Chapter Seventy-Seven: Settled in

Du Yuhan and He Zhendong followed that person into the warehouse.

The warehouse was piled with all sorts of things. Du Yuhan saw some fabrics scattered around and wondered if these were the defective fabrics that didn't need cloth coupons.

These fabrics are usually sold internally and never sold externally. Du Yuhan wondered if that was true, and if so, could she take the opportunity to buy some?

After that person gave He Zhendong several bags of cotton, He Zhendong gave the cotton coupons and money to that person.

Du Yuhan said from the side, "Master, are those piles of processed fabric over there?"

Du Yuhan didn't know who this person was either, and her second brother didn't introduce him either, so she could only call him master.

The man nodded and said, "Yes, those are defective fabrics. No cloth coupons are needed. They're three cents a foot. I can sell you some if you want."

Upon hearing this, Du Yuhan happily said, "Thank you, Master. I'll buy some to make quilts at home."

Du Yuhan ran up to the pile of fabrics and didn't stand on ceremony. The fabrics were in bolts and in pieces. She took more of the fabrics she needed. Anyway, it didn't cost any coupons, and she might not have such a good opportunity again. It wouldn't hurt to buy more and keep it.

He Zhendong is a doting brother and naturally wouldn't stop his younger sister's behavior; as long as she's happy, that's all that matters.

Du Yuhan mentally calculated how much fabric she needed, and after buying enough, she picked out some better quality fabric suitable for making clothes and bought some more. In the end, she spent quite a bit of money on these fabrics.

After shopping at the department store, Du Yuhan went to the grain station to buy grain. Unfortunately, grain was rationed and there was no grain left at the station, so she couldn't buy any. She could only wait until she got back to buy some from the brigade.

After shopping, Du Yuhan happily followed her second brother to the village to pick up Liang Shouzheng.

When they arrived at the agreed meeting point in the village, Liang Shouzhen was already waiting there.

After the three met, Du Yuhan learned that the Du family's household registration had been completed, and she breathed a sigh of relief. Thus, her adoptive parents' family was officially settled in Laohewan Village.

The three of them drove home without delay. Once they arrived home, Du Yuhan unloaded everything from the car and saw that the house had been tidied up perfectly.

The old quilts that we brought had already been laid on the kang (a heated brick bed) inside the house, so at least we wouldn't have to sit directly on the hard earthen kang, and we wouldn't feel cold while sleeping.

Luckily they brought all these old bedding sets with them, otherwise it would have been a real problem.

Du Yuhan said to Liang Shouzhen, "Uncle Liang, can we buy some grain from the brigade? I asked at the grain station and they said they were out of grain."

Liang Shouzhen said, "You should buy some from the brigade first. You don't need to buy too much, just enough for these few days."

The township is now encouraging villages to build large canteens so everyone can eat together. In a couple of days, no one will need to cook for themselves. Since you've just arrived in the village, you can owe us your meal money now; you can pay us back later when you earn work points.”

Upon hearing that a large canteen was also to be built in Laohewan Village, Du Yuhan secretly rejoiced that she had not bought a large pot.

"Thank you, Uncle Liang."

Du Lianqiao went with Liang Shouzhen to the brigade to buy grain, while Du Yuhan stayed home to pack up the things they had bought.

When Wang Yuqiao saw how many things her daughter had bought, she said, "Yuhan, why did you buy so much stuff? How much money did this cost? We can manage at home, but you can't waste your money. You need to save it for yourself."

Du Yuhan said, "Mom, don't worry, I know what I'm doing. This time I mainly want to buy some cotton and fabric. It's especially cold in the Northeast, so you need to prepare cotton-padded clothes for the whole family in advance. We also need to make a few thick quilts so that we won't be cold at night in winter."

As she spoke, Du Yuhan took out the discounted fabric she had bought and said, "This is discounted fabric from a department store. It's cheap and doesn't require coupons. I happened to come across it, so I bought a lot. I'll use this fabric to make clothes and quilts for the whole family."

Wang Yuqiao looked at the somewhat damaged fabric and said, "A few defects don't prevent it from being used. We're not fussy people, so it's good enough for us. This fabric is all good quality; you must have spent a lot of money buying so much. You can't spend any more money on the family; keep some for yourself."

Du Yuhan took out all the things she had bought, including pots and pans, kettles, towels, cups, and other daily necessities.

She instructed Wang Yuqiao not to show things like iron pots in public, and to use them discreetly so that no outsiders could see them.

Only after everything was tidied up did the house truly look presentable.

That evening, the Du family didn't go to the Liang family's house for dinner; only He Zhendong went. The Du family made their own porridge and cornbread using the cornmeal they had just bought.

When they finished eating, Du Lianqiao looked at the newly bought bowls and chopsticks and said, "Yuhan, you've spent all your money, haven't you? Dad will give you some after you finish eating. You can't go out without some money to carry around."

Wang Yuqiao said, "You went to the brigade to buy grain, but did you see what Yuhan bought? She bought several large bags of cotton, a lot of cloth, pots and pans, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and so on. She even bought a rare thermos. I asked the girl how much she spent, but she wouldn't tell me."

Upon hearing this, Du Lianqiao immediately said, "Then give all our money to Yuhan. Her money was given to her by others. We can't make things difficult for Yuhan."

Du Yuhan said, somewhat touched and somewhat helplessly, "Dad, Mom, I get paid every month now, and I don't have any expenses, so I don't need the money you give me. Besides, you'll need some money to make ends meet in the future."

The money I spent this time included what I'd saved up over the past few months, and what I borrowed from Brother Han. I'll pay him back when I get back and save up my wages. You've just moved in and have to buy everything from scratch, so this money was necessary.

Use the cotton and cloth as soon as possible to make cotton-padded clothes for everyone in the family, and also make several thick cotton quilts. The old cotton quilts that have hardened can be used as bedding on the kang (heated brick bed). It gets cold early in Northeast China, so we need to prepare for winter as soon as possible, lest we freeze.

Du Lianqiao sighed and said, "Your father is incompetent and has to rely on his daughter to turn his life around."

Du Yuhan said, "Dad, I am your daughter, a member of this family, and it is only right that I contribute to this family. If I stop staying in the Han family in the future, will you abandon me when I come back?"

Du Lianqiao quickly replied, "How could I not want you? You'll always be my daughter, a member of this family."

Du Yuhan then said with a smile, "That's settled then. Why are you being so polite with me?"

I picked out a few good pieces of fabric from the ones I bought and sent them to Uncle Liang's family. They helped us so much, and although my father's connections played a part, we should still be grateful.

Building a good relationship with Uncle Liang's family will benefit us. Mother should also try to get closer to Aunt Liang. That way, they can offer some guidance if anything comes up in the future.

Wang Yuqiao nodded and said, "You're right. It's still up to Mother to handle these interactions with women. I'll personally deliver the fabric to your Aunt Liang later. Men just aren't as meticulous as women. If we're polite enough, it'll make her feel comfortable."
