In the kitchen, Mo Yutong placed the plate of meat buns on top of the enamel pot where eggs were being boiled in water and steamed them.
After a minute or two, she lifted the lid of the pot and shouted outside the kitchen, "Brother Li, you can turn down the heat!"
"Yeah!" Yan Mingli, who had been paying attention to the kitchen, immediately walked in when he heard the little girl's shout.
Seeing that the little girl was trying but still didn't dare to reach out to take the plate from the pot, Yan Mingli stretched out his hands and prepared to reach into the pot.
"Be careful, it's hot." Mo Yutong hurriedly grabbed his arm and scolded him.
The water in the pot is still boiling! No need to worry about getting hurt.
"My hands are very rough, don't be afraid." Looking at the little girl hugging his arms, Yan Mingli's brows softened and he couldn't help lowering his voice.
There wasn't much water in the pot, barely covering half of the enamel pot. How could it possibly scald him? The little girl was just too nervous.
Otherwise, how could she dare to reach out to pick up the plate? She! She was just too concerned!
Thinking of this, the tenderness between Yan Mingli's eyes and brows became even more intense.
But when the little girl grabbed his hand, the tenderness that was about to overflow was replaced by surprise.
"Brother Li's hands are not rough at all. They are very warm and safe." Mo Yutong would not allow him to say that about her. Even though his hands were a little rough from years of hard work, she still liked them.
"I'll cool it down first." The little girl's straightforward words made his cheeks hot, and his heart seemed to be coated with a layer of sweet syrup, which flowed and soon covered his entire heart.
"Okay!" Mo Yutong reluctantly let go of his hand and watched him squatting in front of the stove with his eyes lowered, removing firewood.
The young man at this moment was extremely gentle, and his drooping eyelashes were so beautiful that every blink seemed to blow a warm breeze into her heart, shaking the thriving water plants in the lake of her heart.
After turning off the stove fire, Yan Mingli stood up and took the plate to the stove. But where did she get this plate of buns from?
He didn't see it when he was cleaning the kitchen yesterday, and was wondering where the buns in the wicker basket had gone.
But he didn't ask yesterday, and he wouldn't ask today. Even though he had a lot of doubts in his heart, he didn't dare to say a word.
"Scoop out two eggs first, and simmer the other three." Mo Yutong took out a brand new bowl from the cupboard and handed it to him.
"Hmm!" Why not scoop it out together? Yan Mingli had a vague guess in his heart, but he couldn't believe how the little girl knew his preferences.
"These two boiled eggs are specially cooked for you. They are half-cooked soft-boiled eggs." The little girl's words confirmed his guess. Yan Mingli's hand holding the bowl shook slightly uncontrollably.
"Thank you!" He didn't dare to say too much, but just looked at his little girl with soft eyes, and the warmth in his eyes was so strong that it seemed to melt her.
"Bring breakfast out and bring in the thermos. I'll be there in a moment." Turning to look at him, Mo Yutong couldn't help but feel her cheeks burning.
Why did the boy's eyes suddenly become so fiery? She was so scared that she almost bit her tongue.
"Yeah." Yan Mingli responded softly, picked up the plates and bowls, picked up the thermos, and led his younger brother and sister into the bedroom.
Mo Yutong put the remaining three eggs in a bowl, took four pairs of bowls and chopsticks and a wooden spoon, and walked out of the kitchen.
The dishes had already been laid out in the bedroom, and the two children were sitting obediently at both ends of the bench, waiting for her to start eating.
Seeing her come in, Yan Mingli hurriedly took the empty bowl from her hand and listened to her instructions: "Put it on the small table. I'll go get the malted milk."
He took out a tinplate can and handed it to Yan Mingli to open it. Then he scooped two spoonfuls into each bowl and poured hot water to brew it.
Instantly, the rich aroma of wheat and milk filled the entire room, making the two little ones so greedy that they kept looking at the small table.
Mo Yutong was afraid that the two children would get burned, so she stirred the malted milk with a spoon until it was completely melted and the temperature was adjusted, then she picked up half a bowl of malted milk and handed it to them.
"Be careful, it's hot, drink slowly." The little girl's gentleness is like the warm sunshine on the face in winter, melting the thin snow in the children's hearts.
"Thank you, sister!" The two children's sweet voices in unison made Mo Yutong's eyebrows bend again and again.
"Here you go!" Yan Mingli picked up the bowl with more malted milk and handed it to her.
"Brother Li, eat quickly!" Mo Yutong was not polite and took the bowl and sat on the low square stool.
She had to eat quickly as she had to go to the village entrance to meet up with Liao Zhiqing and the others.
Everyone was very full after the meal. Yan Mingxue even burped twice loudly, and then looked at Mo Yutong eagerly.
"Xue'er, wait. I'll go get half a tub of hot water." Mo Yutong originally wanted to clean up the dishes, but was stopped by Yan Mingli. "Mingcheng and I will take care of these. You go get the water. Be careful of the burns!"
"Okay!" Mo Yutong happily brought a half-empty enamel tub of hot water from the kitchen into the bedroom, then bolted the door and said, "Xue'er, take off your skirt and lie down in bed."
"Okay, sister!" Yan Mingxue untied her shoelaces, took off her skirt, and slipped into the bed.
Mo Yutong spread the skirt flat on the small table, then pressed the hem of the skirt with an enamel pot and slowly ironed it along the fabric.
"Xue'er, you can't use this method for the time being. It will burn your hands, okay?" Mo Yutong said carefully while ironing the skirt.
"Sister, I understand!" Yan Mingxue poked her little head out from under the quilt and nodded vigorously.
"It's okay!" Mo Yutong lifted her skirt, shook it, and then laid it flat on the edge of the bed.
Yan Mingxue happily got out of bed and put on her skirt not very neatly, while Mo Yutong stood by and looked at her gently, without any intention of helping.
Children need a learning process. Adults can only lead them but cannot help them walk.
"Sister has to go to the commune to do some work this morning and can't take you with her. Can you play at home?" Mo Yutong opened the wooden cabinet and took out a sailor shirt and navy blue overalls to put on.
"Sister, my second brother and I often stay at home, we can do it." Yan Mingxue sat on the edge of the bed and said while putting on her shoes.
"Sister, try to come back before noon." Mo Yutong took out two tin frogs that she bought at the department store yesterday from the cabinet and handed one to her.
"Thank you, sister, it's so beautiful!" When she saw this cute toy yesterday, she loved it very much.
But the eldest brother taught them not to ask for things casually, so even if she liked something very much, she would not ask her sister for it.
"This is for Chengcheng." Opening the bedroom door, Mo Yutong looked at the small figure standing by the door and placed the iron frog in his palm.
"Thank you, sister!" Yan Mingcheng carefully held the first toy in his life, with crystal tears gleaming at the corners of his eyes.
Suddenly, he felt a gentle touch on his head, like the mother in his dream. He looked up and saw the best sister in the world.
