After breakfast, the children were tidied up and sent to school. Xiao Xugan was taken care of by Wen Jinyu, while He Yuhan went to work at the brigade's medical clinic.
The clinic doesn't have patients every day. When there are no patients, He Yuhan processes and prepares herbs.
Some herbs need to be processed before use, which means that they need to be processed to make the medicine pure and dry, reduce toxicity, enhance the efficacy of the medicine, and change its medicinal properties, so as to facilitate dispensing and use.
Processing herbs often involves bleaching, washing, soaking, calcining, simmering, stir-frying, and roasting. Only after processing can harvested herbs be used more effectively.
So even if there are no patients, He Yuhan doesn't go up the mountain to collect herbs; she can't stay idle.
As the saying goes, one is never too old to learn. With the medical books her mother-in-law had, He Yuhan would take them out and study them in her spare time. Her medical skills became more and more refined.
He Yuhan was chopping herbs when she suddenly heard a commotion outside. She then saw Han Yixian carrying a person covered in blood on his back, followed by a group of people. Gu Qishen was among them.
Upon seeing this, He Yuhan quickly tidied up the examination bed in the medical room.
Han Yixian carried the person into the infirmary and, following He Yuhan's instructions, placed the person on the examination bed.
Upon seeing that the injured person was still a teenager, He Yuhan quickly asked, "What happened? How did this child get injured?"
Han Yixian said, "The children didn't have classes today. A few of them went into the mountains to find fruit and encountered a wild boar. Luckily, they weren't far away, and one of the children ran to me for help, which is how I saved the child."
The child's parents pleaded with He Yuhan, crying, "Dr. He, you must take a good look at him. Our family has only had one son for generations, and he's our precious only child. If anything happens to him, we won't be able to live anymore."
He Yuhan knew that the family's surname was Liu. They had given birth to many girls before finally having this son. The child's parents were also getting old and could no longer have children, so they were content with having a son to carry on the family line.
The whole family protected this child like the apple of their eye, but they never expected that the child would still have an accident and be on the verge of death.
This is absolutely devastating for the child's grandparents and parents.
Knowing the seriousness of the situation, He Yuhan quickly said, "Don't worry, I will definitely do my best to save the child."
Han Yixian said, "The child's abdominal wound was quite large, and his leg was broken. I only did some hemostasis treatment; I dared not do anything else."
He Yuhan said, "This is already very good. Everyone go out, I'm going to have the child checked."
She then turned to Han Yixian and said, "Brother Yi, this child has lost too much blood and may not be able to make it to the county hospital. We'll have to perform the surgery here. Go home and get my surgical instruments, and call Mom to come and help me."
Han Yi nodded and said, "I'll go right away."
After saying that, he quickly ran home. Time is life, and he was racing against the clock.
Han Yixian came over again with Wen Jinyu, carrying a box containing surgical instruments.
Many more people have arrived in the courtyard of the brigade headquarters outside the medical clinic; the child's grandparents have also come after hearing the news.
Gao Shuwen advised them not to cry, so as not to affect He Yuhan's surgery.
The child had lost too much blood, and the county hospital was too far away; the child wouldn't make it there. That's why He Yuhan was willing to risk having the surgery. Besides, even if they went to the county hospital, the results might not be as good as if she had performed the surgery herself.
With Wen Jinyu's help, He Yuhan's life became much easier.
Han Yixian also stayed inside to help, while Gu Qishen stood guard outside the door to prevent anyone from coming in.
Fortunately, the weather is nice today and the sunlight is shining into the room, so there's plenty of light and the surgery will be fine.
He Yuhan checked the child and found that his ribs were not broken and his internal organs were fine, except for a cut on his abdomen from excessive blood loss. The situation was much better now; all that was needed was to stitch up the wound.
As for the child's broken leg, that's even less of a problem. He Yuhan even healed Han Yixian's severe leg injury, let alone this child's leg which is only fractured.
He Yuhan quickly completed the preoperative preparations and then cleaned and sutured the child's wound. After the leg bone was set, a splint was put on, and the child would just need to recover.
He Yuhan was worried that the child wouldn't be able to handle it, so she gave the child anesthesia. The child didn't suffer much pain during the surgery.
With space available, He Yuhan had a full range of medical supplies, which gave her something to rely on.
Those outside, not hearing the child's cries, grew even more worried. The child's parents, grandparents, and others, fearing it would interfere with He Yuhan's surgery, dared not cry loudly, only covering their mouths and shedding tears.
The child suffered such severe injuries and lost so much blood; they don't know if he can be saved, and even if he is, will he be left with disabilities? The child's family is extremely worried.
After a long wait, Han Yixian finally opened the door to the infirmary.
The children's families rushed over and asked, "Comrade Han, how are the children? Did they survive?"
Han Yixian said, "Don't worry, the surgery was a success. Yuhan said that as long as she takes good care of herself when she gets back, she'll be lively and energetic again soon, and there won't be any aftereffects."
Upon hearing this, the child's parents and grandparents all knelt down before Han Yixian, saying, "Thank you, Dr. He, thank you, Comrade Han. Without you two, my child would not have survived. Thank you for saving his life."
Han Yixian quickly helped them up, saying, "We're all from the same village, no need for this. Get up. Yuhan will be giving you some instructions after she's done tidying up."
Everyone was overjoyed to hear that the child had been saved and would not suffer any permanent disability, and they greatly admired He Yuhan's medical skills.
The child's grandmother asked, "Comrade Han, why is my grandson so quiet?"
