The soft laughter echoed softly in the boy's ears, accompanied by the unique warmth of the early autumn day in Chongqing, and gradually fell into every heavy grain of rice.
Working in the fields in the afternoon was much more difficult than in the morning. After a few cuts with the knife, sweat would flow from the tip of my nose all the way to the ground.
The little girl sat in the shade of the tree, feeling a dull pain in her lower abdomen. She was so uncomfortable that she didn't want to go anywhere.
"Sister, does your stomach hurt?" Yan Mingcheng asked worriedly after seeing her cover her stomach for the third time.
"Shh! Don't disturb your brother, I'm fine." It was the last bit of work, and there was no need to delay it because of her normal menstrual period.
"Then drink more hot water, sister." Yan Mingcheng looked at his sister who sneaked to the slope to dig ant holes during the break, and said softly.
"Okay, Chengcheng is such a considerate boy." Seeing his concerned look, Mo Yutong couldn't help but rub his head.
"Sister!" Yan Mingcheng lowered his head embarrassedly and continued to practice calligraphy. He wanted to write as well as his elder brother.
On the small road, women pushing wheelbarrows walked towards the fields, chatting and laughing, and stacked bundles of straw on the carts.
After hesitating for most of the day, Tian Xiaomei finally mustered up the courage to stuff the cold egg in her pocket into Ma Xinguo's pocket, but unfortunately she failed as Ma Xinguo avoided her.
"Brother Xinguo, let me help you build up your body." She was exhausted last night, and her legs were shaking as she finally returned to the Li family. It seemed that her brother Xinguo was also very tired.
"No, you eat it yourself." Ma Xinguo looked at her in some confusion. He thought she had given up, so why did she come back after being quiet for a few days?
"Brother Xinguo, I know you still care about me." What she heard from the aunts at Lao Li's house was true. It turned out that a man would treat her well only after they had a substantial relationship.
"I have to work." How did this make sense? Ma Xinguo had no idea what her sudden shyness was all about, so he lowered his head and continued to cut the rice.
"Brother Xinguo, please be gentler next time." Tian Xiaomei, with a flushed face, said this, picked up the straw and ran away quickly.
"What's going on between you and her?" Liao Qingyun straightened his almost broken waist and asked weakly.
"I want to ask her too." Ma Xinguo was confused and really couldn't understand.
"No need to ask, I'll entrust this land to you while I take a break." Liao Qingyun sat on the ridge of the field and felt like he was about to collapse.
If Ma Xinguo hadn't helped him these days, he would probably have been lying in bed unable to get up. Cutting rice is really tiring!
After harvesting the last piece of rice field, the rice needs to be dried to dry. Drying the rice is also a strenuous job. You need to use a rake to rake out the clean rice and turn it over constantly.
After finishing the work with great enthusiasm, Yan Mingli and Yang Feng went to check and register the little girl with the work points book.
In the past, not to mention inspections, even the work points booklet was not something someone of his background could touch, but now...
He turned his head to look in the direction of the little girl, with an indelible tenderness between his brows.
After finishing work and packing up to go home, Mo Yutong didn't want to move at all. She sat in the rattan chair in the room, drowsy.
"Yutong, I'll take you to the health center." Seeing that she was uncomfortable, Yan Mingli felt uncomfortable too, and his eyes were full of self-blame. It was all because of him that the little girl was unwell.
"Brother Li, it has nothing to do with you. I'm having my period." Mo Yutong hugged his arm and said with a blushing face.
"What is that?" Yan Mingli looked at her in confusion until the little girl whispered two words in his ear. Then he squatted stiffly beside the rattan chair with his face flushed, neither wanting to leave nor to stay.
"Um, does it hurt?" Seeing the little girl's brows slightly frowned, he suppressed the embarrassment surging in his body and asked with concern.
"It hurts a little. Brother Li, can you make me a cup of brown sugar ginger tea?" She rubbed his arm and whispered weakly.
"Okay! What else does Yutong want to eat? I'll make it."
"I want to drink porridge."
"Okay! Let's have vegetable porridge tonight." The little girl was not feeling well, and he had to do his best to satisfy her.
"Brother Li, you are so nice!" Mo Yutong curled up in the rattan chair and smiled gently.
"Be good! I'll be back soon!"
Yan Mingli got up, went into the bedroom to get some brown sugar, cut a piece of ginger from the cupboard, lit a fire and started to make brown sugar ginger tea.
Soon the ginger tea was ready. He put it in an enamel pot and let it cool on the stove, then quickly washed the rice and cooked porridge.
When the ginger tea cooled to lukewarm, Yan Mingli asked his younger brother and sister to keep an eye on the kitchen while he went into the large room next door.
Squatting beside the rattan chair, he gently stroked her forehead with heartache and fed her carefully, mouthful by mouthful.
"Yutong, are you still feeling bad?" His mother left when he was thirteen and never taught him these things. He didn't know how to deal with it and could only try blindly by feeling his way forward.
"Much better, don't worry, Brother Li!" Her boy was obviously very nervous, but he didn't dare to show it on his face. He could only test it nervously and carefully.
"Yutong, seeing you in pain makes me sad." The boy said sweet words seriously, which made her heart soften. She raised her head and kissed his lips.
Holding her little head in his hands, he leaned over and let her pry open her lips and teeth, entangled with him.
"Brother..." Yan Mingxue rushed into the room in a panic, looked at the two people who were quickly separating, and asked curiously: "Sister, did you eat anything delicious?"
"A sweet candy." She glanced at the boy and smiled softly while leaning on the armrest.
"Aren't you watching the porridge in the pot in the kitchen?" Yan Mingli looked at the little girl helplessly, stood up and asked Yan Mingxue.
"Brother, grandma is here, as well as my uncle, aunt, and second cousin. They are in the yard." Yan Mingxue seemed to have just remembered the purpose of her coming in and said quickly.
