He Yuhan and Han Yixian had already made preparations to leave for the south after the Lunar New Year. Because they needed to go with Jiang Bowen to deal with the Jiang family's affairs first, they planned to set off on the second day of the Lunar New Year. Han Yixian had also bought train tickets in advance.
Because it was the second day of the Lunar New Year, there were relatively few people traveling, so Han Yixian easily bought four sleeper tickets.
He Yuhan started preparing food for the train journey as early as the first year of junior high school. She made some meat sauce and put it in canning jars for easy carrying, and also prepared some sausages and dried meat in advance.
Early on the second day of the Lunar New Year, He Yuhan made some egg pancakes, boiled some eggs, and prepared some pickled vegetables to take with her. He Yuhan did these things just to put on a show; she had all kinds of food in her space, but she needed a cover.
The train was scheduled for a little after 10 a.m., and Han Yixian and Jiang Bowen agreed to meet at the train station entrance.
Liu Zhongyi had already packed his luggage. He was probably going to stay there for a long time, so he brought a lot of luggage, mostly his usual things.
He Yuhan and Han Yixian brought some clothes, which were available in the other spaces.
He Yuhan was a little worried about the child, so she left some commonly used medicines, explained their usage to her mother and mother-in-law, and then went out with Han Yixian. He Zhenhua saw Han Yixian and the others off at the train station.
After meeting Jiang Bowen, the four of them entered the train station and quickly boarded the train after having their tickets checked.
This trip is essentially from the north to the south, which takes a week by train. They also need to visit Jiang Bowen's hometown in between, so the journey will take about ten days. Han Yixian can't take too much leave, so time is very tight.
The four of them quickly found their carriages and berths. It was the first day of the Lunar New Year, so the train was relatively quiet, especially the sleeper carriages. Their compartment had six berths, but only the four of them, which was quite convenient; it was easy to grab a bite to eat.
After putting away all the luggage, Han Yixian went to fetch some hot water and placed a few cups on the small table by the window, saying, "Everyone, drink some hot water to warm up. Yuhan, you take off your shoes and sit on the lower bunk, cover yourself with the blanket and warm your feet. Uncle, you warm your feet too."
As he spoke, he took off He Yuhan's shoes and tucked her feet into the blanket. He then took down the blanket from his upper bunk for He Yuhan to lean against, and placed a water cup in her hand to warm her hands.
He Yuhan's feet did feel like they were about to freeze, so she accepted her husband's kindness.
He Yuhan said, "Uncle, listen to Brother Yi and take off your shoes and cover your feet with a blanket to warm them up. It's so cold today, I feel like my feet are going to freeze. Bowen, how are you?"
Jiang Bowen, holding a thermos of hot water, said, "I'm fine. I'm a grown man with plenty of energy."
He Yuhan suddenly remembered the hot water bottles she had prepared. Under the cover of her bag, she took out four hot water bottles and said, "Brother Yi, I brought a few hot water bottles because I'm afraid of the cold. Go fill them with hot water and we can each hold one. It's quite cold on the train."
He Yuhan hadn't taken the train many times since returning to this era, let alone in winter, as trains nowadays weren't as warm as they were in later years.
Han Yixian's eyes lit up when he saw the hot water bottles his wife took out. With these hot water bottles, his wife would be much warmer. He quickly took a few hot water bottles and started filling them with hot water.
Jiang Bowen, worried that Han Yi might not be able to carry it, said, "Brother Han, I'll go with you."
Han Yixian and Jiang Bowen returned with four hot water bottles. Han Yixian put one under He Yuhan's feet, one under her stomach, one under his uncle's feet, and had Jiang Bowen hold one. He himself was strong and didn't feel cold at all, even though he was wearing a military overcoat.
Several people felt much warmer after drinking some hot water bottles and some hot water. Just then, the train started moving.
Looking at the receding scenery, Liu Zhongyi sighed, "It's been many years since I've ridden a train. I never imagined that trains have become like this, and they're much faster now."
He Yuhan thought to herself, "This is already much faster? Then the trains before must have been incredibly slow. No wonder people used to climb onto trains; it must have been because the trains weren't going very fast."
The train hadn't been moving for long when it was lunchtime. He Yuhan took out her lunchbox, which contained freshly made egg pancakes. Because it was well insulated, they weren't too cold yet. It would be fine to eat them with hot water, and the eggs were fine too.
He Yuhan took out meat sauce and pickled vegetables and said, "Yi-ge, Bowen, go and get some hot water. Let's eat some egg pancakes and eggs with the hot water."
Han Yixian and Jiang Bowen each took two lunchboxes to fetch some boiled water and came back.
Everyone peeled their eggs and soaked them in hot water. They spread some meat sauce on the egg pancakes and added some pickled vegetables, which tasted delicious.
He Yuhan had told Jiang Bowen in advance that he didn't need to prepare any food and that he should eat with them. Jiang Bowen didn't refuse. He knew that Sister Yuhan wouldn't watch him eat pickled vegetables and cornbread while they ate the better food.
Han Yixian also rinsed the meat sauce with boiling water to make a fragrant soybean paste soup, which tasted very good. He then soaked the egg pancake in it, which also tasted great.
Jiang Bowen also tried to eat it this way and found it very delicious.
Everyone enjoyed the lunch very much, and felt warm all over. Jiang Bowen even had sweat on his forehead.
It was also cold on the train. After settling in, everyone sat for a while longer. He Yuhan said, "Bowen, why don't you go upstairs and lie down under the covers for a while? Sitting all the time is tiring. It'll be warmer with a hot water bottle under the covers."
Jiang Bowen nodded, took off his shoes, and climbed onto the upper bunk. Liu Zhongyi also took off his cotton-padded coat, covered himself with the quilt, and lay down.
He Yuhan handed a hot water bottle that she had just changed to hot water to Han Yixian and said, "Brother Yi, you should go up and lie down for a while too."
