Han Yixian listened to Du Yuhan's words and said with a slight smile, "You always manage to say some strange things. Yuhan, give me a chance to test you. What do you think of my actions?"
Du Yuhan was in a state of confusion, and her attitude was not as firm as before. She needed to think things over carefully, so she said, "I can't give you an answer right now. I need to think about it carefully. Besides, even if you get past me, you might not be able to get past my biological parents."
Although Du Yuhan knew that her parents would not interfere with her, she still wanted to give Han Yixian a difficult task.
Han Yixian said, "As long as you give me a chance, I will use the utmost sincerity to obtain your parents' consent."
As they were talking, Han Yixian's stomach started growling. He hadn't eaten since last night, nor this morning, and now it was noon; of course, his stomach was rumbling with hunger.
Du Yuhan, of course, heard the sound and asked, "How long has it been since you ate?"
Han Yixian rubbed his rumbling stomach and said, "I was so excited to get your confirmation yesterday that I didn't eat, and I was in such a rush to get here this morning that I didn't eat either. Yuhan, do you have anything to eat here? My stomach hurts from hunger. Just give me two cornbread buns and a bowl of water."
When Du Yuhan heard that Han Yixian hadn't eaten all day, she knew he deserved to be hungry, but she still couldn't help feeling sorry for him.
She snorted and said, "Hmph, all you do is play the victim. Wait here, I'm going to cook."
With that, Du Yuhan left the house and went to the kitchen.
Han Yixian sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and chuckled. He knew Du Yuhan would feel sorry for him. His girl could never bear to see him suffer. How could he bear to give up on someone like Du Yuhan?
No matter what trials he faces, he has only one goal: to win back Du Yuhan. He will not give up until he achieves it.
Han Yixian stood up and came to the kitchen. When he saw Du Yuhan carrying firewood in, he took the initiative to sit by the stove and prepare to start a fire.
Du Yuhan said, "Let's have noodles with soybean paste today. It'll be quicker."
Han Yixian asked, "Do you have any wheat flour at home? It doesn't have to be so complicated. I'm fine with whatever I eat. Just heat up a couple of leftover cornbreads for me."
Du Yuhan rolled her eyes at Han Yixian and said, "Have you been eating properly lately? Look how much weight you've lost. How can you not take care of your health? I went through so much trouble to get you back in shape."
As Han Yixian lit the fire, he said, "Back then, I thought you were gone. I was utterly desperate and heartbroken. I didn't care about my health at all. But don't worry, I will definitely listen to you and eat well from now on. I want to live a long and healthy life with you."
Du Yuhan snorted and ignored Han Yixian's words. She first prepared the dough for the noodles, then quickly chopped some wild boar meat that she had secretly taken from her spatial storage. She first fried a meat sauce, then made scallion oil, and scrambled an egg. Then she cleaned the pot and boiled water.
While Han Yi was boiling water, she quickly rolled out the noodles.
Du Yuhan went to the yard and pulled up a few radishes that had grown a bit. The radishes were still small, but the radish greens were perfectly edible. She washed the small radishes and greens together, chopped them up, and used them as a vegetable topping.
The garlic sprouts were also ready to eat, so I picked a few and chopped them up to use as a side dish.
A pot of noodles was cooked very quickly.
The hand-pulled noodles made from pure white flour are very chewy, and they taste great with meat sauce, scallion oil, and fresh vegetable toppings.
Han Yixian sat down at the table and, without any ceremony, took the large bowl of noodles and various toppings that Du Yuhan served him and began to eat heartily.
He was truly starving, and eating Du Yuhan's cooking again felt like the most delicious food in the world. No one could compare to Du Yuhan's culinary skills and how well they suited his taste.
Du Yuhan was full after eating only one bowl of noodles, and then she watched Han Yixian across from her eating with relish.
Du Yuhan felt a pang of sadness when she saw the white hair at Han Yixian's temples. She thought that Han Yixian must have been very sad about her death, which was why his hair had turned white.
Han Yixian looked much more haggard, and his demeanor had changed drastically. He had become much colder and more melancholic. Was it because of her?
After Du Yuhan finished eating, Han Yixian swept up all the remaining food on the table.
After finally enjoying a satisfying meal, Han Yixian breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I'm so glad to be eating your cooking again. I wouldn't trade your food for anything, not even a god."
Du Yuhan rolled her eyes at Han Yixian and said, "You came here just for the food I made?"
Han Yixian looked intently at Du Yuhan and said, "You know perfectly well that I am not."
Du Yuhan stood up to clear the table and said, "Now that you've finished eating, you should leave. If people see you in my house, they'll start gossiping."
Han Yixian really didn't want to leave; he wanted to see Du Yuhan more and talk to her. But he was afraid of upsetting her.
So he said, "I asked Liu Gang to pick me up this evening. It's only two o'clock now. Can you let me leave a little later? If you don't want to, I'll go wait for him by the roadside right now."
He stood up as he spoke.
Du Yuhan is much calmer now and can face Han Yixian with equanimity.
Although Han Yixian's past actions had hurt her, she never harbored much resentment towards him from the beginning.
Even out of consideration for the kindness Han Yixian had shown her in her past life, she wouldn't resent him. Now that she knew the whole story and Han Yixian's subsequent actions, she felt much more at ease.
Even if they couldn't be husband and wife in the future, they could still be friends. But thinking about what Han Yixian had said, what if he really remained a bachelor for life if she didn't marry him? She knew that Han Yixian meant what he said.
Du Yuhan sighed and said, "Then you can rest here for a while before waiting for Liu Gang. Go to the east room and rest for a bit."
