Chapter Forty-Four: Hospitality

Yuan Qiwen was discussing hunting in the mountains with Liu Gang when he learned that Du Yuhan hunted with a bow and arrow and was quite surprised.

Hunting with a bow and arrow is really not easy, because bows and arrows are not something that ordinary people can control at will. Without a certain level of skill, you can't expect to hit your prey.

Actually, crossbows are much easier to operate than bows and arrows, but who would make a crossbow?

Although Du Yuhan knew a little about crossbows, she wasn't very familiar with them. Furthermore, crossbow bolts were slow and unsuitable for long-range shooting; a small crossbow bolt was also ineffective. She still preferred bows and arrows.

Yuan Qiwen examined Du Yuhan's hunting bow and arrows closely, thinking how impressive it was that she had managed to hunt so many prey with them.

Han Yixian invited his aunt and cousin to stay for lunch at his home. With Yuan Qiwen's enthusiastic response, Han Xiuqin jokingly and playfully stayed with her youngest son.

Han Xiuqin also saw a chicken coop built in the corner of the yard, which was used to raise chickens.

They're keeping a pheasant in the enclosure now. Turns out Du Yuhan caught it alive in the mountains to lay eggs and eat. That girl really knows how to manage her finances.

In a short time, Du Yuhan managed the courtyard very well. Girls are indeed more meticulous and better at managing life than boys.

It's also because I have good taste that I found such a perfect girl.

When Han Xiuqin arrived, she brought a basket of eggs, which were very precious.

Du Yuhan planned to use this opportunity to cook a few dishes for Han Xiuqin and her son at noon.

Seeing the eggs reminded Du Yuhan of the chicken coop she and Liu Gang had built in the corner, where now only one pheasant remained.

She plans to go to the market in a couple of days to buy some chicks to raise. Once they have chickens, they won't have to worry about eggs anymore.

Du Yuhan naturally wanted to treat Han Xiuqin and her son to a proper lunch.

She cleaned and stewed the two pheasants she had hunted the day before, and cut off the chicken breasts to make Kung Pao Chicken. Since she didn't have peanuts, she asked Liu Gang to shell some walnuts instead, which tasted quite good.

The pickled cabbage was ready to eat, so she also made a pickled cabbage and glass noodle dish, a stir-fried potato shreds with vinegar, a stir-fried egg with scallions, and a cold wild vegetable salad, which was also a very good dish. The staple food was rice.

While eating, Yuan Qiwen saw the food on the table and exclaimed, "So much delicious food! I want to eat more!"

Han Xiuqin laughed and scolded, "You've really satisfied your cravings today. Your stomach is always rumbling with hunger, like it can never be filled."

Han Yixian laughed and said, "Qiwen is at the age where he's growing and he's so active, he gets hungry easily. We'll have meat to eat as much as we want today. But you have to thank Yuhan; we can only have meat because of her."

Han Xiuqin was overjoyed with her good judgment. She picked up a large chicken leg and put it in Du Yuhan's bowl, saying with a smile, "Yuhan, eat more. You're still growing, so eat well so you can grow taller."

Du Yuhan smiled and said, "Thank you, Aunt Han. You don't need to worry about me. I can do it myself. Please try my cooking."

As he spoke, he used serving chopsticks to put a chicken leg in Han Xiuqin's bowl and another chicken leg in Han Yixian's bowl.

Han Xiuqin saw Du Yuhan's behavior and was pleased. It seemed that Du Yuhan was indeed good at taking care of people.

Moreover, the nephew did not refuse and ate the food that Du Yuhan put on his plate.

She knew that her nephew was a bit of a germaphobe and would generally not eat food that other people picked for him.

However, seeing that Du Yuhan was using serving chopsticks, I felt that the young girl was quite considerate, probably knowing that her nephew was a germaphobe.

Yuan Qiwen and Liu Gang ignored everyone else and were already so full they couldn't lift their heads.

Du Yuhan prepared six dishes and a cabbage soup, a combination of meat and vegetables, which, when served with white rice, was a very sumptuous meal in those days.

As Han Xiuqin ate her meal, she once again marveled at Du Yuhan's excellent cooking skills. Such simple dishes tasted so good in Du Yuhan's hands that she wished she could swallow her tongue.

Seeing that my nephew's appetite has increased significantly since he first arrived, I know that he really likes Du Yuhan's cooking.

Moreover, the most precious meat dish on the table was wild game that Du Yuhan had hunted in the mountains. Han Xiuqin felt that she had really made a good deal by asking Du Yuhan to take care of her nephew.

After the meal, Yuan Qiwen patted his stomach and burped, saying, "It's been so long since I've had such delicious food. It was so satisfying. I wish I could eat like this every day."

Upon hearing Yuan Qiwen's words, Liu Gang thought to himself, "We often get to eat this kind of food, but we can't tell this kid, otherwise he's afraid Yuan Qiwen will come here to freeload every day."

Han Xiuqin patted her youngest son with a smile and said, "You want to eat this kind of food every day? Dream on. Even if you have money, you can't eat meat every day. We can only eat wild game because of Yuhan. Otherwise, where would we get meat? You should be content with what you have to eat."

Knowing that his younger cousin was lively and active, Han Yixian said, "Qiwen, come here when you have free time on weekends. You can go hunting in the mountains with them. But you are not allowed to go out alone. There are wolves in the mountains, and that's no joke."

Han Yixian thought of the question he had wanted to ask his aunt about Du Yuhan's wages, and said, "Aunt, how much does Yuhan earn a month? I'll pay her wages for taking care of me."

Upon hearing this, Du Yuhan quickly waved her hand and said, "You don't need to pay me. I can't even get enough to eat at home. I'm already very grateful that I can eat my fill here. How could I take your wages?"

Han Xiuqin couldn't tell her nephew that Du Yuhan was the young wife he had found for him. If she was a nanny he had hired to take care of him, there was no reason not to pay her.

Han Xiuqin said, "Of course we should pay her. I had completely forgotten about it. How much do you think is appropriate? That way she'll have some pocket money."

Han Xiuqin also thought that if her nephew didn't marry Du Yuhan in the future, she would really have to pay Du Yuhan's wages. If Du Yuhan did marry her nephew, then it would be like giving her nephew's wife pocket money, so there was no loss.

Besides, the girl often goes hunting, which costs money, so it's perfectly reasonable to give her some pocket money.

Han Yixian said, "Yuhan is here to take care of me, so I will pay her wages. You don't need to worry about it, Aunt. I'll discuss it with Yuhan later."

Han Xiuqin stopped arguing with her nephew. He had his own pride, and she wouldn't let him feel like he had to rely on others to live.

The wages paid to Du Yuhan were not much for her nephew, and it would be better if her nephew paid them instead.

After lunch, Han Xiuqin was about to leave, but Yuan Qiwen refused to go no matter what. Han Yixian then asked his cousin to stay and play for the afternoon before returning home in the evening.

Before Han Xiuqin left, Du Yuhan packed a large basket of walnuts for her, telling her to have Yuan Qiwen pick them up after she finished eating them.

When Yuan Qiwen heard from Liu Gang that they had eaten elm seed rice a couple of days ago and that it was delicious, he urged Liu Gang to go to the elm tree outside the yard to pick elm seeds so they could make elm seed rice for dinner.

The two of them immediately agreed to go outside and pick elm seeds together. The elm seeds would be ready in the next couple of days; any later and they'd be too old to eat.
