked out of the village!"

Even worse, some people went directly to Xu Kuo's doorstep, threw rotten eggs at his door, and cursed, "Xu Kuo, you black-hearted bastard, you'll die a horrible death!"

Faced with the villagers' accusations and insults, Xu Kuo offered no explanation. He simply endured it all silently, waiting for the right opportunity to arise.

Soon, the infectious disease was effectively controlled, and people's lives gradually returned to normal.

That day, Xu Kuo came to the farmland and, seeing the mountains of vegetables piled up in front of him, told Niu Erbao and the others to stop harvesting.

"Master, what's wrong?" Niu Erbao asked, puzzled.

“Yeah, Brother Xu, isn’t it time to harvest the vegetables now?” Tan Wang asked, puzzled.

Xu Kuo's lips curled up slightly.

"It's time to sell these vegetables."

"Sell them?" Everyone looked at each other, thinking that Xu Kuo was talking nonsense. "These vegetables may look good, but who would buy them? There are too many of them."

"Yeah, Brother Xu, these vegetables don't even look as good as the ones we grow ourselves, we just can't sell them!"
