Chapter Thirteen: Plans

Han Xiuqin liked Du Yuhan's efficient work style very much.

She had three sons but no daughters, and she liked Du Yuhan from the bottom of her heart.

Han Xiuqin saw Du Yuhan's worn-out cotton-padded coat and got up to search the room. She found her youngest son's outgrown cotton-padded coat and some old military uniforms that had been made into outer garments.

Although these clothes were too small, Han Xiuqin couldn't bear to give them away or throw them away. She was afraid that if someone in the family needed them in the future, these clothes would be a lifesaver. They would fit Du Yuhan perfectly.

Han Xiuqin brought a few relatively new old clothes to Du Yuhan's room and said, "Yuhan, your aunt doesn't have any new clothes here. These are your brother's outgrown clothes, and they're still in good condition. If you don't mind, you can wear them for now. When I have time, I'll buy you some fabric and make you a few new outfits."

Du Yuhan took the stack of clothes and said, "Thank you, Auntie. These are much better than these tattered clothes that are covered in patches. I don't need to make any new ones."

These clothes fit me perfectly, and I want to look neat so that Brother Han won't find fault with me later.

Han Xiuqin smiled and said, "Then you should change quickly and dress neatly tomorrow so that you can leave a good impression on your brother Han."

After saying that, Han Xiuqin said sadly, "Sigh, your brother Han has gone from being a proud son praised by everyone to someone who can only sit in a wheelchair and has difficulty moving around. His temper has become a bit irritable and difficult to get along with. Please be more tolerant of his temper."

Du Yuhan nodded and said, "I understand, Brother Han must be feeling very upset. I won't hold it against him. It's a good thing if he can vent, it's better than keeping it all bottled up inside."

Han Xiuqin was very happy to see that Du Yuhan was so understanding, and once again felt that the girl she had asked someone to find for her was quite good.

The mother and daughter went back to their room to rest. They hadn't slept well at the guesthouse yesterday and were very tired.

The room was warm and cozy with heating, and Du Yuhan slept comfortably in the bed until the sun began to set before waking up.

She lay on the bed, somewhat dazed, looking at the unfamiliar room. It took her a while to realize that she had been reborn and had come to the Yuan family. She would see Han Yixian tomorrow.

She arrived in D province earlier in this life than in her previous life; she wonders how Brother Han is doing now.

She was overjoyed at the thought of seeing Han Yixian, who was still alive, and thanked God for giving her a second chance at life.

Du Yuhan put on her clothes, tidied her slightly yellow hair, and opened the door to go downstairs, when she heard voices coming from downstairs.

Then a woman said, "Sister, do you think Yixian would be interested in this country girl?"

As soon as Du Yuhan heard the woman call her "elder sister," she knew that this was Han Yixian's second aunt, Han Xiuying.

Han Xiuqin said, "Who do you think Yixian would like? My sister-in-law has introduced him to so many beautiful girls from good families, but he didn't like any of them. In the end, he only reluctantly accepted Liu Ying. Now that you've found him a girl from the countryside, he'll be even less interested."

"Sigh, that's true. Who could accept suddenly going from a privileged young man to a disabled person with limited mobility? All we can do is tell him we've found him a caregiver, and we'll discuss marriage later when they've developed feelings for each other."

Han Xiuying said, "Alas, Yixian is just too ambitious. He joined the army when he was a teenager and fought in countless battles, big and small. He reached the regimental level at a young age. Which of the young men in the capital was not convinced? Which family did not envy our Han family for having such an outstanding child? But who could have imagined that something like this would happen? It's true that too much intelligence can be a curse."

Han Xiuqin said, "My sister-in-law is extremely snobbish. Now that Yixian is disabled and can no longer bring her glory, she no longer treats him well and doesn't care about him anymore. What a heartless mother she is. Liu Ying has also broken off the engagement."

My older brother found me, and I also felt that Yixian was no longer suitable to stay in Kyoto, so I brought him to my place.

Few people here know him, and they won't bother him because of his fame, nor will they constantly reopen old wounds. With your brother-in-law and I looking after him, he'll slowly recover.

Han Xiuying nodded and said, "I also think it's better for Yixian to come here. It would be even better if he could have someone he could take care of."

Han Xiuqin said, "That's why I found someone to take care of Yixian. I also asked a colleague to help me find Du Yuhan. My colleague's cousin made many inquiries before confirming that she was the girl."

I heard that this girl is very capable and sensible at home, and she raised her three younger brothers. However, her grandmother and the other family members treat her very badly, and she suffers a lot of mistreatment at home.

The girl was only fifteen years old when her grandmother wanted to marry her off to a bachelor in his forties from a neighboring village in exchange for dowry money to help her uncle get a wife. Later, they found out that the girl was not their biological daughter.

It turns out this child is the descendant of a couple of revolutionary soldiers. So I just gave them money and got her registered, severing all ties with the Du family. Even if my husband doesn't approve of this child, I'm still going to bring her out. This child is so pitiful.

I was hoping that this child would be grateful, and that when she grew up, she could develop feelings for Yixian and become his wife, so that Yixian could have a family and an heir. Although Yixian is disabled, he's still better than that old bachelor. Everyone says Yixian is good-looking.

Besides, once Yixian meets this girl and learns about her pitiful background, he'll surely take pity on her and keep her. If Yixian doesn't want to marry her in the future, we'll find her a good family to marry into.”

Han Xiuying exclaimed in admiration, "Hey, I have to say, you've even started using psychological tactics! I'm impressed."

Han Xiuqin also admired herself a little and said, "Of course, I also hope that our nephew can live a normal life in the future. He is still young, and sooner or later he will have to get married and have someone who cares about him."

Han Xiuying asked, "Would our sister-in-law be willing?"

Han Xiuqin snorted and said, "What can she do if she doesn't want to? I guess she doesn't care about Yixian's affairs anymore."

These days, which well-off girl in Kyoto would want to marry someone with mobility issues? And how many of the girls in the city know how to take care of someone?

Don't be fooled by how everyone used to fawn over Yi Xian; now they're keeping their distance as much as possible, afraid of getting involved.

That ungrateful Liu Ying used to chase after Yixian, but now that he's paralyzed, she's dumped him. It'll be hard for her to marry well now. Nobody in the military will want her anyway.

Han Xiuying said angrily, "Hmph, she'll never amount to anything. In the beginning, her family only had their daughter cling to Yixian because they were interested in our family background and Yixian's promising future, which they thought would help them. Now that they see Yixian can't help them anymore, they turn around and run away. They're all a bunch of ingrates."

...

The two sisters launched a scathing attack on Han Yixian's fiancée, believing that Liu Ying had caused Han Yixian the most harm.
