After asking her question, the woman raised a gleaming cleaver high and chopped down with force.
The knife fell swiftly and fiercely, and bits of meat flew everywhere. The whole pig was quickly separated from the bone and flesh.
Seeing this scene, Ning Jing couldn't help but swallow hard.
I took two bars of soap out of the basket and carefully placed them on the cutting board beside me.
Out of the corner of his eye, he couldn't help but glance around. In the corner, he saw two large basins of pig's blood, which looked like they had been salted and stirred, as they had already begun to coagulate into clumps.
There were also two piles of intestines and other internal organs such as pig hearts and lungs, which were thrown next to the basin containing pig blood.
"Jin Gui, see if you can take anything. This girl hasn't had any meat at home for months."
Ning Jing saw Niu Jinju step forward and speak to the woman who had taken off her work gloves.
"Everything here is pre-ordered. If you want meat, would you like it minced?"
She tossed aside her gloves and pointed to the pile of small, egg-sized pieces of meat on the edge of the cutting board, which looked to weigh less than half a pound.
You can see that they come from all sorts of parts.
Upon seeing this, Niu Jinju noticed that all the scraps of meat were lean, with no fat visible.
She glanced somewhat sheepishly at Ning Jing, then whispered, "Besides these scraps of meat, could you give me something better?"
Jin Gui glanced at Niu Jinju strangely, then thought for a moment and pulled a basket out from under the cutting board.
Inside were some pig bones and pig skin. If you were to scrape the pig skin with a knife at home, you could still scrape off a layer of oil.
She picked out a pork bone and a palm-sized piece of pork skin from the pile of scraps of meat and threw them among the other scraps.
That's all, no more.
Jin Gui frowned and said in a deep voice.
Her customers are mostly regulars; if she gives more to Ning Jing, she'll get less for others.
The whole family depends on her knife for a living!
Although soap was quite tempting to her, it was ultimately not as important as her belly.
"Master, could I have some pig offal?"
Ning Jing glanced in the direction of the pig's blood several times, and after hearing Jin Gui's words, she asked.
"Pig offal? Then these two bars of soap won't be enough to replace it."
Although industrial soap rolls are hard to come by, soap isn't a necessity.
If it weren't for the fact that she slaughtered pigs every day and reeked of pig stench, causing men and children to avoid her at all costs, she wouldn't have considered exchanging meat for soap.
When Ning Jing heard her say that, she knew there was hope.
She pulled Niu Jinju aside and said softly, "Sister, how about this? I'll give these four bars of soap to this man first, and when I get back, I'll bring you one more as a small token of my appreciation."
Niu Jinju was surprised that Ning Jing would suddenly speak up. She thought about how she had repeatedly reminded Ning Jing along the way, and how Ning Jing had readily agreed but hadn't taken it to heart at all.
His complexion immediately turned sour.
However, she wasn't stupid.
When Ning Jing offered to give him an extra bar of soap, his previously sullen face softened slightly.
"Ning Jing, I'm helping you out, so you can't just use it and then throw it away!"
Niu Jinju mentally weighed the gains and losses, gritted her teeth, and said.
"Big sister, you can rest assured. I can forget you, no matter who else I forget."
Look, I still have a few pounds of wheat at home.
However, you will need to take it to a huller and grind it yourself.
If you're interested, I'll bring it over for you along with the soap.
Ning Jing had actually already made up her mind before coming here, so she didn't mind if the meat was shredded.
If you exchange those two bars of soap for fabric, how many feet of cloth could you get?
