The train sped along the tracks, and people got used to the clanging sound. The sleeper carriage, which was not crowded to begin with, was quiet in the afternoon.
When He Yuhan woke up in Han Yixian's arms, she felt warm all over. Luckily, she took off her cotton-padded coat and was only wearing a thin sweater. Otherwise, she would have been sweating profusely in Han Yixian's furnace-like arms.
Han Yixian lay on his side on the outside of the sleeper bed, with He Yuhan's soft body pressed against him. He felt that it was good that the sleeper bed was so narrow, otherwise his wife wouldn't be able to be so close to him.
Han Yixian had only dozed off for a short while, and he woke up as soon as He Yuhan moved.
He bent down, smoothed He Yuhan's slightly messy hair, and whispered, "Awake? Are you thirsty? Do you need to go to the bathroom?"
He Yuhan also whispered, "I'm a little thirsty, I'd like to drink some water."
Upon hearing this, Han Yixian sat up, turned around, and touched the cup of boiled water he had prepared earlier. It was still warm and just right for drinking. He then helped He Yuhan up and fed her some water.
He drank some more and said, "Should I sleep a little longer, or get up and move around a bit?"
He Yuhan said, "I'll get up and move around a bit in a bit."
Upon hearing this, Han Yixian took He Yuhan's cotton-padded coat and put it on her. It wasn't warm on the train, and he couldn't let his wife catch a cold.
He Yuhan woke up, put on her shoes, and got out of bed. She stretched her stiff limbs in the corridor and then went to the restroom.
He Yuhan looked out at the vast white expanse of land, almost entirely covered in snow, indicating a thick layer of snow. She wasn't sure if they had left Northeast China yet, but the scenery told her it was very cold outside.
After returning home, He Yuhan took out the milk powder and made a cup of milk for her uncle, Liu Zhongyi.
Liu Zhongyi woke up after a nap. It was normal to sleep on the train when there was nothing to do, but he didn't dare to sleep too much, otherwise he wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
He Yuhan handed the milk to her uncle and said, "Uncle, please drink this milk."
Liu Zhongyi could already smell the milky aroma and said, "I don't need to drink this, you drink it."
He Yuhan said, "This is to supplement your nutrition. If you don't behave, I'll tell my mother-in-law and let her take care of you."
Han Yixian laughed and said, "Uncle, you'd better just follow orders, or I'll complain when I get back. My mom told us to take good care of you."
Liu Zhongyi had no choice but to take the milk and laugh, "You brat, you're making a big deal out of nothing."
Han Yixian laughed and said, "It doesn't matter if it's a chicken feather or an imperial edict, as long as it works."
At this moment, Jiang Bowen, who was in the upper bunk, also woke up.
He Yuhan said, "Bowen, come down and get something to eat."
Jiang Bowen answered and jumped down nimbly.
He Yuhan took out a few bananas and some pre-washed apples from her luggage, handed a banana to Jiang Bowen and said, "Eat a banana first, then an apple. Eat some fruit so you don't get a sore throat from the long train ride."
Then she handed Han Yixian a banana and said, "Brother Yi, you have one too. Uncle, you can have some fruit later."
No one stood on ceremony; it was a rare treat to eat such good fruit in the dead of winter, so all the fruit He Yuhan brought out was eaten.
He Yuhan, worried that everyone would be bored, took out a chess set and said, "Uncle, why don't you play chess with Brother Yi?"
Liu Zhongyi's eyes lit up when he saw the chess set and he laughed, "This is great! Yuhan is so thoughtful. With this, the train journey won't be boring."
As they spoke, they set up their fighting stances on the lower bunk bed.
He Yuhan, worried that Jiang Bowen might be bored, took out a book on mechanical design and asked, "Bowen, can you tell? It's about mechanical design."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Bowen quickly took it, looked at it, and said happily, "Great! I can use this time to learn more."
He Yuhan laughed and said, "Ask me if you don't understand anything. We don't have much to do on the train, so we can use it to study."
Jiang Bowen nodded happily and began to read. Such an opportunity was too rare to pass by, and he wanted to ask as many questions as possible.
Next, Jiang Bowen would ask He Yuhan any questions he didn't understand, trying his best to master all the new knowledge.
He Yuhan then gave the group some beef jerky and cake, which could serve as snacks to fill their stomachs.
Because everyone ate quite a bit in the afternoon, they weren't very hungry, so they ate dinner a little late.
For dinner, He Yuhan asked Han Yixian to buy steamed buns, and then ate them with meat sauce, sausages, and pickled vegetables. Han Yixian and Jiang Bowen also made half a lunchbox of soybean paste soup with the meat sauce, and the aroma wafted far and wide.
After they had eaten and drunk their fill, Liu Zhongyi continued to play chess with Han Yixian. Because the lighting was rather dim, Jiang Bowen stopped reading and watched Han Yixian and his nephew play chess.
After washing up, He Yuhan climbed onto the top bunk. She thought it would be better for Han Yi to sleep on the bottom bunk first, so that he wouldn't have to squeeze in with her again.
Han Yixian watched He Yuhan nimbly climb onto the upper bunk without saying anything more. His wife was already up there; how could he let her come down? Besides, his wife wouldn't get up at night, so sleeping on the upper bunk was safer for her.
By the time lights were about to go out, Han Yixian and the others had finished getting ready, washed up, and gone to bed. The night passed quickly.
After several days of stop-and-go travel, the train arrived at Jiang Bowen's hometown, and the four of them got off the train together.
They found a guesthouse near the train station and checked in. Liu Zhongyi and Jiang Bowen shared a room, while He Yuhan and Han Yixian, a married couple, shared another.
After putting their luggage away, the group went out to a local state-run restaurant to have a good meal. Although He Yuhan had brought a lot of food, it couldn't compare to eating at home.
