Chapter 47 First Real Combat

Du Yuhan's chicks grew very fast. Every day, she would chop up fresh, tender wild vegetables, mix them with some bran and water, and then feed them to the chicks.

Du Yuhan added water from the space well, and the chicks grew faster than ordinary chicks. She thought it was thanks to the well water.

She was afraid the well water was too potent, so she only added a tiny bit, not daring to take too much risk. This was also an experiment she conducted to test the efficacy of the well water.

Du Yuhan's current life space is very different from her previous life. For example, the mountains that appeared when the space was upgraded to level ten were not present in her previous life, and the well that appeared later was also not present in her previous life.

She wondered if her space had changed because of her rebirth, and she had to slowly discover the difference in her space.

Now, with the help of the mountains and well water, she's earning money much faster, and she's sure she'll have enough money by the time the medicine to treat Han Yixian's leg becomes available. Her stress has lessened considerably.

On the weekend, Yuan Qiwen arrived at the courtyard early in the morning. After greeting his older cousin, he went to the yard to practice archery, hoping to improve his skills as soon as possible so that he could shoot prey.

Han Yixian saw three young men and women practicing archery in the courtyard outside and, feeling an itch to try it himself, wheeled his wheelchair into the courtyard.

After watching his cousin shoot arrows for a while, he said, "Qiwen, give me the bow and arrows, I'll shoot two arrows."

Yuan Qiwen immediately handed the bow and arrows to his cousin, looking at him curiously. Could it be that his cousin had also become interested in archery?

Han Yixian skillfully nocked the arrow and drew the bow; the arrow shot out in a flash and hit the bullseye perfectly.

Yuan Qiwen and Liu Gang stared wide-eyed in astonishment.

Du Yuhan wasn't surprised at all, because Han Yixian had taught her archery from the very beginning.

Yuan Qiwen exclaimed, "Wow! I never knew you had this skill, cousin! You're a true archer!"

Liu Gang also said, "Yes, Commander, I didn't expect you to be able to shoot arrows. You're so accurate with a gun, and your archery is just as good."

Han Yixian laughed and said, "This is nothing. It's only a short distance. Qiwen, your bow-holding technique isn't quite right. Let me teach you."

Han Yixian explained the essentials of archery to the two boys again before letting them practice.

After practicing for a while, seeing that the sun was quite high and the moisture in the mountains should have dissipated, the three of them, as agreed, each carried a willow basket and Han Yixian went into the mountains.

Their trip into the mountains was to hunt and gather wild vegetables. This was also Liu Gang and Yuan Qiwen's first real-world experience.

The mountains are now lush and green, the grass has grown taller, and small animals are becoming more active.

Yuan Qiwen, holding a bow that Du Yuhan had made for him, followed Du Yuhan carefully through the mountains and forests, searching back and forth for any prey nearby.

He was eager to test the results of his practice over the past few months; even hitting a small prey would make his training worthwhile.

After hiking in the mountains for a while, the group finally spotted a pheasant with its head down, searching for food among the trees.

When Yuan Qiwen saw that he had finally found his prey, he put his index finger to his lips and made a shushing gesture, indicating that he would be the one to hunt the pheasant.

Liu Gang and Du Yuhan both nodded, wanting to see the results of Yuan Qiwen's practice over this period of time.

Then Yuan Qiwen slowly took out his bow and arrow, nocked the arrow, drew the bow, and aimed at the pheasant.

With a whoosh, the arrow shot out and actually hit the pheasant.

The pheasant didn't die on the spot; it dragged the arrow for a while before the arrow got stuck in a tree branch, preventing it from escaping, and it collapsed to the ground.

Yuan Qiwen and Liu Gang gave chase after the pheasant after shooting it with an arrow. Liu Gang ran the fastest and picked up the nearly dead pheasant first, then burst into laughter.

Du Yuhan ran in and laughed. It turned out that the arrow Yuan Qiwen had shot had gone right through the pheasant's rear end, making it look as if the pheasant had an arrow growing out of its rear.

Liu Gang laughed and said, "Xiao Wen, you're incredibly accurate! You hit the chicken's butt right there." Then he laughed again.

Yuan Qiwen rolled his eyes at Liu Gang, snatched the pheasant, looked at it, and said, "No matter where it hit, it hit, and it's a pretty big pheasant."

You laugh at me for shooting in the wrong spot? Show me how you shoot a game. Don't be a pushover when it comes to real combat, always trying to laugh at others.

Upon hearing this, Liu Gang retorted, "You know I can't catch any prey? We have a deal: I'll hunt the next one, and no one is allowed to compete with me."

Du Yuhan laughed and said, "Alright, it's good that you caught the prey. Liu Gang will take the next one. Let's keep quiet, or we'll scare away all the prey."

The group quickly shut up, put the pheasant in the willow basket, and continued on their way to find their next target.

After walking for a while, they spotted another pheasant. This time, it was agreed that Liu Gang would make the move, and the other two didn't move, just watching Liu Gang draw his bow and shoot the arrow.

However, it was clear that Liu Gang's skills were not yet up to par; the arrow grazed the pheasant's feathers and missed.

Upon seeing this, Du Yuhan quickly nocked an arrow, drew her bow, and shot the pheasant that had already taken flight. The pheasant flapped its wings a few times after being hit and then lay still.

Seeing this, Yuan Qiwen patted Liu Gang on the shoulder and laughed, "No matter where I hit, I hit the target. You didn't even hit a hair. Comrade, you still need to work harder. Hahaha."

After saying that, he burst into laughter and went to pick up the pheasant.

Liu Gang said defiantly, "My hand was shaking a bit this time, but I'll definitely hit the target next time."

However, Liu Gang was clearly not skilled enough and was also unlucky, failing to hit the target once. It was Du Yuhan who had to hit him with arrows to prevent the prey from escaping.

Along the way, Yuan Qiwen made a lot of jokes about Liu Gang.

However, Yuan Qiwen only managed to hit the target on his first try; he never hit it again after that.

They ventured deeper into the mountains this time, and their haul was quite good; they caught three pheasants and two rabbits. After that, they didn't hunt anymore.

The weather is warm now, and if they hunt too much game, it will spoil. Luckily, they found a litter of rabbits, six in total, which made Du Yuhan extremely happy.

With these six little rabbits, she can start raising rabbits. She'll build a rabbit hutch when she gets back.

The group returned to the mountainside with their prey and began digging for wild vegetables. The vegetables had grown quite large and soon filled their baskets. The bottom of the basket held the prey, and the top held the vegetables. The three men happily returned home.

Yuan Qiwen felt that this trip into the mountains was the most enjoyable one yet. He had gone hunting in the mountains before, but without a gun, he had often returned empty-handed.

He can shoot arrows now, although he's not very accurate yet. This time, he missed a lot of prey and only managed to hit a pheasant. But if he keeps practicing, he'll definitely hit the target every time in the future.

Thinking of this, it was as if a large herd of prey was walking towards him, and all kinds of delicious food were beckoning to him.
