The plot of land that Yun Dazheng and his family were preparing to plant corn on these past two days was a small corner, a little over two-tenths of an acre. Even though it was just Yun Dazheng, an old man, he managed to turn the soil over in a day. Yun Duo and Yun Qishi were able to keep up by picking up grass roots and such.
The next day, we'll prepare the planting holes for corn.
As usual, Yun Dazheng did the heaviest work, digging the holes in front, while Yun Duo followed behind, throwing in the seeds. Yun Qishi threw in the mixed farmyard manure, and then Yun Dazheng turned around to fetch water to water the holes before covering them with soil.
These tasks didn't sound heavy, but for Yun Dazheng, an elderly man, they were still quite strenuous. Fortunately, there was a water pit that several families had dug together next to the land. Yun Fusheng had previously taken some time to carry more than ten buckets of water up and pour them into it, making it convenient for Yun Dazheng to fetch water. Otherwise, he would have had to carry water from the pond at the bottom of the slope to irrigate the land, and he probably wouldn't have been able to do it for half a day before his old back gave out.
Then there's Yun Qi Shi. Although the work she did wasn't heavy, and Yun Da Zheng even made her a long ladle with a wooden handle so she could scoop up farmyard manure and bend over less, she was still an old woman with bound feet. Let alone doing any work, even just standing for a while would make her feet hurt. So, for her, the farm work was also very hard.
Only Yunduo's job was the easiest. She just had to count the corn kernels and toss them forward, one nest at a time. But she did it somewhat absentmindedly.
Yun Dazheng looked at her and assumed that Yun Duo was a little child who had worked all day yesterday and most of the morning today and was tired, or perhaps she wanted to play. So, while he was resting after putting down the water bucket, he said to Yun Duo, "Duo'er, why don't you go to the shady spot under the tree and rest for a while? Or you can go play for a bit. You can put the basket by your feet, and Grandpa will cover the half-buried soil with it and throw it away later, it'll be the same."
Yun Duo quickly shook her head and said, "No, Grandpa, I'm not tired."
"Master, we're here!" Xiao Jiu's voice rang out at just the right moment.
Yunduo continued, "I just heard something thrashing around, and it seemed strange..." Then she looked at the two elderly people and asked, "Grandpa/Grandma, did you hear that?"
What's that flapping around?
Yun Dazheng and Yun Qishi exchanged a glance and shook their heads together. Just as they were about to say no, they heard a noise.
There really is one?!
Yun Da threw down the manure scoop in his hand and strode to where he had put his hoe. Just as he picked up the hoe, he saw two gray rabbits rushing towards them in a panic, one after the other.
Upon seeing this, Yun Dazheng was overjoyed. Without thinking, he threw the hoe out of his hand with a "hey!"
Perhaps it was just good luck, but Yun Dazheng's throw hit the rabbit in front of him perfectly, knocking it unconscious. As for the rabbit behind, it seemed to be extremely frightened, swerved sharply, and crashed into the hard, dry embankment. It stretched its legs a couple of times, bounced a few times, and then lay still.
It seems like he was knocked unconscious?
Yun Duo naturally knew that the rabbit hadn't been knocked unconscious by running into the embankment, but rather by being stung by a wasp hiding in its fur. To avoid arousing suspicion from the two elders, Yun Duo exaggeratedly exclaimed "Wow!" and ran towards the rabbit lying in the ditch below the embankment, excitedly shouting as she ran, "Rabbit! Two rabbits! Grandpa and Grandma, we can have rabbit meat!"
