Chapter 1 Rebirth by the Fire Pit

"You won't marry me? You think you can just say you won't marry me and that's it? It's up to you! Let me tell you, Yunduo, you're a money-loser! In this family, you have no right to say no!"

"I raised you with all my hard work, not so you could just sit at home and eat for free! Otherwise, I'd rather have a dog or a cat than a nuisance like you!"

"If it weren't for the fact that you're still a human being, and that raising you might at least lead to a marriage or something, and contribute to the family, I would have just thrown you, you worthless thing, into the urinal and drowned you!"

“Now that both families have met, your brother and Yang Damei’s birth dates are compatible, and your birth dates are also compatible with Yang Erwa’s. The wedding date has even been set. And you’re telling me you won’t marry him? And you’re going to threaten to kill yourself to scare people? Bah! Let me tell you, Yunduo, we’re not letting you eat our food for free. Even if you’re going to die, you’d better die in the Yang family!”

"Tomorrow you either obediently go to Yangjia Village with the Yang family, or you can wait for me to break your legs, tie you up, and have you carried to Yangjia Village. There's no third way for you!"

On a sweltering summer afternoon, when the sun was at its most intense and even the most hardworking farmers were resting indoors, a rough, woman's voice rang out from the dilapidated courtyard of Yun Youliang's family at the east end of Lujia Village. Her tone sounded rather exasperated.

That was Zhao Cuifen, the wife Yun Youliang later married.

The cloud she mentioned was her daughter, whom she had after marrying Yun Youliang.

After marrying Yun Youliang, Zhao Cuifen gave birth to Yun Duo first, and then to a son, Yun Yusheng. She naturally treated Yusheng like a precious jewel, and she was also quite good to Yun Youliang's eldest son, Yun Shuisheng, from his previous marriage. She never gave anyone cause for criticism, and could be considered a good stepmother.

But as for his daughter Yunduo... he had been beating and scolding her since she was little, never giving her a kind look.

Before they can even walk steadily, they have to learn to do chores. If they don't do it well, they'll get a few slaps or go hungry for a meal or two at best. At worst, they'll get a severe beating that will take days to heal.

Not only did they force Xiaoyunduo to do chores that a little girl of only a few years old shouldn't be doing, but they also kicked her out of the house on rainy days to cut pig feed, without even giving her a straw hat!

It was one thing for her to secretly boil eggs and eat them at home with her youngest son, but one time Yunduo, who came home a little earlier than usual, accidentally caught them. She immediately turned the tables and accused Yunduo of stealing eggs. She even beat Yunduo severely, giving her a concussion. Several months later, little Yunduo would still secretly complain of headaches and dizziness.

Everyone behind her back says they've never seen a mother like Zhao Cuifen. She's more like an enemy than a relative!

Yun Duo is only eight years old. Because the eldest brother, Yun Shuisheng, is a little lame and can't find a wife in the nearby villages, they want to use Yun Duo as a bride in exchange.

You say this is your own daughter, but in the eyes of these rural families nowadays, she's definitely not as important as a son. A son is there to carry on the family line, while a daughter will eventually belong to someone else. But even if it's going to be an arranged marriage, shouldn't it at least be with a slightly better family?

That couple, Yun Youliang and Zhao Cuifen, are truly something else; they'd throw their daughter into any kind of hellhole they could find.

The Yang Erwa that Zhao Cuifen mentioned was actually a mentally challenged person who couldn't even take care of himself!

Because Yang Damei was considered one of the prettiest girls in the nearby villages, Yun Shuisheng, the eldest son of the Yun family, insisted on marrying her, even if it meant sacrificing his own sister.

His younger sister jumped into the river to commit suicide but was "rescued." Instead of reflecting on his actions, he caused a huge scene at home, which prompted Yun Youliang to smash a chipped bowl on Zhao Cuifen's forehead, leaving a two-finger-wide gash. This also caused Zhao Cuifen to jump up and down in the yard in the middle of the day, threatening and cursing.

Of course, if it weren't for the fact that Yun Duo was getting married tomorrow, she would definitely have started a full-blown fight.
